I wonder how is it possible to go up the ranking? Is it possible to do so without having to pay for a status? If yes, how?

Pass the quiz.
Play on affiliate room, i.e. you will pay rake from which it will generate points required to advance in status.

As Rihard as stated, taking advantage of a free money offer will give you lifetime Bronze status as well as giving you a tracked room to earn StrategyPoints (SPs).
We also have an ongoing 10 for 1 promotion where if you earn 1 SP a day (equivalent to .25-.40c rake), you'll be given 10 bonus points. With only 100 SPs required for silver status, this makes it easy to get. As a matter of fact, that's how I used to get to Silver.
Alternatively you can buy a status.
