Really, what is the sodding point?
I logged into 770 today and found that the HUSNGs have been converted from $US fees to Euro [€]fees. At the basic levels where I [and most of us?] play, the rake structure has also changed.
Previously, the rake was a uniform 5%.
1] The rake for the basic entry level €0.92HUSNG is now €0.08.
2] The rake for the basic Turbo €0.93 HUSNG is now €0.07.
3] The rake for the basic Hyper € 0.94 HUSNG is now €0.06.
Mutatis mutandis, the same goes for the next level up, and doubtless applies further up the food chain. I have not looked at other I-poker sites, but would guess that the fees are uniform across the Playtech empire.
What this means in plain language is that there has been a 50-60% increase in the price for playing this format on I-poker. From what I understand, the rake was already lower on other platforms.
Now the site has to make a profit, or the site would not be there at all. The scale of the rise - on this format at least - indicates, however, that the rise is not there for profit maintenance, but that it is instead a shameless heist. This underlines my suspicions about the rationale of the currency switch from $US to €. Those of us with long memories will recall that when Great Britain switched to decimal currency from pounds, shillings and pence over 40 years back, the business community used the switch as a vehicle to thkrew the public with price rises. Same old, same old.
The poker community is a pyramid. The bottom levels of the pyramid do not make a profit. The question has always been: just how far off the bottom of the pyramid do you have to be in order to make a profit? I-poker has now made a decisive change to the answer to that question, so far as the HUSNG format goes.
An exercise that every player may find salutory is to look themselves up on Sharkscope, and check just how much total rake they have been paying over the course of their relationship with a particular site. When I checked this out, the answer was startling and indeed troubling, even before the currency switch - and I am essentially "only a recreational player", and funded by PS to boot.
How the folks using their own pennies, and even attempting to make serious profit from this insane game, might feel about what has happened to I-poker, is a matter best left to the imagination.
