Less Lucky Here...

In contrast to the hand above, here is one situation where I was well ahead of the average pat hand - and I expect the majority of all possible pat hands to both bet out and at least call any raises, so I went for the check-raise. It didn't work out so well this time.

PokerStars, $1.76 + $0.24 - 5 Card Draw Pot Limit - 25/50 (5 ante) - 6 players
Hand delivered by CardsChat

UTG: 1,625 (33 bb)
MP: 1,870 (37 bb)
CO: 1,395 (28 bb)
BU: 930 (19 bb)
SB: 1,655 (33 bb)
BB (Hero): 1,525 (31 bb)

Deal: (105) Hero is BB with Q Q 8 5 5
UTG calls 50, MP raises to 100, 2 players fold, SB calls 75, Hero calls 50, UTG calls 50

Draw One: (430) Q Q 5 5 5 (4 players)
SB draws 1, BB (Hero) draws 8d, UTG draws 1, MP stands pat
SB checks, Hero checks, UTG checks, MP bets 200, SB folds, Hero raises to 550, UTG folds, MP raises to 1,765 (all-in), Hero calls 870 (all-in)

Total pot: 3,270

Showdown:
MP shows 7 K 7 7 K (a full house, Sevens full of Kings)
BB (Hero) shows Q Q 5 5 5 (a full house, Fives full of Queens)
MP wins 3,270

I hate it when that happens!
As I posted elsewhere recently, the odds of hitting a full house (or better) when holding trips is not as bad as it might seem — roughly 11:1 against in this case since opponent is drawing 1. When drawing 2, the odds are slightly better — roughly 9:1 against.

In this particular case, your success is actually far, far more unlikely than opponents — 97:1 against.

Nice moment to hit. Did think of 3betting but both blinds were really fishy. 100bb deep I would not mind 4bet either but almost 200bb deep would be bit of stretch.

Freerolling...

Exposed trips may look pretty safe, but the true beauty in hi-lo games lies in finding hands that can go both ways, possibly locking up one half of the pot while still drawing live for the other.

...which is also why I should have been more aggressive on 6th street already.

It isn't possible to hold a lo- hand if you have quads or a full house. So with trips showing it becomes impossible for opponent to hold a low once the K comes.
A superb situation!

200 BB PLO8 Scoop

rare, but oh so nice
The hand is from about 3 days ago, but I only import Party hands every so often...
This looks like the perfect river for opponent, but it's the perfect trap card for me — I already have the nut FH, and this gives me the nut low as well. Worse (for opponent) that 5 counterfeits their low.
