Hey TT, I have been reading your blog for a few weeks now, I have paused while reading this thread. I would just like to say thanks for passing all your knowlege and wisdom, I dont have any poker questions atm, but I would like to know what you think of these songs?

Did you read through the whole blog, all 280 pages? If so, I also have a question for you Which posts did you find the most helpful pokerwise? My question is basically how do I learn lots of pages of a subject, which I find boring and meaningless as hell in under one week for an exam? My concentration drops to zero as soon as I start reading it and I really can't find any significant value in obtaining the knowledge from the subject(i.e real life value=useless common knowledge in my eyes no matter how hard I am looking), yet I must gain it in order to pass my exam...

If you studied Maths with JB as course director you obviously wouldn't have this problem as everything he is teaching is i) hilarious ii) enlightening and iii) educational. However, since you are in the situation you are in, let me share my opinion.

I have to make one assumption though, without it my answer and your actions don't make sense: I have to assume you are studying what you are studying because you have a pretty good idea why you are doing it and you like the subject quite a bit overall. You have a game plan and finishing university helps you achieving your goals.

It happens to all of us that - even if we like the majority of courses of a given subject - we'll end up in a few courses we dislike and we don't see much meaning in learning too hard. Mostly we think i) the teacher is a fkn idiot and the curriculum is just bad / outdated .... . We rarely think along the lines of ii) the course is boring and in our mind useless, but we acknowledge the fact that we might not be wise/smart/educated enough in this particular field to really assess the importance of that topic. We might find out at a later point in time/our lives that this subject might not be as useless as we first thought.

Back to the main point: You have a gameplan and a reason why you are studying what you are studying. You have a vision of what you wanna do with all that acquired knowledge in a few years. Even if you don't see the point in learning those pages, just remind yourself of your vision and just go through it like a pro, sit down and study hard and fast. If you are not intrinsically motivated (mostly by having a longterm vision) it will be very tough to succeed and finish uni fast and well.

Keep your vision in mind! Just do it!

Now I have more of a poker question -I am wondering how to deal mentally and somewhat strategically with the people who put lots of pressure on us, the situations in which waiting for the strong hands leads to us being exploited, how to sense that we are getting outplayed versus such guys

If somebody puts a lot of pressure on you and has position => change seat/table There is not all that much you can do against a very strong reg oop.

Mentally, well it's all part of you general attitude. As always, dealing with those things is hard in the beginning, but it becomes fairly easy once you established a professional mindset.

Strategically, outplayed doesn't mean outplayed. There are various ways of dealing with strategies that are exploiting us, but - as always in this lovely game - there is no general answer to this. We have to analyze our opponent and try our best to find an appropriate counter strategy.

An MBA (Master of Business Administration) is a postgraduate study usually done while working in a management position.

I did a Master in Business Management as my undergraduate degree basically. Back then when I studied (lol I'm old) we didn't have the Bachelor and Master system like we have now but only "diploma studies". So an undergraduate degree took 4 years and finished with a master thesis, equivalent to a MA these days (finished as "Magister", but internationally we use the expression "Master")

I had a mix of economics, business management and entrepreneurship classes. MBAs usually focus on the management side of things, mostly for professionals who lack those skills (e.g. very often managers with a background in natural sciences before stepping up the corporate ladder to a senior management position).

I do check (simply because not checking only works by artificially finding a way not to see the numbers, we have to open cashiers once in a while) all my accounts in reasonable frequencies. Checking a stock portfolio weekly obv makes no sense [if you are not a swingtrader ofc] and we would normally not check a savings account too often either. On the other hand we need to check active company accounts daily to make sure business runs smoothly. Pokerwise I might not check often these days because I don't play that much, but the for every playing day I would say I check once when opening (to see if I got hacked ♦) and once when closing the software (to laugh and be happy when having printed virtual numbers and to laugh and be happy when being cold and losing virtual numbers because I know in the long run I win anyway ♦). It's a pretty automated process by now. I don't think there is anything wrong with checking. The crucial part is to not check emotionally. The balance doesn't matter once you have a higher bankroll than the limits you are playing, it only matters if you use aggr. BRM and are always on the verge of moving up/down.

It's actually pretty simple and the same is true for company bank accounts, private savings accounts, stocks portfolios, poker accounts ...: We need to make the best decisions we can make at any point in time and learn from our mistakes. We do check the numbers that are available to us (the balance) but only to know how much liquidity we got. Your question implies that checking the account has other side effects for you. I would still not recommend "never looking at the cashier" but rather do the normal thing and check twice a day but not be influenced by whatever you see (except BRM implications). The daily up and downs are just random noises. Long-term graphs with solid (!) sample sizes are the sound of truth.

tl;dr

Moral of the story: Focus on decisions, not on outcomes (resulting in numbers in the cashier). Do whatever feels natural to you.

I don't think anybody can be born that way, maybe different tendencies but its mostly the environment and your own thoughts that shape our attitude and makes us who we are.

Nah, I was a tiltbox before I found poker. Poker is good for you, best teacher I know of thus far (JB is 2nd ofc!). Reading mindset/psychology stuff probably helps. However, best thing is to just think about it as much as you can. Our brains can process quite some stuff. The longer you think about your problems, the more likely you are able to solve them. Just find out how and where you can think about those "gameplan" things the best, it's mostly not in front of a screen. I am not sure if talking to people helps, as it's so much more likely you end up talking to somebody you cannot learn from. 98% of people won't be able to understand you or help you. I think we are on our own in this spot.
