Laptop sound not working

Quick update - I just restarted the laptop and the sound worked for a few minutes (on Stars at least), but then cut out.

Very annoying..

Hey Vorpal, I'm running 64bit Windows 8.0 (86x - whatever that means)

No there is no sound whatsoever, through speaker, headphones/sets, or through my bluetooth surround system. I tried regular headphones and my USB headset.

All drivers and programs (Adobe, Java etc) are up to date. Postgre seems to be the only thing on my system out of date.

Device manager says everything is running normally, but it can't play the "test tone". An error message pops up when I try to test it, but all it says is "cant play test tone".

I didn't change any settings or do anything unusual prior to the problem. It just happened...

Everything was fine one day, next day, no sound

have you tried running malwarebytes antimalware?

I've had this problem before.
For some reason the sound had turned itself off, all by itself.
I had to go to the speaker setting and manually turn them back on to get sound.
What turned them off in the first place I'm not sure but I do have an idea.
My granddaughter has a case that closes with magnets. She had set the case next to my laptop.
I was not willing to try this again to see if that was what caused the problem as it hasn't done it since and why break something that is working again.
Is there anything magnetic close to your computer?
Just a thought.

Actually thats one thing I haven't done. I haven't run an antivirus. I do have one on the machine but it hasn't reported anything. I didn't think a virus or malware would affect sound.

Marxbros, no there is nothing magnetic near the laptop. Where/which settings did you use to turn the sound on.

I don't think this is the problem as the speakers in my icon tray are all on full. The machine is not muted. Also, the sound does work for the first few minutes the computer is on, then it switches off.

Have you tried going into the hardware and sound troubleshooting and the clicking on the hardware and Devices icon?

Yeah, it all looks fine, but then when I go to test it it won't play the test tone, and won't offer further solutions.

or even just clicking on the speakers in the control panel when the sound isn't working to make sure the speakers have the green check mark beside them?

I know very little about computers, but I feel like the fact that I can't play youtube vids is important. Like that means something...It must be related to the audio problem...

I don't know what though. Software issue or something.

I'm not to sharp at this myself.

Dam mods always have something better to do
The only other thing I can think of to do is to go into the Microsoft Management console, click on the Troubleshooting event viewer and follow the instructions.
Other then that it's $50 at the computer shop to fix what ails it.

The reason it wont play the test tone is because you don't have anything highlighted in the sounds tag.
There are 4 tags across the top which you know.
When in the sound tag you have to click on one of the subsections on the bottom. Then the test button will highlight and you can then run a sound test.

I just manually disabled and re-enabled both audio driver. Sound is back, but who knows for how long!!!

Pretty weird considering I reinstalled them both earlier.

Celebrated too early. Resetting the drivers had the same effect as restarting the PC. Sound went again after a few minutes.

Vorpal say "Windows 8" and went and hid under the couch.

It does sound like hardware though.
What make of laptop?
My HP laptop has a touch-slider on the keyboard up near the screen. You can slide your finger over it, and adjust the volume. If you go to far it turns off. (I knew a girl like that once).

Can you take it to where you bought it and complain?
