A couple hands and a LOT of questions:

Known players:
[tg]Position_Stack:hands/vp$ip/RaisePreflop/AF/WTS/ORL/BBvsSteal/W$SD;BB$14.00:376/33 /7 /1.5/36 /10 /0 /58 ;CO$119.50:58/45 /17 /1.0/28 /0 /100 /57 ;[/tg]
3/6 Fixed-Limit Hold'em (5 handed)
Hand recorder used for this poker hand: PokerStrategy Elephant 0.67 by www.pokerstrategy.com.

Preflop: Hero is SB with K♠, 5♠
MP3 folds, CO calls, 2 folds, BB checks.

51% EQ w/ multiplier for opponent - raise???
50% EQ w/o multiplier for opponent - call??
50%*70%=35%

Flop: (2.33 SB) Q♠, 8♠, 5♣ (2 players)
BB checks, CO checks.

Turn: (1.17 BB) 4♥ (2 players)
BB checks, CO checks.

Final Pot: 1.17 BB

Results follow (highlight to see):

CO shows high card queen with nine kicker (7d 9s)

BB wins with high card king with queen kicker (Kh 9h)

Questions about “Using the Equilator” section: Equity for Completing in the SB.

1) Is the 70% multiplier useful regardless of blind structure? If not how does it change?
Ex - If 70% is for ½ blinds, what is it for 1/3? 2/5? Etc.

2) When figuring the average equity, why does the article not include the BB, who will inevitably be in the hand?

3) Why doesn’t the article take into account the preflop multiplier when calculating the limp range of the opponent?

4) Is the article the best way to figure out when to complete the SB, or are there ways to fine tune these concepts once one has them down?

Ex - with preflop multipliers according to position.

5) Is this a better way to figure out when to complete the SB, as opposed to using the Approx chart (4)? Should they be used in combination, or one or the other? If one or the other, which is better?

A lot of questions I know, but I appreciate every answer. Thanks.

hand 1 : call

hand 2 : fold

equity is not the only parameter to take into account. Playability is also to be considered.

Furthermore, to have a correct equity, you need to know correctly what range CO will limp with. This is not an obvious job.

I call in both cases.

K4o has quite good playability in limped pots. If you hit K on dry flop just c/r if you hit 4 just c/c to induce bluffs and wait for turn/river to make further decisions.

Most important thing when you want to complete SB is how bad is a limper/limpers (40/0 is very bad) and how aggressive is BB (30/10 is not). When BB is tag you can complete/fold K4o if he raises and when BB is lag you just fold K4o.

These high cards are so good in limped pot b/c you can just vbet your toppair and get calldown from smaller pairs b/c if you c/r K83 flop everybody thinks you just want to steel a pot and if e.g. they bet this flop with J7 and you c/r them, they just call your bet and if they hit 7 on the turn they call down.

Edit: If it is 1/3 structure I fold both of these hands.

Hi strat9,

you don't need 50%+ to isolate someone. Here the article about it:
http://www.pokerstrategy.com/strategy/fixed-limit/50/

A general rule is to almost never call the SB. Either raise or fold. With suited connector it's often good to just call but K5s is not the best hand to flop a lot of draws.

1) Raise with and without multiplier. Great opportunity to get headsup with a fish.

2) Fold. The hand plays pretty bad 3-way out of position and isn' t strong enough to 3-bet. 47% is the lowest to isolate im but as you are out of position I prefer a fold sligtly more.

EDIT: About your questions:

1) Should be answered in the article above.

2) Good question. I think the hands to be limped are at leat in the ORC? So the quity against BB should be alright. (Could be totally wrong.)

3) A preflop multiplier for VPIP? Where did you see that? :) I know only one for PFR (the one above the approx ORC). So I don't think that a multiplier should be even considered.
Preflopcalls are often a sign of a bad player so they often don't care about where they limp from anyway.

4) Is this article new? If so I need to read it first. Sorry. :)
If the hand is good enough to isolate him the do that instead of completing.

5) The chart is the easy way. The more complicated is based on equity as the article tells you I guess.

As you can see, I was having trouble making up my mind in some of these situations, so the replies are much appreciated.

The article I'm referring to is using the equilator.

The article Cirith linked talks about completing only with an open limp (I think, at least in the "completing the small blind" chapter). But that is definitely a good article and I will be revisiting it. I probably just need to do that, really.

The preflop multiplier I was talking about referred to the pfr. The equilator article uses the vpip - pfr, but uses a static pfr value that does not change with position. That's all I was talking about.
