Given the preflop play, you could consider x/c flop and x/r the turn. That's really the only improvement to make in terms of postflop I think, and also what you did is equally as good.

Maybe especially because it's NL5 where IP players barrel too much on the flop and turn which I know from experience it might be better to x/c, x/r turn. Note I don't think x/c, x/c, x river is ever good because AK and even some two pairs will check back river.

I've seen that play before. I've collected plenty of stacks from sets who stacked off after the J came on the turn and gave my cbet that turned into broadway their stack.

Bet-raise-shove the flop for me. To get away from tens here you need one of the following -

* a stat read of thousands of hands that say the villain is an insane rock (including postflop fold stats)
* a live read that really, really scares you

Even then I can't see it. Folding here to the AA set would be a Daniel Negreanu on youtube with 3 million views moment.

This hand as played vs villain described is completely fine. NHWP. Villain can turn up with AK, two pairs, 88, 33, two spades (especially two spades plus a gutter or a pair) here every day of the week. We lose to AA and the A on the flop leaves three combos. Find a fold? Ha! No way! :f_thumbsup:

Well there are pros and cons to both. I prefer to x/c x/r in such a spot since I reckon I need to protect my range like that. If you check raise like this how do you make a flop x/c range on the flop that can also defend against a turn barrel?

Raise pre is a must-do, especially that you've been OOP. Keeping everything simple at nl5 will ease your time there.

Tough hand. I think you played it alright. I would have probably played it the same. Did not expect him to have AA. Before I clicked the spoilers, I put him on AK, AQ, AJ. With a board like that, there is no way that you could get away from this hand. Unfortunate that you ran into a bigger set. Keep grinding, man.

WP, against a nit I would not raise pre since villain will almost never complete and if called, you would be mostly left with a range with a minimum of AJ+ which have the same equity as your tens. OTF playing against a wide range sounds good and indeed, only 3 combos when of yours against many many other combos :) Shit happens. According to Ed Miller in Small Stakes No-Limit Hold'em (2009), your set will be stacked approx. an 11% of the time.

I think the hand is wp.
No need to xc on flop as we lose value and we are not happy to see J, Q, K.

If you are balancing your ranges to get thinking players to not 2nd barrel you more because you *might* be slowplaying them, I guess you have a point, but I still don't like it. Down here in the micros simple plays are often the best plays, and the most simple thing you can do with a monster is Bet Bet Bet.

I have to ask. Do you mean donk+bet+bet? I think there is a chance you missed we are OOP. There is also a chance that you didn't, because donking (big) has virtues. Thinking people will misread you and raise with their bluff catchers (as can be seen in these forums).

I think he means calling the flop and check-raising the turn to protect himself from being two-barrelled when he calls the flop with TPDK

No, I am asking you :) Are you advocating donking on the flop?

Thanks all for your take on this hand, this is my standard play re raise any set, unless its flush.

Not here, no :) By Bet Bet Bet I just mean don't slowplay, not referencing position.

I would donk some set flops where the villain doesn't cbet much and its a rag flop. Here is a x-r-shove.

lets say vilain holds lower Ax, 16/12 is not a spewy guy, so if we raise on a such a dry board what do we rep? But for ex. A8 he is gonna bet two streets and if we raise otf he is not going to be comfortable and might fold. My thougts for particulary this type of oponent and this type of flop. ott it depends would i decide to x/r or x/c/donk r..
