I'm on the receiving end of this bad beat (is it? Or did I just play it badly? It wasn't a dry board, but it wasn't soaking either๐Ÿ˜‚ let's say it is damp). Looking down at J♦J♥, I intended to get the chips in on a favourable flop if I had an over pair, which I did so I did. Turns out I was behind.

Edit: It is a little irritation I have, when people refer to a hand as a bad beat when technically they got the chips in the middle whilst behind! Although I won't point this out to them at the time, it does annoy me they chose to use the bad-beat steam-nose angry smiley with a "bad beat!" speach bubble and its not a bad beat! Chips in pre-flop? Yes, bad beat. Chips in post-flop-no-draw-needed? Not a bad beat. But after this hand I totally get the emotional response ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

This villain's play is distinctly fishy, right? Or has the game changed so much that cold calling a 3-bet from the blinds, that's after UTG raises and gets a caller from MP, is considered standard play or some variation of clever - with T♣3♣? It's suited. Do we do this now, with any two suited? Or am I just being a big-moaning-whale, crying over their yet another (technically not a) bad beat story๐Ÿคฃ? (Edit: Or. Am I the fish here!? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ™ˆ)

Here's the hand:
gg.gl/si9db

J♦J♥ Worst. Pair. Ever. Lol. Never win with these.

Haha!: I just got dealt this again as UTG just shoved on me with A♦K♥, my Jack's J♠J♣ held. Phew. I'm still around 2 buyins worth of chips so way above average with 50mins before rebuy period ends.

You're technically correct.
The situation where you get it in when you're ahead of their range, only to find out that they have the top of their range is technically a "cooler". However, bear in mind that the English language evolves. It evolves so much that "that's unbelievable!" now seems to mean the same as "that's amazing!", instead of "You're full of bullshirt!", which is its literal meaning. Speaking of literal, people now seem to use "literally" to mean "figuratively" which is its exact opposite.

The danger in these situations comes when you begin to alter your play and fold hand that are ahead of opponent's range.
When you do that you lose money in the long run. We don't play against hands, we play against ranges.

A "bad beat" is actually reserved for those times when you get it in w/ > 90% equity (on what ever street) and opponent sucks out on you.

I love the opportunity to be pedantic. Thanks!

Oh that's so true! Another of my little pet hates, this one! You're literally bang on the money with this little observation, and I absolutely hate it! It's unbelievable the amount of people who a) overuse these expressions and, even more astonishingly b) don't get, don't agree with, and will literally argue the point when you point out and correct their error(s)!

Vorpal, I think you and I are two peas in the proverbial pod and this may be the start of a beautiful friendship ๐Ÿ˜Š.

EDIT: I'm not sure if you're UK based, and may not have watched comedian Dave Gorman's series "Modern Life is Good-ish", but irregardless (ROFL! sic.), you should check it out on YouTube. The basis of his humour is observational humour mostly highlighting these sorts of errors and other behaviours like it. He's right up our street! You'll like him.

Vorpal, here's a link to the correct time in that episode where he talks about this peculiarly english language evolution issue, of people confusing phrases/idioms, changing their meanings, etc. Hilariously funny! He gets it, just as we get it.

It's a doggy dog world. !?!? ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ even funnier is that people not only believe that's the correct expression, but that you're the stupid one for saying "dog eat dog world".

True story:
When we first started dating, the mother of my daughter, whilst eating a new brand of confectionary, once said to me "oh, you've got to try this. This is absolutely the B's and E's".

Not to give up an opportunity to be a pedant, I innocently enquired, "erm, do you mean the bee's knees?", after she used the expression twice during the same conversation.

She laughed, and said "no! I mean B's and E's, the letters. What's so fuckin' special about bee's knees?!"

In fact, she was so astonished at my ignorance, she brought up my funny saying later on, during our evening meal at her mother's house, and with her younger sister present.

Her mother repeated almost word for word the reply I had been given earlier - "what's so bloody special about bee's knees that there is a saying about them! You did go to school, yes?"

Since they had never heard someone get this idiom wrong before, they prceeded to spend the next half hour rolling about laughing at my expense. How stupid could one person be, they exclaimed, almost in unison.

I wish I could have remained quiet, waiting for the perfect opportunity to get my revenge, as a dish served ice cold. But I couldn't and I didn't. I just made myself out to be an argumentative twat that never likes to be wrong. ๐Ÿ™Š๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ˜‚

My all-time favourite "catphrase" has to be, "The proof is in the pudding".

Cat phrase!!! ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

RE: my true story above,
Remember the days when a pub disagreement over some random question or topic could go on for hours, literally even days, as two or more parties passionately went at it over the answer, as if it meant something to them personally and not just for the "I'm right" bragging rights?

Nowadays, folks just pose a question, and someone else pulls out their smartphone and googles it. Discussion over, or at least the part where said parties disagree over the potential answer(s). Oh, those where the days!

Oh how I wish this existed when I was dating her, instead of making a prat out of myself even though I was right. Even more, I wish I could have kept quiet until this episode of Dave Gorman, and just quietly got her & her family to watch it for the first time, pause it at the right moment, and just say "HA".

But since we are no longer together, it would have been even more satisfying to have her & her family watch, for the first time, this episode, a link for which I'd have sent to them via email. At the appropriate moment, I'd have inserted a still of my face, with an appropriate expression on my face and the speech bubble "HA!".

Alas, my revenge can never be served ice cold. Nay, that boat sailed the moment I replied to her mother's condescending comment.

I have fixed you're picture and moved you're hand to our hand discussion forum. There fits it better.
Seems well played. T3s shouldn't be in villains calling range pre-flop after you're 3bet. Villain is just lucky this time.

Cheers,

Cold calling 3bet with 50bb stack is probably not that reasonable with any hand. You just invest such big portion of stack and won't close the action. Even when it's +EV with some hands there is decent chance shoving has even better expectation.

Hero is the 3better in this hand, but I expect you talking about the villain in this hand.
