It seems that while studying PLO I also learn new things that could help in my NLHE game.
Did you know that there are 17296 possible flops in omaha?
In NLHE there are 19600 combinations of flops.
You find this out the same as finding out how many combinations of starting hands you can get: 1326 in NLHE and 270725 in PLO. For the flop you do 48c3. Which means 48!/(48-3)! *3! ... You take the flop, 3 cards, from 48 cards left in the deck after you get your hand (in PLO) or 50 cards left in the deck (in NLHE).

By knowing how many flop combinations there are we can then dissect it and find out how many will there be 2toned, all suited, rainbow and really get a more deep understanding of how often certain kinds of flops will come and how often we and our opponents will realistically hit. We can then have a better perspective and a better understanding of the game, that will ultimately make us better players.
Happy holidays and a great new year for everybody!
I can see 2012 to be a great year! I will rock it, i promise. Between many things, I plan to get a license to be able to skydive on my own (this is will be so cool, to be able to do anything that I want in air, at 2-3Km distance from earth ♦)
Anyways, yesterday I had my real first grinding day at PLO, I played around 1200 hands in two sessions, 4 tabling. PLO10 and PLO30.
HU pwnage! 1k BB deep. I think I busted villains BR, (last rebuy was only 30 something euros instead of the max as he usually did)
Villain is romanian. Yesterday I played him too and I didn't know how to play him and he owned me with a stack over 360 hands ♦ But in the meantime in my secret strategy building laboratory I came up with a better way to play him
I also play FR while I wait for the HU tables to get action. It's a great combo.
This would have been a record winnings day if I didn't play another player, probably reg, that took from me 3 BI. I was in curious mode and I wanted to see if I can win with OR 100% of sb, he 3bets 25-30% and barrels all streets in 3bet pots. And I had an image of an aggressive maniac. His 3bets were little, 6bb if I minraise, 7bb if i 2.5BB OR, so the plan was to call most of his 3bets and just call down if I hit. Was hard to get any read in 3bet pots, because I couldn't get any hand to showdown because I missed all the time.
He ended up owning me a bit, I called down AQ in 3bet pot on 653sK2, he showed 44, last hand before deciding not to play him because I'm tired. He also checked if he hit the turn, he 3bet QTo, cbet with overcards, check Q turn, bet river for 1/2 pot.
The obvious adaptation that I should have made, but took a conscious decision not to, was to decrease my OR from 100%, to 60-70%.
In single raised pots he also played aggressively. But I'm not sure of how much of this is variance. I almost never had a hand, and when I played back he almost always had a monster. 200 hands total with him.
Lot of text ♦
I really like HU, hours never flied like this. 10 Hours session, and It's like a 1 hour session of SH. It's intense ♠_cool:
It's so awesome to play somebody and to know exactly from what mistakes in his game you will win all his money.
It's a bit of an enthusiastic post. And it's not because I won 6BI today (well a part of it is), but because I just love HU.
I got owned by a fish yesterday for 8BI in 1200 hands. He played in a very strange way and I lost like 3 buyins till figuring out how he plays. I believe that I was bashed by variance a bit, but I am sure I didn't make all the right adaptions and made some bad decisions.
Villain played OR SB: 86%, call open: 86%, call 3bet 80%, 3bet: 5%. And in 3bet pots he just called if he hit any pair and sometimes bet in position small amounts. He played the same game all the way, a very easy to read game: bets bigger than 1/2 pot, usually pot = very strong hands, for value. 1/2p sometimes and always small as a bluff.
When calling from BB he always donkbet 1bb if he didn't have anything, and barreled all the way 1bb.
And all the way he did not make any adjustment! This is interesting, by never changing bit of his game, I started to level myself. The last hand of the match, before decided to quit because I'm not playing good anymore, was me calling in 3bet pot a 80BB bet of pot on the river with K high... he showed full house.
I think it was a very good learning experience. I find that the HU matches that I didn't quite crush are all great learning tools, because I couldn't think anything the next hours, but only what I did wrong what I could have done better, better adaptions, looking at hands and trying to figure out his entire strategy and approach to poker.
I really want to get Diamond to watch the HU vids with elephant and Insyder19. Let's see how fast I will have a shinny avatar
PS: I worked a bit on the HU GTO, I will give you a short insight, if a player open raises 100% to 3BB, you have to defend your BB ~40% of the time, for him not to have a profitable 100% OR. That means you have to split the 40% range into calling and 3betting. You can 3bet 16% and call 24%, this is just a random example, I'm not saying it's good (16+24). If you defend anything less then 40% villain has a profitable 100% OR.
What ranges you choose to call and to 3bet depends on the opponent. Like if villain folds to 3bets a lot and only 4bets, you can choose a 3bet range of polarized hands, very strong and trash, if he calls 3bets a lot, you 3bet good broadway instead of trash.
Now you also know that if you are SB and villain doesn't defend 40% of BB then he is losing money longterm against an 100% ORS, so you can continue to OR 100%.
for the most part i agree with your post, but i don't see what it has to do with GTO play...?
also, given BB folds more than 60%, opening 100% is automatically profitable if you just open-raise and then put in zero money post-flop, but as soon as you put in money post-flop, it's possible that you will play the hand with negative EV.

Isn't GTO, the same as Optimal play? As in optimal play vs exploitative play.
