Preflop call is ok, but should be bottom of your range vs 8% 3better imo.

Flop float is standard especially vs an opponent with 86% cbet in 3bet pots.

Turn bet is fine. Essentially it's just a protection bet and you can get away with betting pretty small in this spot. Even though you may not get called by worse often there is no good reason to let opponent freeroll river with something like AQo. If you end up betting $5 and he calls that's still a good outcome for you though because you extract additional value with an unbalanced smaller sizing.

Also the smaller your sizing on the turn, theoretically the wider opponents turn calling range and the more you'd feel comfortable just checking back the river unimproved.

So overall I really don't think river check/back is bad. Granted, it's a bad river, and you can't expect to be good that often, but if he's rivered an Ax no guarantee he will fold to an overbet anyway. Having said that, I still think the line you took is decent and expect it to be +EV.
