Hellmuth wins LA Poker Classic side event
There is nothing more depressing claims Mike Matusow as old rival shows his class in the Omaha/Stud Hi-Low.
While the $1,100 Omaha Hi-Low/Stud Hi-Low side event at the L.A. Poker Classic isn’t normally a headliner, this year’s event is worthy of mention. This is because the heads-up finale of the 72 player event boiled down to two of the game’s primary names and one of its all-time classic rivalries.
Phil Hellmuth and Mike Matusow are the pair in question as the old “enemies” made it to the final two at the Commerce Casino in a battle for bragging rights that are, to the winner at least, worth more than the $40,000 prize money itself.
That winner was Poker Brat Hellmuth who pocketed $25,200 and a trophy to add to his substantial $21 million in live cashes and was quick to enjoy the moment at his great rival’s expense. Having topped the 72-player field, Helmuth jumped on Twitter to celebrate.

Matusow, who walked away with $14,400 to add to his live career total of $9,070,398 had the following to say; “What could be more depressing than a defeat in heads-up play against Phil Hellmuth? Nothing”.

The battle that delighted the gathered rail birds also provided Hellmuth with another sweet win away from Texas Hold’em, which had been a problem for him in the past, but now further demonstrates his non-Hold'em skills.
