pocket 4s facing a 3Bet pre-flop. Flopped set — now what?

I think raising seems on the flop for protection would be fine. Off course if you face a 3bet or shove you need to go for it.
With flatting you keep the pot under control, but than you need to play a guessing game if the turn or river isn't good for you.

How big a raise? I want to keep AQ+ in the hand, but I want draws to pay, so I need to make my raise big enough so that they have marginally poor odds to call.

I would raise to 6.80. So he needs like 40 % to continue and its a 3bet pot, so he will bring in AK and Aq I would guess as well as FDs. Bring it in. Also think if he folds he might call looser next time seeing you doing that. But even if the turn comes like 8 of spades I would still get in with a set here. As A5 and A4, A8 is very likely and you dont want to fold to that

I raised to $8.90, which was a bit more than 3x his bet. and BTN called.

Turn didn't complete anything (9♦ and I have less than the pot left, so I put it in.

3x seems big enough. Off course I wouldn't mind a bigger 1 without position.
Also with your sizing you have a nice stack behind to shove.

I don't think you need to adjust your sizing here too much to make flushdraws pay. That are so few combos compared to Ax hands you want him to pay. So it would be completely ok to give them a slight ok call with flushdraw if you then maximise value against Ax. You raise flop not necessary to protect against flushdraw, but to avoid that action killing turns hit

But here you want to get sizing where you shove turn. So this sizing comfortably does both. So perfect
