I 3 bet here preflop because I wanted to build the pot against so many opponents, hoping to hit the flop hard. I barely hit it at all but with two overcards and a flush draw and a pretty big pot. Then I picked up a gut shot, still with enough odds to see river.

What were my mistakes here?

Should I cold call preflop?
fold on the flop?
raise the flop to try for a free card?

or something completely different?

*sorry for my English

You can't fold on flop. Getting 1:25,5 it's enough just for backdoor flushdraw ;)
Turn also cannot be folden because of gutshot.
And preflop 3 seems fine to me.
I don't mind raising for free card here...just let the people stay in hand to pay you off when you hit flush/straight. I think It's VNH

ya same here. raise for freecard is pointless vs so many ppl. you basically never have the best hand here and play strictly after odds&outs, and you can easily draw for backdoor straight + OCs on the flop for half a million to 1 and for the GS on the turn for 17:1... nice hand.

3bet Preflop is fine, being on the button with such a good hand and with coldcallers insbetween. Neither raise nor fold on the flop is an option. On the flop with a backdoor Gutshot and Overcards and especially with your backdoor Flushdraw it's good to call one time to see the turn but on the turn you have to fold, even though your odds are quite good but lets see.

it's likely that CO does have 2pair J8 J9, a set or QT. against all these hands your overcards don't count anymore and you can just rely on your gutshot-outs. you are getting around 1:9 on your call but you need 1:11 without being considered that it could end up in a raising war with 3bet and cap. Fold Turn.
