Preflop: I had only 100 hands of this villain at the time this hand was played. He opened 36% on the BU and he had received just 2 3bets in those 100 hands, one folded, one called. None of these were in blind wars. So I 3bet him because these hand is definitely in the range where I'm gonna defend my SB.

Postflop: Sometimes I do this with my air in 3bet pots, just because they fold eveeery time when they don't have the nuts (either on the flop or on the turn). Of course I do it too with my overpairs and AK too so... how does it make any sense for this regular to call with the hand he showed? (Even preflop, I mean wtf, does he think he is gaining money on the long run calling with that to 3bets?! :/ ) I am an unknown reg to him, even if I was a fish, I don't really understand what he was thinking...

There is a "meme" that perfectly reflects Volrath89's state of mind :) :

Similar to a lot of things in life and in poker, the truth is lying somewhere between the two poles.

Question #1: Is villain pre flop 3bet call terrible?

Not really. One of the reasons it's not is Hero's 3bet size, which is only to 9bbs (OOP) when it should be 10bbs. Other thing is, more and more we see regulars at higher stakes profitably defending against 3bets very wide ranges. It's not unusual to see calls in this exact spot with hands such as Q2s, J4s or even 85s. Of course in these lower stakes the average regular is not 3betting as wide on the SB and there are rake considerations. But still, we can't say the pre flop call was terrible, even though it might not be correct.

Question #2: Is villain call on the turn bad?

Again, not clearly bad. It's obviously a bluffcatcher, so are hands like 88-TT. So if you think calling with 88 in villain's shoes is not bad, then calling with Q7hh is not bad either. It's true that the turn card (the K) favours the 3bettor a lot, even so, BU should be calling most of this types of hands (and probably fold hands like AT/AJ/AQ, 9Ts and so on. Unless we can make the read that villain is simply not bluffing enough (but then maybe fold pre flop).

As for Hero's play, it's true that flop favours the 3bet a lot and we should be betting most of our range. But "most" is not the same as "all", and Ah2h is one of those that are the first ones to go into the check/folding range, reason being that they are dominated by a good amount of BU's flop calling combos (which should contain a bunch of better Ax) and that it plays poorly in future streets. Turn is fine to barrel since it's such a nice card for our range. River is tough to say, I feel we have such a range advantage that we can get away with triple barreling a lot, and intuitively should make sense right? Villain should not have many Kx (only KQ and some combos of KJs/KTs) and very few Jx.

I hope this gave some insight into the hand. Let me know about further questions regarding this hand.

Thanks to double2, hero is getting closer to understanding postflop ranges.

One idea to remember is that it is ok to get 2 streets of value with 2nd pair (in 3bet pot).
If flop comes K:d 7:s 6:c 2:d and i have T:h T:c, i am not folding to a second barrel.
If flop comes K:d 7:s 6:c 2:d and i have Q:h 7:h, i am usually folding to a bet >60%

@double2... Is this what you would do?

I'm not sure i understand your question bonecore.

If we are talking about playing on the BU against a 3bet from the blinds, then I don't think we should fold our hand on the turn with neither of those hands (without reads). Actually in that board example you gave it's possible that Q7 is better for calling the turn than TT, because it has 5 outs to a big part of villain's value range (and TT only has 2) and TT blocks some part of villain's bluffing range (like T9s).

First of all, I don't think you should take such a black&white stance, that he either has to be a (huge) fish or a (total) genius : ) he opened from the BU with Q7s after it is folded to him, and then he calls your raise. Perhaps he is behind to your raising-range (but still has decent equity vs that range) but perhaps he thought hey I am IP and can probably realize my equity from in position. He has to call $1.50 into a pot of $4.75 so he only needs 31.5% equity to make the call and if I give you a raising range here of around 21% of hands (262 combos, TT+,A2s+,K9s+,QJs,A2o+,KTo+) he still has 36.4% equity vs that range (vs your actual hand he had 39% equity). So that call is ok vs the range I just GUESSTIMATED. Now on a flop 667 he flops top pair semi-decent kicker and against your range that I selected earlier he is now a 65% favorite. Against better TP he is of course drawing dead, but there are not a lot of 7x hands in your range. Against any overpair he is also drawing very slim, but even if you would take all overpair combos then you have all 88+ that is 7 pocketpairs with 6 combos each is 42 combos but for the sake of staying with the range I gave you it is only 5 pocketpairs of 6 combos each so 30 combos. That is only a small part of the range. Then the turn is a K, sure you have Kings in your range, but if you were not ahead on the flop, you were pretty much drawing to either a 6 or a 3 outer from flop to turn (2 overcards or 1 overcard in your actual hand) so yeah sure the King could have helped you but statistically speaking, even with 2 overcards you will only hit a pair from one street to the next around 12% of the time which is the vast minority. Then you bet again, he calls again with middle pair. River brings a Jd, and vs this range he is still ahead albeit only 56%-44%. So now he sees 2 overcards on the board (which could help your range), he checks behind now which makes sense to me no sense for him to bet here you would not have called with worse anyway. He might have folded to a third barrel though who knows ; ) but even there betsizing comes into play, if you bet pot he only has to still be right 33.3% of the time to make that call so I would actually think you still get to see a lot of calls but that is mere speculation from my part at this moment. FlyingDutchm1n you desperately need to balance your paragraph range.

Why are we even considering here who has stronger range, is a board structure suitable for bluffing etc? The hand is played vs fish, so since when fish shows interest in a hand, then usually fish are famous for calling more than they should, meaning that we should simply bet big with our value hands and dont bluff at all at least without good equity (most of bluffs are -ev vs fish once fish calls flop). When we do range vs range analyses, we consider "solid ranges" or "unexploitable ranges", and not fish ranges, so thats why I would forget about whole theory here, and simply be value heavy, unless we have a solid read that fish overfolds some street (anyway pure exploitable play).

By the way I would cbet all bluffs on the boards which hit fish range bad, because average fish usually overfolds flop, and overcalls turn and river. The turn card is usually a very good bluffing card, but fish just doesnt care about it, he will put you on AQ and call down, and if A or A comes on river he will then put you on JTs.
