WPT World Championship: Quads For Ivey On Day 3

The remaining 162 players entered Day 3 of the WPT Championship and only 62 of them managed to live through the day. Some of the notable names who hit the rail include Johnny Chan, Annie Duke, Vivek Rajkumar, Haralabos Voulgaris, Layne Flack and many more.

The play kicked off with Level 11 and Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier
seemed determined to grab the other stacks at his table but things
didn't go according to the plan.

In one of the early hands, he bet
5,700 from late position and the small blind called. The flop came , the SB checked, Grospellier bet 7,700 and the SB called. The turn brought and both players checked. The river card was ,
SB continued his checking ritual and Grospellier led out again, this
time for 17,700, and his opponent made the call. Grospellier turned
over but his opponent revealed for a rivered pair of aces.

Following encounter went better for Grospellier, as he knocked out Howard Lederer. Lederer went all-in with before the flop for his last 10,000 or so, but Grospellier's was enough to take him out with an ace high as the board came dry.

Level 11 concluded with another notable departure, namely Chau Giang. The flop came , Giang moved all-in for 100,000 and Will Failla called with after thinking for a while. Giang showed and he needed the board to pair or counterfeit Failla's straight in order to stay alive.

The turn came and with the on the river, Failla took down the pot and eliminated Chau Giang from the tournament.

Daniel Negreanu (pictured left) was looking at a short stack in front of him for most
of the time and Level 12 was no exception. He doubled up in a hand
against David Benyamine which put him at 70,000 in chips, while it left
David Benyamine with "only" 285,000.

However, that small boost didn't help Negreanu, as he hit the rail some
time later in the same level of play.

Negreanu's last hand of the
tournament saw Eugene Katchalov raise to 7,500 from under the gun,
Benyamine making the call and Negreanu moving all-in from late position
for 66,000. The big blind called and Katchalov and Benyamine both
folded.

Negreanu showed but found himself up against . The board came and Negreanu had pack his bags.

Phil Ivey (pictured right) and Boris Becker had their own encounter, luckily not in a
tennis match, one would think. Perhaps not that surprising anymore,
Becker came on top of this encounter, just like he did against other
top pros on Day 2.

The board read
and about 56,000 was already in the pot. Becker led out for 50,000 and
Phil Ivey went to the tank for a couple of minutes before making the
call.

Becker turned over
for a full house, aces full of sevens, and Ivey mucked his hand which
left him with 280,000 in chips, while Becker went up to 365,000.

As the play progressed, Ivey got down to 200,000 but climbed back up to over 400,000 after
taking many small pots and then he got himself involved in a big pot.
The board was showing on the turn, Sinan Yoyen bet 110,000, Ivey called and Grospellier called.

The river came and all three players checked. Ivey showed for a flopped quad fours and grabbed the pot which got him close to a million in chips.
