Standard Deviation???

Standard deviation is a measure of how wide the bell curve is.
The peak of the bell curve is the average

If all the results are very close to the average, the standard deviation (and therefore the variance) is low, and the bell curve is very narrow and tall.

If the results cover a very wide range, then the standard deviation is large, (so is the variance) and the bell curve is very wide and flat.

ps I took a statistics course over 40 years ago, so I had to look all that up. My eyes glazed over after the first day. How I passed I'll never know.

Correct. Different playing styles typically have different Standard deviations. In HM2 (but not HM3) there is a standard deviation stat so its easy to check things out for yourself.

PT4 has that stat, too.
The standard deviation is the square root of the variance. So yes, those two are closely related.
And yes, like Nuki confirmed, std dev and variance depend on your playing style.

I didn't know that -- I presume it needs a fairly large sample size. Mine is small unless I combine all limits, and worse, I deliberately change from tight to loose to passive to aggressive as needed. I'll have a look later this morning...

What styles produce what standard deviations? Anyone know?
I would presume that my "all over the place" approach would have high variance, but then again, the opposite might be true...

The excellent primedope variance calculator page shows some typical SD values.

NLH full ring: 60-80 BB/100
NLH 6-max: 75-120 BB/100
PLO full ring: 100-140 BB/100
PLO 6-max: 120-160 BB/100

eg.
Some rough ballparks in PLO six max: 25/1 nitty passive type breakeven/marginal winner SD maybe as low as 100BB/100; 19/15 TAG decent steady winner 140-150BB/100, 30/25 TAG crusher 160BB/100 , 45/30 good aggressive style, probable crusher (not enough hands) 200BB/100.
