Hi everyone. This is my first post on this forum and wanted to introduce myself. My name is Finn and I live in the UK. I have been playing online poker on and off (recreationally) over the last 8 years or so. I've had a few micro stakes S&G and tournament successes, turning $1 into over $1,000 in a relatively short period of time, cashing it out and building it back up again. I never really progressed out of the micros due to the cashing out phases.
I always struggled with cash games, I guess my game was never strong enough to negotiate my way through 3-streets of action 100bb deep. Back in 2016 I was inspired by xflixx's bankroll challenge and had a go myself. 2NL and 5NL were ok but tilted my bankroll off at 10NL. This experience really highlighted that my greatest weakness as a poker player was my mind-set. I'm a very results oriented person, as soon as my bb/100 started to fall I would rage quit the challenge and start again or just tilt my roll off.
I've started playing the micros again over at Pokerstars for the last few days for a quick warmup. I have to say that the average opponent seems much stronger than back in 2016. I don't know if this is the actual case or whether my skill level has fallen over the last 5 years haha.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand. I wanted to create this thread to document my journey, I don't expect this to be a heavy win rate challenge at all, but I think making my progress public will motivate me to play objectively and to not let my emotions get the better of me. It will also eliminate that desire to restart my Holdem database just because of a bad session.
I'm going to start with $60 over at the 2NL Zoom tables and will play 2-3 tables at a time. My bankroll strategy is to have 30 buy-ins and move up once I have 4 shots at the next level. For example, start playing 5NL at $80, move down at $60, start playing 10NL at $190 (30x$5 + 4x$10), move down at $150 etc. I'm hoping that this bankroll strategy will allow me to move up relatively quickly whilst having the discipline to move down after only 4 shots. I appreciate the shot taking could be damaging for my bankroll, particularly at 5NL as a failed shot will set me back to square one. But I'm happy to take this risk to get out of 2NL!
I will try and post my progress regularly with some graphs and maybe some thoughts on some interesting hands. Once I get going with the challenge it would be great to get some discussions going on here about my play. I certainly have many leaks and any advice would be hugely appreciated.
