I discovered this morning that my daughter is not allowed to have a cake in her lunchbox at preschool because it 'causes too many issues'. What is wrong with preschool and primary school teachers? Last year at my son's school sports day, they gave everybody a prize, presumably because they didn't want there to be any losers. My son told me afterwards that he didn't try very hard, because he didn't see the point. No wonder we're bringing up a generation who expect something for nothing. 'I paid good money to come and study at your University. Now I expect my degree!'. Grrrrrrrrrrrr! Real life is turning me into a Daily Mail journalist.

And a student just emailed me to say that he wants to do my Mathematics of Poker project next semester. Eeek! I hope he's not reading this. Fingers crossed he's crushing NL1K and can give me some extra coaching. :f_biggrin:

jbpatzer....NOOOOOOO! One of the reasons that I choose to live outside of the US is the horrible practise of rewarding people for doing absolutely nothing. Sounds like it is creeping its way over here as well.

This is why Americans are not good at football (soccer). Growing up, every kid plays soccer, but not to win. It is just to run around. No tactics are taught, no real training is done. This is evident with my son, the 8 year old. He played for an American team for 3 years (4, 5, and 6 yo). He was easily the best player on the team. We sign him up to play with the local German club...He isn't anywhere close to their level...not close. These 7 yo are crushing volleys from just inside the penalty box! And they are 7!!! My son still shoots with his toe, not ever being taught how to properly strike the ball for a decent shot on goal.

The schools in the States are just as bad..."What, Johnny can't pass the tests? That's okay, we will allow him to go to the next grade, because if we were to hold him back, his self esteem would be crushed and he would become a serial killer!"

And the US wonders why they are falling light years behind everyone else.

There is connection between those two? I should reconsider doing similar in my field. I'm pretty shure there is some influence of bed beats on heart disease.

Didn't FYP. Just fine the way it is. Either way, I expect you're right.

I've now had three students contact me about the maths of poker project, and the list of projects only came out this morning. I hope they don't think I'm going to make it easy. _evil:

The Mathematics of Poker
-------------------------------
Over the last ten years, poker, mainly No Limit Texas Hold'Em, has become an incredibly popular game, both live and online. Many aspects of poker can be modelled mathematically, as described in 'The Mathematics of Poker' by Chen and Ankenman (essential reading if you are interested in this project). There are a number of different simplified games that can be studied using analytical techniques and/or simulation in MATLAB. There are some suggestions below, but I am open to others, and a review project would also be possible. This project is probably only suitable for someone with some experience of playing poker.

i) The Independent Chip Model and Alternatives
---------------------------------------------------------

The Independent Chip Model (ICM) is the standard way of assessing the monetary value of chips in Single and Multi Table Tournaments. However, it has a number of shortcomings. One way of investigating ICM and alternative models is through simulation of simplified games. I have some code in MATLAB to do this, which could be a starting point for further investigation.

ii) Simplified One/Two Street Games
------------------------------------------

The simplest example of a one street game is the AKQ game described in The Mathematics of Poker. I have studied the AKQJ and AAKKQQ games. Further extensions are possible. There are some other interesting examples of the analysis of games like these at http://www.math.ucla.edu/~tom/ . A project in this area could use any of these examples as a starting point for further investigation.

you're planning to solve ICM?

awesome!

I bet you get some of those students turning up, and when asked about their poker playing experience they will be like "Well I played a game against my flatmates once and won it"

Lol, I love how you delegate work to students, and when they actually find an alternative to ICM you'll take the creds _cool:

Well, I have three to choose from, and there's probably more to come, so I live in hope of finding an NL1K reg.

LDO! How do you think I get my proper research done??

Now that I've calmed down, I feel able to share this hand with you.

Full Tilt No-Limit Hold'em, $0.25 BB (6 handed) - Full Tilt Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

SB ($56.12)
BB ($32.97)
UTG ($24.18)
MP ($45.89)
jbpatzer (CO) ($65.38)
Button ($25.10)

Preflop: jbpatzer is CO with A, A
2 folds, jbpatzer bets $0.80, 1 fold, SB raises to $2.50, 1 fold, jbpatzer raises to $6.40, SB calls $3.90

Flop: ($13.05) 6, 7, 6 (2 players)
SB checks, jbpatzer bets $6.50, SB raises to $16.50, jbpatzer calls $10

Turn: ($46.05) 4 (2 players)
SB checks, jbpatzer checks

River: ($46.05) K (2 players)
SB bets $33.22 (All-In), jbpatzer calls $33.22

Total pot: $112.49 | Rake: $3

Results:
SB had 2, 2 (two pair, sixes and twos).
jbpatzer had A, A (two pair, Aces and sixes).
Outcome: jbpatzer won $109.49

My Thought Processes (Big Fat Lie)
--------------------------------------------

Preflop: Bit surprised he flats my 4bet OOP. Probably has a small to medium pocket pair.
Flop: If he has 66 or 77, he probably doesn't check/raise, but anyway, I'm not folding an overpair here. If I shove, he's probably folding 88-JJ, so I flat and look to get him to bluff it off later.
Turn: Still waiting for him to bluff.
River: Thanks v much.

My Thought Processes (The Truth)
-------------------------------------------

Preflop: Oh shit! We're 200bb deep. I never know what to do this deep, and he flats my 4bet. Wtf has he got!
Flop: Aaaaaaargh! He check raised! He has 66! He has 77! He has 67! I fold. No! Wait! I have AA on a low paired board. Should I shove. Shit! Shit! Shit! Call!
Turn: Why did I call?? I'm such a wuss. Why did he check? Is he trapping me? Shit! Shit! Shit! Don't know what to do. Check!
River: Omfg! He has KK! I'm toast! Shit! Shit Shit! Omg! I have an overpair! I call. Woooooo! Hoooooo!
Had to change my underpants after this hand, but I changed them like a pro! Oh yeah baby! Like a pro! _cool:

She adds them, I take them away... it's all about keeping jb in his expectation zone. We mods do a lot of work behind the scenes on this psychomological stuff.
