Hi,

something came to my mind when playing some sessions:

It would be a good idea, to point out what a beginner can expect from the sessions.

The problem is: There are alot of threads, where people managed to get their 15$ in one or two days. This is really unrealistic and lucky, but most other beginners think they can do the same, and are disappointed when "only" winning with 10BB/100.

I myself, found out that 2BB/100 is a good value, and I didnt know that. I was expecting more, and now I am trying to convince myself not to expect that much from a session.

What are normal values for each limit? What can a beginner expect, and what can he expect from a session action (swinging during a session). I think this is important for self management, and I want to know that for myself too.

Especially on the early limits you often spend so little time (or hands, respectively), so your average BB/100 wont tell so much.
Plus, there are so many factors playing in ... and beginners should rather concentrate on their study of theory ;)

Of course, you can not expect to win a concrete amount every session. Those 2 bb/100 is a good result, but on the long run. In fact it is possible that you dont make those 2bb/100 in one single session. The first session you play with 6bb/100 on 600 Hands, the next 600 hand session u play with -4bb/100, etc.
But longterm you are an 2bb/100 winning player.

On micro-limits, like 2c/4c or 5c/10c it is possible to archive a much better result on longterm. I think something like 4 up to 8bb/100 is possible, if you are that skilled that early in your career.

I think you are right. 10BB/100 isn't realistic for a long time.
I am playing 1/2 - 2/4 fullring and 0.5/1 - 1/2 shorthanded.
Currently 0.5/1 sh with 3.13BB/100 and i think it is a normal value.

But you have to know, that you need a lot of hands (10k and more) to convincing a BB/100 value.

That's only my opinion

3.13BB/100 is already very good value and means that u own that limit and u have to play like 60k++ hands to make reliable results out of your stats

Yes, ok. Exactly what I expected.

Hmm... I guess theres no way to tell a beginner what to expect from his sessions.

Its hard for a beginner to play some hours and just have a breakeven session, or worse, lose BBs. I have to convince myself that this is an absolute normal behaviour, but thats hard to realise!

Thanks for your answers!

Playing micro limits your win rate should be above 2 BB / 100. Playing higher stakes 1 BB / 100 is already good and everything above 2 BB / 100 is very good.

Well, beginners are supposed to learn poker with all its pros and cons. You better don't tell a rookie about awesome, but in most cases not realistic, sessions and successes. It simply is frustrating. The earlier you realise that major fact, the sooner you improve you game.

But everyone will tell you the exact same thing: If you are willed on spending time on studies you will make a lot of money with poker ;)

I think the 8BB/100 value is possible for the micro-limits. But how can we know? Most people don't play their 60k hands on the micros to have a statistically proven value not to mention that hardly anybody uses PokerTracker on those limits.

8 BB/100 are possible if u already played at higher stakes and read enough theory but as beginning player it isn't possibl imo :)

We can ask Matthias and or Tobsen. They are very good holdem players and because of their coaching on the micros they should played some (>60k i hope 8[ ) hands there ;)

So true ... many beginners are focussing on so many things (their bankroll, pokertracker stats, ...) but not on analysing the hands they played and studying theory, improving their game that way.

I have NEVER had those 2BB/100 Hands. I either have -10BB/100 Hands over 2000 Hands or I have 5-10BB/100 Hands over the next 5000. And thats after maybe 150000 Hands alltogether.

And whats the mean over 150k hands?

Hi !

OK i started like this:

First i study the beginners section. Then i played two weeks at "Play Money" tables (started with 1k chips...at least got 90k).

After that i made the quiz, got my 5$ and playing now the limit 0.02/0.04$.

Here is my statistic from PokerStars:

1388 hands played and saw flop:
- 46 times out of 165 while in small blind (27%)
- 97 times out of 161 while in big blind (60%)
- 269 times out of 1062 in other positions (25%)
- a total of 412 times out of 1388 (29%)

Pots won at showdown - 75 out of 122 (61%)
Pots won without showdown - 67

At this time my account status is 12,72$. So i have nearly a rate of 13BB/100.

I think my percantage in "other positions" is too high and i still make mistakes but is this what a pro calls an upswing or is it possible to have that winning rate as a beginner ?

1388 hands dont mean anything. Could be upswing, could be pure luck, could be skill.

But your VPIP (hands played and saw flop) is too high. It should be around 15-20. Just read the preflop theory section again.

PS: you wont be able to keep on playing with 13 BB / 100 so dont think about your rate. Pay attention that you play every hand as perfect as possible and your rate will adjust by itself.

that is not even enough - my BB/100 came down from 2.5 to 1.5 within 6k hands and is now back to 2.0 within another 2k hands - and i played already 40k hands !
So wait until you have 100k hands, than it will be a little bit more realistic, i think ...

bye bye,

hy. i am new at this site

so can anyone explain me what is 10BB/100. ? or the other things like that. i don`t have any clue what this is !!!

thank you

BB/100 is not a short term thing. Over 50k hands you determine your BB/100, not once after 10k, and once after 40k more. It is very possible to maintain 8bb/100 over that many hands.

That means big bets in 100 hands. Here all hands count you witness actively sitting at the table, not only the hands you are involved in.

If you play 2/4 limit holdm, 4 Dollar is the big bet.
If yot play three full ring tables, you roughly play 200 hans per hour (3 times 70).
If your earn rate is 2BB /100 you earn 2X2X4 = 16 Dollars per hour by three-tabling.
