WSOP Event #2: Bonomo Takes The Lead After Day 2

Day 2 of the World Series of Poker
$40,000 anniversary event saw 89 players returning to their seats and
only 23 of them made it through the day. As the action kicked off on
Day 2 with Level 11 (blinds 2,500/5,000 with 500 antes), Hoyt Corkins
was one of the early casualties.

Corkins moved all-in on a flop of
and Greg Raymer called with pocket jacks. Hoyt held A-8 off suit and
was in bad shape but he did have a glimpse of hope in the form of an
open-ender. The last two cards came Q-K and offered no help to Hoyt who
was thus eliminated from the tournament.

Kenny Tran and Doyle Brunson also hit the rail early on, followed by Antonio Esfandiari who went up against Chris Moneymaker only to pack his bags after this encounter. Esfandiari held A-Q against Moneymaker's A-K and it was all over for "The Magician" after another king came on the flop.

Phil Ivey (pictured left) was doing well until he found himself in a hand against
Humberto Brenes and Sorel Mizzi. Brenes started the action with a raise
to $26,000, Ivey moved all-in and Mizzi called.

Humberto thought for a
while and folded what he later claimed was A-Q. That was bad news for
Ivey who held A-Q and found himself up against Mizzi's pocket tens. The
board came J-6-6-9-K and it was all over for Ivey.

Phil Ivey was one of the players who impressed the most Bruno Fitoussi, the
chip leader on Day 1. Even though Fitoussi fought through a tough field
to gather a respectable amount of chips, Day 2 was not as kind to the
young rising star. After losing most of his chips, his last hand featured
him moving all-in with K-Q against Brian Rast's A-J. The board came
9-high and Fitoussi was eliminated from the event.

Table 58 saw a fair share of big encounters between Chris Moneymaker, Ted Forrest, Phil "OMGClayAiken"
Galfond and a few other notable names. While most of the big stacks at
the table were busy pushing each other around, Forrest made a
disappearing act. After the dinner break, Forrest never returned and
blinded off for an entire level, which sent his stack down to about
750,000.

With 41 players still in the race and only 27 getting paid, Forrest
decided it wouldn't be a bad choice to return to the table. He showed
up just in time to bust Chris Moneymaker (pictured right).

The two moved all-in pre-flop
with Forrest holding pocket kings and Moneymaker being in bad shape
with pocket tens. A ten on the board gave some hope to Moneymaker but
then a king followed after, which sealed Moneymaker's fate and sent him
to the rail.

Day 2 came to an end with the bubble burst and only 23 players still in
the race. Some of the late casualties included Vanessa Rousso, J.C.
Tran and David Pham. Meanwhile, Justin Bonomo managed to take the chip lead with over 2.6 million in chips.
