[Closed] Thinking about trying my hand at Omaha

There is a reason why total newbies can't access Omaha strategy on the site (you need to be silver), since its a game of draws you need to be "fluent" with odds and outs calculations first, and you get that most of the time from playing Holdem.

Imho FL being an entirely different horse from PL i wouldn't recommend starting with FL. Especially since afaik only on site has omaha Hi FL traffic , Stars . And even on Stars only 1-2 table / limit.

PLO 2/5/10 is very easy ,just wait for nuts and you make profit.

And at that link all omaha strategy is a half page boredoom about AA24 being better that AKQJ. Heck, i could even find starting hands.

I wasn't specifically questioning why the articles aren't available to beginners and thanks for providing a link that would be accessible to them. (What I was asking Irooz to do rather than just sniping.)

To reiterate the reason I suggest FL (play money) to start is not to learn FL in particular but just to get used to Omaha in a format where you get to play it: You get to play hands to completion on FL and making bad calls doesn't cost much (just 1 or 2 more BBs usually). In PL, you're folding most hands and waiting for a good one and if you make bad calls you lose your stack. Imho it is definately a better place to begin. Not with a view to playing FL for real money, which sadly doesn't really exist.

Were you referring to the link I gave? It was just to provide one example of expert opinion supporting my suggestion that play money is the best place to start (after being insulted by Irooz for suggesting it earlier on). (Not to provide strategy advice although i think you're being a little hard on it if you were.)

Surely, properly composed and formatted articles are easier to find and read than forum posts. (But the latter better than nothing.)

I know what you mean in both cases (surely you mean "just wait for probable nuts and probably make a profit") but I do wonder why odds calculations would be regarded as at all advanced. They are a bronze topic in Texas Holdem strategy articles after all and quite simple maths. Hardly much more complicated in Omaha than in Texas.

Is PLO really, as you say, "very easy"? Easy but advanced?

I'd also love to know: do you agree with Irooz that: play money is a waste of time for beginners and they should go straight into real money?

Or with me, Steve Badger (an accomplished professional) and, I expect, anyone else with more sense than money that "these days the best way to learn how to play poker is by playing the free poker games"?

Playmoney is a waste of time. Read articles, UNDERSTAND them, then hit PLO Full Ring, always draw to the nuts, then hit SH when you're comfortable with PLO math.

I've started in real money instantly, made profit, never looked back.

This is my personal advice. I'm not Badger, I'm not Weasel, and I'm not insulting anyone. Deal with your tilt problems, otherwise PLO will hurt very much.

Personally, I think play money is absolutely fine for picking up the basics. It let's you quickly understand what hands are actually good and what are not.
When everyone is going to showdown you understand the limited value of non nut flushes and you also practice evaluating your hand on the flop to see whether you should continue with them in a multiway situation.

However full ring PLO should be the next step up from that, not limit plo. You will pick up many bad habits from playing limit (primarily thinking that it's cheap to go to showdown, and being too loose).

It really depends on your personal circumstances whether you start at PLO cash or play money, if your roll is limited, then playmoney is the only place to start.
