He often missed the Q, and if he hit it, he'll likely 3-bet flop or raise the turn, giving you enough information to make the fold. (you have to pay 1.5 or 2 BB against a Q instead of 2.5BB)
If he folds, he'd likely had 6-outs against you, so that's also a good result.

btw I do not like bet river because I cannot imagine many weaker hands with which a reasonable villain could call. Check/fold is too weak after that passive turn so check/call must be right.
these blinddefense situation are often awesom. hit? then check/raise flop and bet turn and hope (better pray)
My experience is that when people (usually TAGs) check behind on the turn they will not fold the river on a board like this. It is unimproved A high very often, and they hope to induce a bluff. Therefore this valuebet is a must for me.
