While one of the most prestigious online tournaments in the world barely got started, another one thrived over the weekend.

The $5,000 GGPoker WSOP Main Event attracted a field of 4,984 entries, creating a  $23,674,000 prize pool that crushed the $20 million guarantee.

The eventual winner was Simon Eric Mattsson of Sweden. If that name does not sound familiar, his online moniker certainly will. 'C.Darwin2' is widely considered one of the best online poker players in the world and now he has a WSOP championship bracelet to his name.

Plus the small matter of a $2,793,574 bankroll boost, which he secured after defeating Kannapong Thanarattrakul heads-up.

If you want to see how one of the game's best bosses a major final table, the whole tournament was streamed with cards up coverage last night.

The WCOOP Main Event might still be the most prestigious tournament in online poker, but given the recent DDoS troubles that marred that event, the fact that bracelets are on offer in the GG series and now a marquee name taking down the online WSOP Main Event, could this upstart event become the biggest event of the poker year?
