Depressing to limp in with 44, 55 even 22. Hitting the set on the flop but hey presto so has someone else? How the hell should I be looking to avoid these?

not at all! this does not happen often enough to make a fold profitabel if you get action
i would say you could only think about folding such a hand against an absolute rock who only plays the nuts and you are deeper than 100BB
i would lose 100BB on any board that does not contain 3 of one suit and 3 three connected cards
That's rare and if it happened to you with those three hands, well, laugh about it. I am! 
We are talking about sets right, no trips...
Only happened to me once, 66 vs 77 (both on the flop). I even remember it!
And I don't recall seeing it with other players.
And here's a nice comparison: I've only seen this once, I've also only flopped a 4-of-a-kind once 
and I've also only flopped a straight flush once ♠_biggrin:!!!

So you reckon calling was the right thing? I hadn't been sat at any of the three tables very long, and not long enough to work anyone out so immediately called. There were overs on the flop but what with flopping the set I thought $$$ were coming my way.

Oh ho ho ho. Thanks for your help lol...Guess it is kinda funny really BUT bloody irritating at the time.
And yes three times with the above pockets, I limped in and flopped the trips/sets. Got beat by, two 1 x overs 44 vs 55 and then 55 vs 66 and the last one my 22 vs AAs.
Any more advice guys. Love it. Keep it coming

why just call his flop raise? Re-raise and get the money in right there! Your opponent has shown some strength by raising you here, so you should be looking to get his stack in the middle.You have the best hand possible on the flop, but you still need to re-raise for value and protection. Especially with a potential flush draw out there.
So you would have lost the hand anyway, but at least you would have got the money in as a huge favorite.
Admittedly, turn is an evil card and there's no laying it down then, but you still need to re-raise on the flop for value and protection.
