do we bet the river? I didn't like his check behind coz it looked like he had an Ace and called the flop smelling the bluff cbet. Thus I didn't want to bet the river with a weak Ace and I decided to best play check/call small.

You could bet the flop a little bit bigger out of position, but that isn’t too bad I think.
The river would be a thin value bet against most likely a passive player. If he raised than you need to fold.
