I'm currently teaching bifurcation theory to my third years. This is not entirely trivial stuff. I set them a question, the first (easy) part of which involved finding the solutions of the equation y(y-1)(y-L) = 0. Here's the method a student with straight A's at 'A' level, who has made it through two and a bit years of university tackled this devilishly difficult conundrum. She multiplied it all out, noticed there was a factor of y, turned it into y times a quadratic equation, solved the quadratic equation using the formula for the solution, and presented me with a mess of symbols. I would just note that (i) my selfcontrol in these situations is the very epitome of professionalism imo, (ii) when these kids can't do the exam, it's all my fault.

sounds fine? y=0 is also a solution though that the quadratic formula wouldn't find. unless you're saying that the L is not just some constant and is in fact a variable....

I went to all the trouble of factorizing it for them so that it's completely bleeding obvious that the solutions are y=0, 1 or L. And you should be asleep getting ready to make your final table, not reading all the nonsense in my blog.......unless you want to give us some PL 5CD tips.

Last night I told mrsjb I was going to play an epic session (1.5K hands :) ), didn't watch the X Factor (so proud of myself), played until 1am, played four tables for the first time......and ended up -$50  . I bought $50 with my FPPs, so kind of break even. So what conclusions can I draw from this?

i) Playing four tables is possible for me, if I timebank a bit to avoid missing the discards.
ii) I played a bit of FL 1/2 and 3/6, and realized that I really don't like it anything like as much as PL. It now feels very restrictive not to be able to choose my bet size.
iii) Too much bluffcatching! (I'm at the top of my range here, I call to catch his bluffs! Clonk! Rinse and repeat). I'm concerned that I'm slipping back into bad habits, so my idea for tonight is to see whether I have the selfcontrol not to bluffcatch at all. I'm slightly concerned that I might be being a bit results oriented, but I definitely feel that I have a selfcontrol issue, so this will be good practice for me. (Note to self - In the AKQ game, it is unexploitable never to bluffcatch a potsized bet).
iv) I wanted to play four tables of PL 1/2, but there were only one or two running at a time, so I had to mix in some 0.5/1, which was annoying. I think I should transfer some $$$ to another network so that I have a wider range of tables to choose from.

Last night

mrsjb: Make sure you're back by 2am at the absolute latest.
number one son: OK. No problem.

This morning

Number one son appears at 7.30am. :rage:

At least it wasn't in an ambulance this time.

Kid's smart. Just approve and stay out how much he feels like it. I've tried persuading before and just nodding along and doing how you want it works better.

Parenting advice. Thanks chaps.

So, I've just shifted 500 euros to Poker Heaven. There'd better be at least one table of PL 5CD at some reasonable stakes tonight, or I will be an unhappy bunny. :f_mad:

Have you seen some running before in previous nights? Didn't even realise PH had 5CD.

Hey all 20-something poker-freaks. Lets start parenting advice thread for jbpatzer. My todays advice: I think kids should be out as long as they want, you just have to take their promises not to overdose some drugs or get into senseless violence.

I knew which side my bread was buttered on. I always tried to keep my parents happy, because that way I got an easy life. It helped that I really wanted to play cricket, and do maths at university more than anything else, and that's something it's pretty easy to get behind as a parent. I'm forever telling them how bloody easy they had it (and I'm an only child, which, before you tell me, does, I know, explain a lot).

Apparently on Poker Heaven, everyone plays 7-A 5CD, which is 5CD with the 2,3,4,5 and 6s removed from the deck. God knows how to play that. And the PokerHands HUD doesn't work on this network. Maybe I should have thought this one through a bit more carefully. On the bright side, I did play about 10 hands of 50c/$1 at the one table that was briefly running (and it's always 5 handed, which is also a bit different) and it did seem as soft as shit. If a couple of people are calling with any pair, they might as well just hand over all their money and go and do something else, because at least that way they save some time.

I was just singing so loudly in my fake Irish accent to the singing of my least favourite contestant on the X Factor that mrsjb threw the remote control at me, claiming that she was aiming for my ample stomach, but actually catching me squarely in the groin. Now is that love? Is it?

I'd forgotten how much I like Squeeze. :f_love:

Had a nice winning session tonight, and even managed to play a table on Poker Heaven for a little while, but only at 50c/$1. I say a little while, because I kept timing out, being unable to see what was going on, and generally getting software rage because it's so much worse than stars. It didn't stop them donating some money to me, but I have serious doubts that I'm going to be able to play three stars tables and one PH table. Maybe I'll get used to it. I get a 1000 euro bonus to clear, so it would be a shame not to put at least some sort of dent into that.

Don't forget you can also play NLHE on PokerHeaven. There is no need to go 5CD FullTimePro.

Whenever you feel like playing 5CD on Stars, do it. Other than that just pwn the 5handed games on PH _cool:

Even though you worked quite a bit on a prof attitude and mindset, it still helps a lot to escape to another site / another game once in a while when things are not going your way in your main game (which should still be NLHE SH, at least till we finished our small project V1; then ofc you can switch to madpotting :f_grin: )
