Wembley final for Global Poker League
The official schedule of the 2016 Global Poker League has been announced with London's Wembley Arena chosen to host the final.
In just under a week's time, the inaugural Global Poker League (GPL) kicks off and event organisers Mediarex Entertainment have just released the full schedule which includes the league's final stage to be held at Wembley Arena in November.
Divided into four different phases, things get underway from Tuesday April 5 at 9:00 PST offering over seven months of fast team event action before reaching the Wembley climax on November 23.
The different phases will be the Regular Season, Summer Series, Playoffs which all take place before the Finals in London.
Tournament format
There are twelve franchises taking part and all will be involved in first phase, the Regular Season, which will run from next Tuesday until September 22. The teams are split into two geo-categories, America and EurAsia, with the first of four six max events taking place online, with games being streamed on, among other places, Twitch.
From then until May 26, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday match days will feature three online games a day, after which the season will take a two month hiatus to allow the Summer Series stage to run parallel to this year's WSOP in Las Vegas.
Running from June 6 to July 8, the Summer Series, to be filmed live in the Mediarex studio in Vegas, will feature a number of heads-up battles involving all twelve teams. The Regular Season will pick up where it left off with three midweek match days from August 16 to September 22.
Once the opening two sections of the league's format have been played out, the bottom four franchises in the league will be eliminated with the top four sides progressing to the playoffs.
Although the venue for the playoffs is still to be announced, we do know that this stage will take place over two days and will likely be a North American location where teams will be whittled down to a final four.
Which leads us to the finale in London's Wembley arena. Again, taking place over two days, the 22nd and 23rd of November, the final four remaining sides will play for a winner in a soundproof cube, in what Mediarex have promised will be a great poker show.
