SB ($16.31)
BB ($6.68)
UTG ($15.43)
Hero ($20.37)
CO ($26.03)
BTN ($46.26)

Dealt to Hero K♣ Q♠

fold, Hero raises to $0.48, fold, BTN calls $0.48, fold, fold

FLOP ($1.20) J♠ 7♦ 2♥

Hero bets $0.76, BTN calls $0.76

TURN ($2.72) J♠ 7♦ 2♥ T♠

Hero bets $1.73, BTN calls $1.73

RIVER ($6.18) J♠ 7♦ 2♥ T♠ 7♥

Hero bets $3.04, BTN calls $3.04

This Villain definitely doesn't like to fold continuation bets. Sometimes vs this kind of villains, in this kind of boards (very favorable for the open raiser aka: me) I go on and check/fold, but more often than not I cbet expecting him to call me, then I barrell turn (many fold here), and then if he calls again I pray to be not against a set and barrell again (so far, everyone - regs - had folded here). Well of course it depends, if I hit something I might check/call or w/e...

Take into account that before this hand he had only 4 hands on the turn as preflop and flop caller, and 2 on the river. Plus, there was a big fish on the table so I guess some of his callings on turn/river were vs the fish.

Was my line kind of reasonable or a big spew? :/

Since a blank occured on the river plus there were no draws he would've targeted you had no basis to bluff on the river, it is as simple as that.

I don't know but villains don't like to fold especially when a blank comes on the river, especially vs a 1/2 pot sized bet. I dont think you can fold out AJ, KJ

I agree that the river bet is not ok. Anything that called 2 barrels will call again on blank.

Bet flop much smaller, beside that he really don't seem to like folding, so I'm prolly giving up after the flop bet.

He looks a bit nitty and does call a descent amount of time, i won't bet that rivercard because he will still call it with Jx.

I disagree with everyone hehe, now after some time (I posted the hand almost right after I played it, doubting of my play) I think I would play the same...

It seems I look poker from a slightly different angle. I don't like the argument "don't bluff a blank on the river" and "whatever he has on the turn he won't fold to a river blank". I try to think only in what hands are in his range and what hands do I represent (so, usually doesn't matter what I actually have). In this hand I represent very well an overpair or a TPTK; and taking into account that he has a wide calling range (everything on the flop, seems a lot on the turn too) that makes it for me.

What could he fold on the river that he has called the turn with? Well KQ, Tx, a Jack with a weak kicker, every combination of A :spade: X :spade: , I'm sure he would have called the flop with 99,88 and every pocket behind that too.

Of course he won't fold AJ, doubles or better, but I only need him to fold more than 1/3 of a time to make my river bet profitable.

My mistake was probably not betting bigger on the river to polarize my range. That would make I think harder for him to call with Tx, or a weak Jack.. I think he is not good enough to call even a half size bet with A high so even less with a potsize bet.

Well, I think the opposite. I was sure he wasn't folding the flop so I bet bigger because I wanted to win more with my bluff on later streets.

Another very valid option with this hand would be to c/fold the flop, but betting smaller.. I don't really like.

Maybe he would to a river potsize bet :P But yeah I agree with you, he would probably not fold so often a JX as played.

Now out of curiosity, the complete hand:

Spoiler

Hero shows K♣ Q♠

BTN wins $11.71

I was extremely surprised, either the level is now so high that enough people are regularly making 3 barrell bluffs (I doubt) or he had that read on me (but I don't do it so often) or he is a monkey because his play is very questionable (especially the preflop/flop calls)

I strongly disagree with your "angle".
On the flop you are behind vs his whole preflop calling range: JJ-22, AQs-ATs, KTs+, QTs+, J9s+, T9s, 98s, 87s, 76s, 65s, AQo-AJo

On the turn you are massively behind even vs a wider range:
MP2 25.53% KcQs
MP3 74.47% JJ-77, 22, AJs-ATs, KJs-KTs, QTs+, J9s+, T9s, 98s, 87s, 76s, AJo

And on the river you can save some money ( or send it to me :) ) :
MP2 0.00% KcQs
MP3 100.00% JJ-77, 22, AJs-ATs, KJs-KTs, QTs+, J9s+, T9s, 98s, 87s, 76s, AJo

If you've noticed all his turn range has a piece of the board and beat you - 100%. Of 64 combos you can fold maximum of 11 combos - 17% ( ATs, KTs, QTs, T9s) and as you can see from the result even they are not folding every time...

I am glad you search for different angles, but sometimes the logic is killing them.

Well, by that I meant that I also think of what I'm representing not only "river is blank, nothing will fold". And it's been working for me so far really great in NL10 and below.

Yeah of course, I strongly agree and I never thought that I was ahead at any time in the hand. But that's not a reason for not betting, one bets when one thinks it is EV+ and I thought I might be able to force enough better hands to fold. Especially on the turn where he still has a lot of low pocket pairs and air + I have some equity even to beat the nuts.

Now, this is an argument. Considering what I was representing, I thought he might fold some jacks, but judging by the hand he ended up calling with, I was clearly wrong. Maybe villains who play NL16 are actually NL25 regs who didn't find enough tables and don't fold as much as the regs on NL5 and 10. Lesson learned.

Thanks for your detailed post nitrol, I agree 95% with your range estimation.

Well, ranges may vary - 10% range can be top 10% or some random other hands that combined make 10%, that he likes to play, you know.
We cannot estimate his exact ranges, but your 95% assesment looks like we've hit it right, which is ok with me.
I like that you search for opportunities to stay active and unpredictable. This is good.
The bad thing is that from his flop and turn range he folds a very small part which is a lot smaller then the bets you make.
That is my opinion, which may not be true, of course.

Thank you too. Hope to hear other arguments from other players.
