PokerStars, Hold'em No Limit - $0.02/$0.05 - 6 players

UTG: $3.99 (80 bb)
MP (Hero): $5.00 (100 bb)
CO: $5.00 (100 bb)
BU: $8.40 (168 bb)
SB: $4.79 (96 bb)
BB: $5.00 (100 bb)

Pre-Flop: ($0.07) Hero is MP with A A
UTG raises to $0.15, Hero 3-bets to $0.45, 1 fold, BTN calls $0.45, 2 players fold, UTG calls $0.30

Flop: ($1.42) J 8 2 (3 players)
UTG checks, Hero bets $0.75, BTN raises to $3.60, UTG folds, Hero ???

I would say that BTN is almost never bluffing here and I should fold. However, doesn't this make me exploitable if I fold anything but a set here? Difficult to balance...

Don't forget this is NL5 and I don't think you need to balance your range yet. Maybe on a higher limit it's more usefull, but even than I would most likely go broke with AA here. Tough to give villain credit for 2 pair or better. Decent change villain could over play top pair as well.

Cheers,

Hm, you think? Whenever I called such a spot, they showed me a set, that's why I actually folded. A raise like this in a 3-way pot is almost never a bluff on NL5 in my experience. You think otherwise?

If you were villain here and had a monster hand. Would you x/r OTF?
Isn't it better to check call? All the good hands here have robust equity and it is probably easier to extract value by just calling, IMO.
I don't want to imply anything, I am seriously wondering and trying to understand villains range.

Same thoughts here. I'm not saying villain's line makes sense, I'm just saying it's my experience that many players play this way with monster hands. That's why I'm interested in what you guys think.

Well villain's line makes sense in that it is a very dry board.
Don't forget that he cold-called a 3Bet pre-flop, which weights his hand toward JJ+ of which you only worry about JJ

If you continue, you're in it for stacks.
If villain is normally tight &/or passive, I'd get out of here.
If he is typically loose &/or aggro, I'd jam the flop.

vs unknown I would swear and fold

I agree with SDK1987, you never fold here in NL5. Villain can be raise AJ-J9 and sometimes he will has it 1010-99 and some draws, 109s, Q10s, Q9s, 97s, 107s and of course QQ or KK. And i think very weird move dry board if villain has the sets raise too much.

Isn`t that top of your range. I guess fold is not bad, but I think I would call here. Also check on the flop is not bad on this board.

Hm, it seems to be a tight spot and I guess you have good points about going broke here. Still, my experience on NL5 says: Fold.

...but then, I looked it up again and I actually DID go broke :f_grin: (I had a similar hand there where I folded and mixed it up.)

Just for closure, I present to you:

Pre-Flop: ($0.07) Hero is MP with A A
UTG raises to $0.15, Hero 3-bets to $0.45, 1 fold, BTN calls $0.45, 2 players fold, UTG calls $0.30

Flop: ($1.42) J 8 2 (3 players)
UTG checks, Hero bets $0.75, BTN raises to $3.60, UTG folds, Hero raises to $4.55 (all-in), BTN calls $0.95

Turn: ($10.52) 2 (2 players, 1 all-in)

River: ($10.52) 3 (2 players, 1 all-in)

Total pot: $10.52 (Rake: $0.44)

Showdown:
MP (Hero) shows A A (two pair, Aces and Twos)
(Equity - Pre-Flop: 80%, Flop: 9%, Turn: 5%, River: 0%)

BU shows 8 8 (a full house, Eights full of Twos)
(Equity - Pre-Flop: 20%, Flop: 91%, Turn: 95%, River: 100%)

BU wins $10.08

Ok, but i think he only call here 1010++, AQs, AKs, but lot of times he will get 4 bet and he have to fold 88 and 1010 probably JJ too. And he doesn't hit a set he have to fold or call with pocket pairs hope who 3beted only hold AQ, AK. So i doubt +EV cold call against 3bet with 88 pre.

I think this was only cooler you can only fold if know villain only do this with two pairs or better hand.

True, I expected JJ to be honest. I see lots of people cold call 3bets with smaller pocket pairs, though.

As a population tendency, I think this is very often the case. (I still have quite a few outs against two pairs.)

Let's find out again next time :f_thumbsup:

Yes if villain has two pair you have got 8 out. But i don't think good if you always fold AA here.

Hi

If you know BTN probably never bluffing in this spot, why do you think about balance?
What will be the max ev response when the opponent reduce his bluff range from the GTO ideal number?
