My degree was in Geology, and I've always wanted to visit an active volcano.
I've been to only a few dormant ones.

Iceland is probably one of best places to find active one 
It's really cool watching volcanoes erupt or do their thing at a very safe distance. But I would never go near an active one. 
When I was in grade 4 (about 10 yrs old) the island of Surtsey ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surtsey) was created.

We saw a much better video when I was was 12 or 13, but I cannot find it now

I got my original degree in Geology.
I have been on a couple of active volcanoes -- but not ones erupting at that time.
Some steam venting was all there was...
But I would love to feel the heat from lava.
If I had a bucket list, it would be on it...
The closest one I got to is Piton de la Fournaise in Reunion (our European neighborhood in the Indian ocean).
Was awesome weather, but unfortunately we were getting up there a bit too late, around 12pm. From there you have to go about 700 steps down to a plateau and then walk across to the actual crater. I was down there at this little pimple you see on the Google Maps photo.

In the east of the island was a lot of smoking ground, we been there 2010 and the last time it spit before that was 2007. So quite amazing that it was still steaming after 3 years.
Seen recently a short documentary of the Laacher See in Germany (a water filled volcano). As they said there, it could still break out. You can also see the bubbles coming up from the ground.
There is a monastery beside the lake and in the old time some monks got mystically killed. Only later they found out that their sleeping chambers were located a bit too deep, so they basically got gassed by the lake. Unfortunately this documentary was in German.

Oh wow, I missed the old days. We went there 5 years ago with my Aunt as our tour guide. I really love the campground at Odell Lake (forest service campground on the east end of the lake). It is right on the shore of the lake, so has a beautiful lake view, but is small enough so that we aren't parked in the middle of the parking lot. We're just right across the creek from the Odell Lake Lodge, very nice view.
Another thing, the Wildlife Safari at Roseburg Oregon is certainly worth the trip. There is a very nice campground affiliated with the park nearby. So many to remember...
