Yes - I suck at poker. You could call it a broken dream for me cause when I first started in 2008 was thinking of going pro one day. Since then I have realized that I'll never make any serious amount of money at this game. At least if I do not change my attitude dramatically. But I don't handle it like some sort of tragedy.

Numerous times I have cashed out everything just to restart few months later. Thing is - I can't keep focused at one game. Every time I quit it's because of boredom. Then- one day something happens just like that- boom. And I'm ready to study and grind as hell. And every time at new form of poker. Last time this happened I was interested in FL 5CD made nice roll playing micros just to realize that I won't be beating 0.5/1 with out decent dedication- boooring. Probably I'm not competitive enough.

Last week cashed out again left only 60$ for .1/.2 to spew around. Waiting for new wave of inspiration :)

By reading your posts it looks like you probably have issues with depression, and that's gonna limit any success you have at this game, never mind severely affect the quality of your life.

See if you can get some help from a trained professional first before you worry about being a winner at poker.

I'm glad you realise you suck.

First step towards playing pro poker. Most people never reach that first step =D

(Like Ihufa for example, but it's alright for him because he has god-mode enabled)

i agree with the last 2 posts.

Please understand that you dont just suck at everything. It just feels like it.

Go speak to your doctor before this thing takes controll over you.

And in the mean time dont play poker.

Everybody has times, when they doubt in their abilities. You have to realize how great life is, no matter what. We are so lucky that we were not born in third world countries like North Korea or Iran, we have to just appreciate it every day :)

I'm actually not sure if you are trolling or if you really think that low of yourself. If you think you suck at something, well guess what: you're gonna suck at it.

I too realized once that hey... i'm not as good at poker as I thought I were. I too felt like I wasnt good at anything (but I actually was, just not poker or like a billion other things - but there was plenty of things I was good at, you just see past that in that state of mind). It can be quite an overwhelming feeling.

I felt hopeless, that I'd have to play poker for fun, or for a slight bit of extra money. I was pretty damn sure I'd never make it in the pokerworld. I had given up the hopes of becoming a pokerpro. But guess what. That's what I am now. I may not be even of average skill compared to all the other pros out there, or make even close to average, but I earn enough money for a decent living - and the dream I had about playing poker and going to a pokerhouse in a far away country in a baller house - well, that's happening in exactly 30 days.

Nobody is lying when they say poker requires hard hard work. But I don't think all tell the whole truth either. It's not that poker is supercomplex, and that to reach NL200 you need to be some wizkid. The hard work is actually being your own boss. The hard work is, being able to push yourself even at times when you don't feel like it, the hard work comes with trying to change the behaviour that used to be normal to you - but doesnt quite fit for a good pokerplayer. The hard work comes with changing the way you think, the way you react. This is especially hard for emotional and lazy people - like me.

I'm not lying when I say getting to where I am required some hard work. It did. It does require hours and hours of playing, analyzing and learning. But that's not the most challenging nor the toughest part of poker. The biggest challenge is to get yourself to do it. The toughest part is being your own boss, the boss that you most of the time hate.

Fwiw I don't think everyone has it in them to become good at poker. Actually, thinking about it, I do think everyone does. Some just don't want to push through, and do things neccessary for success. Some people give up at first sign of struggle. Some people like to sit around thining they suck at everything, instead of getting their act together and make sure they become good at something. Some people simply do not have the mentality to get to where they need to be - but everyone has it in them. It's there, if they just want it to be.

Keep working, keep dreaming, and keep playing

i like how vonki thinks as a poker player
but i think even him is not a winner in the sennse his not doing anithing brave extraordanary hes just gone play poker on his computer for the rest of is life now thats f....g pathetic

Poker is a negative sum game b/c of the rake.

There are many more losers in poker compared to winners. Losing at poker can be fun if the money isnt significant to you. For these players who are the vast majority at any live poker room at 2/5 NL or lower, poker is just like any other form of EV- gambling. Sometimes they win, sometimes they lose but they have fun sweating the river (whether they get it in as a huge dog or huge favorate), building massive castles outta chips on the rare day when they have a big score, and cursing the poker gods for their terrible consistent bad cards.

To become a winning poker player doesnt really require any personal trait. Anybody can beat NL25 and lower online and 1/2 NL casino games if they put in the time and effort. To beat higher stakes requires a certain kind of individual but if most people put in the neccassary effort it is attainable.

thankyou for the kind words vonki.

I think im done.

First of all, I am not a "he".

Second, I do not now, nor will I ever spend all of my time playing poker. That is also why, I will probably not become a high stakes pro anytime soon :)

Just because somebody earns their living through poker it doesn't mean all they do is play poker 24/7 every day of the year. I actually spend less time "working" than my dad does (std 40 hour/week job) and meanwhile earn more money than he does.

Poker also makes it possible for me to travel around the world, and take my job with me.

I also don't think I'll be playing poker for more than another 5 or so years. Poker just really suits the life I want to live right now, which is enjoying my youth and freedom. I want to travel around and see the world and experience life whilst meanwhile saving myself a buffert to start a business or start investing down the line. I can't think of any other job that would fit in ;)

What is pathetic about being a poker pro? Have you ever worked anywere?
It gives freedom - you can work anywere you want, you are your own boss, you can work less than 40 hours a week to make a decend living.

Last summer I was an intern in Deloitte (well known consulting company) in Advisory. It is well paid and quite prestigious job, but you spend 10+ hours everyday, mostly im front of your computer. If poker is pathetic, how would you call this?

I think you are crazy, or your goal is to work as little as possible for less than average salary. If so, feel free to call me pathetic.

knowing you suck is the first step to becoming good at something. Babies suck. look at what they achieve!

Imagine that 5 year olds everywhere kick your ass at those languages that you thought you learned in school.

now imagine what you would achieve with poker if you treated it like babies treat language. There is no such thing as "I can't"

well i think its ok if u dont make it ur lifes goal 2 bee a professional poker player and u just enjoy the freedom that poker gives u
but my opinion is make poker a means to other things not an ends.
sure glad u didnt batter me like some poker addict wich poker guverns his life
respect

i think there may be some confusion going on as to what "professional poker player" means.
do you mean this as appearing on TV, being world famous and such? :f_biggrin:

i think vonki is using the term as in "making enough average monthly income from poker to live reasonably"... which means enjoying the freedom that poker gives you, kinda.

[edit: nevermind, looking over the posts again i guess you meant it as something like "someone who grinds like 10 hours every day" :f_eek: that's probably not any better than a normal job (even worse), but it's valid why not]

I fully agree, I also know people for whom poker is whole life and that is very sad. It is also true, that a lot of poker players doesn't have normal lifes and have friends mostly in pokerword.

But it is not true that it applies to all of the pokerplayers, so by making this assumption you can offend a lot of people.

Peace :f_grin:
