First of all, welcome to PokerStrategy!

Regular play is deffo the best way to learn, but I find that by reviewing my hands afterwards (using something like the PokerStrategy Elephant or submitting a hand into the hand evaluation forum) is a really great approach. After each time I play I generally review my wins and losses in the Elephant, because sometimes when you are playing you don't have time to think about what went wrong.

Watching the big money tournaments is also useful, but I think they edit out a lot of the 'normal' play and encourage people to do stupid things. I too agree that bettering yourself is a really satisfying thing - you're in the right place

Another question...as I say I've only recently started playing in casinos so I don't play for large amounts of cash therefore the people playing aren't incredibly tight and cautious because they can afford to loose which in turn means they're willing to risk and the majority generally play loose.

This means that if I try and copy techniques the pros use it doesn't often work, i.e. small balling. If I bet small they often call, regardless!

So my question is how do you recommend I play??

Don't try to copy pros' play. They have waaay (and I mean a lot ♦) more skill and knowledge than you and they know when and why to apply some fancy plays. You'll just burn money most of the time.
Just play tight ABC poker. Articles on this site are a good way to start and most of the time knowledge gained here will be enough. If you want to upgrade it, you can still read couple of books about poker.

TiciBoy, I know what you're saying! I think the more money the buy-ins are the more I feel I should replicate their techniques, because better players are easier to use techniques on compared to rookies who don't really pick up on how you're playing!

There is the odd few opponents I play with who are slightly more advanced than the majority, but the majority are really, really basic, for e.g. someone raised all-in under-the-gun for around 20 blinds and it was folded around to the cut-off position who calls with a similiar stack with A 8 off-suit...what's the incentive behind that???

1. They don't pick up on raises in certain positions, i.e. If I was that guy in the cut-off position I would take into account that he is first to act so an all-in in that position translates as 'I have a very good hand.'

2. Maybe if he had 10-15 blinds or even if he had 20 but I had a lot more than him I'd consider it.

Very basic! Without actually winning the hand out-right, it's difficult to win!

I'm going to hazard a guess that you're English, if so where abouts are you from? Although I live in Gibraltar I'm cureently in Brighton, if you're from the South you should come down

Its fantastic that you are positionally aware, I mean knowing and concentrating on stack sizes and positionally bets is already advance, now you need to take these into complex situations.

For example when you have a 30bb stack and a 90 bb stack on your left is so different to a 25 and 30 bb stack on your left.

I played a hand in the Venetian deepstack this week which went, C/O opened to 2.5x (can be super super wide here) BU 3bet to 7.5x w/32bbs effective, I expect this to happen over 10% of the time. I was in the small blind and jammed to put them both all in although I had like 85 bigs, the big blind had 15 bigs and folded. Now if the bb had 100 bigs I would have just folded, but because I was aware of a stack behind me that couldnt potentially put me at risk and even if he had kk I was 30% getting the required odds with Axss.

I'm guessing you play tournmanets full time? Why not post a hand here so we can discuss stack sizes further?

Hey Patrick, I'm from Liverpool.

I feel I am a little bit advanced than players in the casino, even at my age, but that can sometimes be a negative, because when I consider what they're considering, I can often get it all wrong. I think they take into account position yet usually they just take into account their stack size and their cards and nothing more.

Therefore recently I have been altering my game, which isn't always good, but I feel I have to adapt to their game but I can play mine.

E.g. We're down to the final 4 players, first to act with 30 BB opens up with 4x BB and I push with similiar stack with K K. Taking into account the other two players are on tilt in comparison to us two, he still calls with K Qo. Even know it's not relevant he hit his straight on the river.

I suppose that wasn't a terrible call but if I was in his position I wouldn't have called; which just exemplifies the complete antithesis of thought. Which brings me back to feeling as though I have to adapt rather than play my own game.

I don't play full-time, infact I've only just recently started playing in casinos in the last few months. I started off really basic like the majoirty of players in there but I am developing and progressing fast. Hopefully if can learn a lot more because I would love to play in a bigger tournament because I know it would suit my game a lot more.
