Yes, not everyone is going to be a winner. This is obvious. Same applies to everything though. There can't be 20 winners in the English Premier League for example.

Thats exactly the point i was trying to make. In a zero sum game there are winners and loosers, and how many of us have realized that we are loosers?

And no amount of work will turn a born looser into a winner.

WRONG. Simple example: I am not tallented at sports, but I go to the gym regularly and play squash 3-4 times a week. Although I it not that easy for me, I am more fit right now than most of my friends and beat them at squash easily.

But I have a friend, who started playing with me 3 months ago, and right now I have serious problems winning with him. He has a natural born talent, and I'm sure he will be kicking my ass soon. But even if he will, I am better that all of my other friends, even those who are more talented than me at sports.

Right now I am up 20k+ this year, so currently I believe I'm a poker god :f_cool:

Thats incredible. Whats that even like?

This is what i meant in my OP.
Players like this will pitch a long story about how poker is hard work but also a quick way to earn easy money. Meanwhile everyone seems to neglect the fact that most of us are, by our very design, loosers.

NL200 is not possible for everyone, 98% of players never reach these stakes online in any consistent form.

It just kills me to admit that ill never know the joy of being good at anything.

when i thought about it i thought i wold play poker for a living for the rest of my life but now after 2 years of poker i realised i could spend my time at a computer screen watching cards becoming like a brain dead zombi
thats not the life i want to leave so usles i honestly dont admire 1 f.....g poker player just usles parasites

I admire anyone who is good at anything.

Poker is a waste of time and money. Unless you are good at it.

i fucking suck.

my thoughts are a lot like vorpal's post

i also believe that anyone (without mental/physical issues that would make it actually impossible ofc) can reach at least a "reasonably advanced" level at anything with enough hard work.
i have no clue about what would that be for poker, maybe something like beating NL50, NL100? but in classes/chess/lifeingeneral i've seen it many times, someone that isn't naturally very bright would take in a whole lot of time at something and crush the field. i'm sure you all can think of similar examples.

natural talent (+lots of hard work obv) is needed to reach the very highest levels, but "only" lots of hard work should take you high enough. work > talents imo

martiangoblin, how much have you lost at playing poker to be so sad ?(

Nothing enormous, maybe a few grand in the past few years...

and its not the money that matters, its the feeling of being a looser. Poker is just such a fantastic reflection of my life... i suck at both.

And hard work doesnt pay off.

I think that "poker skill" is a myth perpetuated by winning players to keep fools like me at the tables playing. Or maybe it does exist and im just too stupid and undisciplined to acquire it.

Either way, i suck.

this is really sad.
my advice to OP- click "jim rohn" on you tube and watch everything more than 50 times.

This is every self-help book ive ever read repeated. Tell me something i dont know... like how to actually apply some of this nonsense to my life.

Im sick of this positive goal-setting/thinking/the secret phenomenon. Its a cop-out to the fact that a lot of people like me are retards and will never acheive or do anything worhtwhile.

This positive thinking stuff is just another vice like religion or drug use.

So allow me to say it again: i fucking suck.

I challenge anyone to link me up with any information anywhere that proves me wrong.

*Edit: and yes, it is sad. Im a sad sack of shit.

I have nothin better to do than to sit here and ego-troll my own stupid thread.

Does anyone out there know what it feels like to suck at everything??

yeah that makes me sick too. the truth is... how much actual work are you willing to put to try to change the state of affairs?
working hard is not a guarantee of success, life is full of variance and it can be sick. but at least you are somehow increasing your life EV which helps your chances of running better.

most people just can't put any good amount of effort at anything that matters. and no, i'm not just preaching, that totally applies to myself too...
i know i'll most likely never achieve, like, nice grades or chess FIDE master level because my work ethics suck and i'm not really doing anything about it. i could give more examples but these should be easy to relate.

well, what's my point? i have no idea. maybe that i'm fine with being average?
feel free to interpret it as you wish.

I'm new to on-line poker (1 yr) and striving at it, not really winning. I guess my question somehow related to OP would be, of all the 10,000 new players for example who would play on-line poker (some just playing and some working on it...) for say maybe 3 yrs, what would be the percentage of players who'll make it as:

1. successful winning players climbing the stakes
2. winning players but will stay at micro-low stakes
3. breakeven players (slightly winning, losing, recreational players)
4. will lose and not make it

any ideas or estimates? I think I read something like only 1 in 10 players will be successful. If we have this estimate figures then we can see where we stand and maybe accept it, otherwise we have to do something about it....

Maybe thats the key... set my standards so low that no matter how shitty things get, im still acheiving my goals, because i dont have any goals.

Or maybe when i get over this phase of feeling sorry for myself, i can just be honest and accept that im a looser. Then ill be free to go about my day with no goals, no ambitions and no dissapointments.

Maybe the key is to just say fuck it and get drunk.

Or maybe im just a looser.

The ratio is probably divided just like any other demographic in society. Sports, dating, trading stocks, any and all fields you want and heres the magic ratio:

10% are consistently succesful
80 % are average
10% are consistently loosers

Now, my question once again:
Has anyone realized that they are in the 10% of consistent loosers category?

Yes, for the past year I'm at 10% consistently loosers category, but in poker, 1 year is nothing. I intend to be at the 80% average the coming year, or maybe the year after that. If after 3 yrs I'm still losing, then I'd have to decide if I'm quitting or just be a losing recreational player.

@martiangoblin:

I also think that every person has at least 1 thing they can be good at, they just have to figure out what that is.....Good Luck!

I think youre right, and yet most people live and die without ever finding out what that is.
But yea, maybe what im good at is serving as an example of what not to be.

Dont be like me kids, it sucks to be a looser.

Broken dreams will leave you a broken person.

I fucking suck.

Maybe this is ubershit, but i think that your way of thinking you are a loser makes you a loser...

Try to be more optimistic, if you think: please don't let a spade hit the river, the spade will often hit... But if you think: bring me another As so i can prove to that bastard i exploded him, you will be more happy even if the spade hits.

If you shipped your money in with the good odds, you'll make profit on the long run, even if you lose 9 times out of 10 when you're a 3-1 favorite, you played well and don't feel bad if you encountered a couple of losing days. Be happy to play good and learn to play good...

Poker theory is very easy to learn and apply when playing on micro's...

When you start your session you shouldn't think: ok... now, how many badlucks will I get. You should think: how many donks will I explode :)

You can't control variance, so don't worry about luck... And just put the effort to read a couple of articles on this ubersite! They learned me to be a winner and even if i had 3 losing days in a row i come confident to my computer and just want to show them donks how to play poker.

If you don't have any fun of exploding people... Then don't play.... What's the point to...

As mentioned earlier a positive mindset/attitude breeds success.

I think a break away from the game to recharge yourself mentally is the ONLY place to start.

I am sure every serious player has done this a multitude of times in the past! I can speak from a personal level here too as I have done so.

There is no quick fix for success in life. If you want something enough, you have to sweat it out!

My 2 cents,
Gary
