An excellent question.

Yes, equities assume that hand proceeds to showdown, and your hand (and all its runouts) is compared to opponents hands using the same runouts.

However Equilab's power comes when you compare your hand (or range) against opponent's range.

It isn't as hard-and-fast as "my equity is X therefore I can call a bet of Y or less"

As far as that goes, I'm willing to call a flop with 40% equity but I'm looking for a turn card that increases my equity, or fits my apparent range.

But why not?

If I calculate equity with outs, 40% by the river is 20% by the turn, so I can call a 4:1 bet. Why can't I do the same with Equilab equity?

And if you don't use that equity to decide what size bets to call, what do you do with it?

To some extent you are correct.
To continue we need to accurately estimate opponent's range (or ranges if there are more than one opponent)

One of the problems is that if you bet based on your equity, you become quite readable.
So rather than basing your bet size on your absolute equity instead bet the same amount -- 1/2 pot, 1/3 pot, 2/3 pot or whatever based on the tendencies of the players you're up against.

Equilab can really only be used after the hand is over -- in fact if you open it while GGPoker or PokerStars are open you get a warning pop-up and perhaps a nasty email.

So I'm using the right logic, but it might not be optimal to do it that way?

I tried to open the program up on my phone and it won't work what program do you need for the exe file to open

The .exe file is a windows-specific program file.
