Dear fellow gamblers,

Chapter 1 - building a bankroll p1 - 20

:spade: tl;dr: About how I got my BR from around $400 to $10k.

Spoiler

My name is Frederik (turning 37 this summer) and I have decided to keep a blog/diary. The morst important reason is that I wan't to have some accountability for my actions.

Back in the day I was a student I made some good money with poker (guess around €20k) mostley with SnG and MTT. When I graduated poker became an outlet to forget work and really clear my head. So the €20k disapeared rather quickly but I make good money so thats actually not an issue. 2021 was a game changer. I was reading about FIRE and one of the tips was "make the same money with less work/hours". Well easier said than done, I am a projectleader for road constructions and basically every hour i'm awake i'm reachable for work or working. So that was not a real option specially because I love my job.

August 2021 a couple things happend coincidential. I was getting 'backstabbed' by my boss and a great opportunity passed my way to get a job close to home with the same wage. So december 2021 I decided to give it a go.

So now I have a job with close to no stress (75 calls/day -> 2 calls/day; 100 mails/day -> 100 mails/day but 90 are not for me :) )
Afther a week or 2 I noticed when I was playing poker I was like really sharper then before and had more energy and less frustration when bad beats happened or whatever. Also find time to sport and meet with friends and most of all my wife and 2 kids (5 and 9).

So from januari 1st I decided to give poker another serious go. MTT's are to draining and cash games 6max wich I've played a lot are rather boring compared to short deck. Afther losing a couple $500 deposits I saw that this game really needs a good BRM (wich means 100BI as recreational) so I deposited around $150 and started NL2. When I was around $200 I started NL5 and that's where I am now:

Graph NL5:

BR: 377,57$

Goal poker long term: Profit $1000 a month
Goal poker short term: Have fun, play 100k hands this year (currently 22.091hands but i'm 2 tabling now in stead of 4)
Goal health: Lose weight (currently 109kg) started gym 3 weeks ago (3 times a week is the schedule) and rearrange my feeding pattern.

So the swings are very huge in this game I will update the BR monthly!

Investements made:
- Solver GTO6+
- Oranges6+ calculater
- Preflop charts
- Some vids on pre and post flop play

Hi Fredjen,
Welcome to PokerStrategy.com blogging section... :welcome:

I gather from the title that you'll be playing short-deck poker?

On what platform?

I've had a look at it, and thought I might give it a try.

Best of luck :gl:,

So as studying goes I'm playing around with the GTO6+ tool witch look grate but seems not so easy to get the right info. Does anyone know if it's possible to give different betsizes in stead of just 1?

Any other tips or links to info are surely welcome.

So this is why we need at least 100BI in short deck (def not saying I played it all good - Studying is necessary):

#ShortDeck #Variance #MentalHealth #BRM

Update of this week:

Also played some tourny's but no $$$ won (2x3.3; 2x4.4; 1x5.5 and 1x11 (sat).

Was kinda sick so really need to get back in studying and sports next week.

The red line is going down to fast. It's partly because of the stake and the fact that people don't fold enougt to isoraises but also me for not knowing the ranges enough and not able to take sports post flop to stab and take it down without showdown.

Yeah, I noticed that also.
Another nifty thing I observed: People are chasing flushes a lot — so you can value bet straights, sets and even top two if there is a flush draw on the board — you'll get called by non-nut flush draws a lot.
At the same time, they're scared of flushes. I found I can profitably bluff when the 3rd card of a suit falls on the turn or river — especially the river. It doesn't work if the flop is monochrome — if it is, people that hold a card of that suit will call.

All the best,
VS

Yes this is very true, I'm now realizing that because I know the ranges better I'm also bluffing more because in theory they can't call. But because its NL5 they do :). So it's basically keep playing tight. Take way less spots and don't tilt.

Do you play on PokerStars?
Do you collect 'throwables'?
The currently have a challenge for a 'throwable' that requires you to lose two hands with TT or better hole cards.
In shortdeck this should be dead easy.
Hand needs to go to showdown, but no minimum stakes, and all game types eligible — but I suspect that PLO, and draw games are out.

Any particularly interesting moments in that video?
Five and a half hours is a bit long to watch...

I believe it is more about, that this game is gaining a lot of popularity. In Asia it is already no 2 poker variant. It has all required chances to be bigger than PLO in west also. There are few reasons:
1. It has a lot of gamble
2. There's no big difference from NLHE
3. It has a big rake
4. It's not solved

all 3 partys are happy here,
1. room because of rake,
2. recreational because of equity run so close a lot of all in 55-45%
3. Reg because winrate achievable 20+ a/100
4. Game is not solved
