Passive line with top pair but weak kicker

This is supposed to be rock-bottom of BB defend range, but with a min open, sure I'll see a flop

PokerStars - $0.25 NL (6 max) - Holdem - 4 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

BTN: $25.00
SB: $35.92
Hero (BB): $25.00
CO: $55.25

SB posts SB $0.10, Hero posts BB $0.25

Pre Flop: (pot: $0.35) Hero has 7♦:8♥:

fold, BTN raises to $0.50, fold, Hero calls $0.25

Flop: ($1.10, 2 players) 5♥:7♣:5♣:
Hero checks, BTN bets $0.53, Hero calls $0.53

Turn: ($2.16, 2 players) 8♠:
Hero checks, BTN checks <<< I now have a better two pair — I would have called another 1/2 pot bet or smaller — maybe up to 2/3

River: ($2.16, 2 players) J♣:
Hero checks, BTN bets $3.25, Hero ???

Seems okay.

Nasty spot on the river. I like your check. Not much of a reason to bet.

V's line block big portion of his top range. I expect trips and overpairs to keep barrel OTT. Witch means that JJ is unlikely. That is the good news. The bad news is that players on this stakes rarely double barrel drawing type hands. Most of the time they slowdown OTT and see a free card. Witch means he has plenty of flushes.

On the other hand his massive overbet doesnt make much of a sense to me. You showed a lot of weakness. Your line looks like you dont hold much and yet he makes big stab. If he wants value he should make smaller bet i guess. To me this weaken his range. Also combined with the line you take makes him a bit wider as well.

Without information about V seems borderline to me. But i am towards calling OTR

Tricky river spot, but read less I would most likely call as well with a bluff catcher. If villain is passive I wouldn't mind the fold on a over bet.

Thanks.
I did call, and saw the following:

River: ($2.16, 2 players) J♣:
Hero checks, BTN bets $3.25, Hero calls $3.25

BTN shows 9♦:Q♣: (One Pair, Fives)
(Pre 64%, Flop 28%, Turn 23%)
Hero shows 7♦:8♥: (Two Pair, Eights and Sevens)
(Pre 36%, Flop 72%, Turn 77%)
Hero wins $8.27
Rake paid $0.39

I was a bit surprised, since he checked the turn, and he actually picked up a gutshot then.
In my place, I was more afraid of a random 5 — or even two of them — than the flush

5x or quads will almost never slowplay OTT. Unless he is super tricky player he should second barrel those hands. Especially 5x hands. They need a lot of protection on this particular turn card with flush draw on the board
