or he doesn't want to look like a sucker in the group so he drinks with them
I know I drink to blot out the crushing existential angst of middle age. The fear of death. The feeling that your kids are growing up in a dangerous and uncertain world. The certainty that your life is empty and meaningless, and you live in a sea of chaos, pain and irrationality. And if you drink enough, you end up doing funny stuff like falling over, and you can, like, have a laugh with your mates, and its, like really cool. And stuff.

Here's how I'm doing on the $6.50s so far. Would look nicer without my initial set of six, but I can't complain.

It's taking me a while to get used to playing these again, but I much prefer the FT blind structure to the stars structure. And I've never sat down to grind at such a high buy-in before (I know that sounds stupid, but it's true!). When I open up a set of six (hope to increase this soon), I have a slight panic and think, aaaargh, that's about £25 I just invested, before I remind myself that it's poker money, not real money, and calm down again. I then think, 'god, look at all those other people! How am I going to get all those chips?'. Then I start, and it all settles down. Presumably I'll get used to this. Actually, whenever I sit down at the chessboard I have similar 'how on earth am I going to win' feelings before I start, so I suppose it's just in my nature.
Family driving me insane at the moment (hence the previous post I suspect). Currently, only poker is able to distract me.
Looking forward to playing Step 1 turbos once I accumulate enough FTPA points and FTPs. FTPA challenges are great. You just play you normal game and they end up done. I'm doing 'Mastering the Bubble' over and over (you can do it 10 times) at the moment, which is quite easy, except that you have to play 4 HU SnGs as well to complete it. My HU strategy is pretty random, but I reckon I roughly break even on the $0.95 + 0.05 super turbos (big spender!).

its all about setting. its not the drink itself that causes shame, its the glaring eyes of your parents , lol.whereas if your sitting there with a bottle of (insert your fave here) with 5 friends, all of a sudden its acceptable.
I have a feeling that drinking 1L of vodka is going to cause a LOT of shame, regardless of the setting. Not speaking from personal experience here, of course..
edit: Good luck on the Turbo 9-mans jb! Looks like a decent start.
1 l of vodka could kill you, if you drank it fast + depends on your body structure etc.
Hey jb, nice blog, you definitely sound like a man I would like to have a pint with, its a shame you're in Nottingham. Best luck with family and son #1, btw how old is he? I reckon kids always find their way in this world, as we all did at our time (though when my grandma asks me if I still play cards I say "oh no, I listened to you and understood how dangerous that is and now I'm off them completely lol).
If you ever come to london it will be nice to talk some poker shit, same if I come to Notingham (not too likely tbh, but who konws)

I love the way this conversation is developing as if one of us is really likely to do it. Mind you.......

I never said that I was in Nottingham. And number one son is 16 in February. And my grandma taught me how to play cards. And yes you should come to Dusk Till Dawn one night. And btw, trip to DTD is planned for next Wednesday 20th if anyone wants to meet up (nibbana? you know you want to!). It's a £20 night out.

This isn't a brag, it wasn't big and wasn't clever... but when my mum went away when I was 16 me and a friend of mine actually did this every night for a week. That is, necking a pint of vodka followed by a pint of orange juice. Makes me feel so stupid when I read this story but hey we had "a laugh".

Strangely impressive. You and my son would get on!

don't you mean a £20 hangover? ♦
If you want a hangover as well, it's a £40+ night out at DTD prices!
Sorry somehow along the way I got an impression you might be from there. Anyway, I'm in london, and if DTD is within reachable limits (note I would have to go home after everything, or should have to lol), definitely will join you.
ps now I see DTD is in nottingham, that's where this place is coming to! Turns out I actually remember something, its just I can't remember what I remember lol
Chess again tonight.

I'm black. My opponent chose the less than impressive f4 here.
Can you spot the refutation?
If only it was always this easy. Kind of disappointing though.
Didn't run so hot tonight, and my BR is back where it started. Have PT3 instead of HEM, so the best I can do is....

And this doesn't even capture the number of times I pushed AJ into AK, 44 into 99, etc. It's the nature of the beast I guess, so BR management comes to my rescue, plus some rakeback on Friday. I'll also play a little mouthful of Rush every day from Friday to get that $25 Take 2 bonus.
This reminds me that the last time there was a Take 2 bonus, it was a much more significant addition to my BR. Unfortunately, it appeared in my account whilst I was away at a Maths Study Group (don't ask), which involved drinking a large volume of beer every evening. Sadly, I had internet in my room, and when I went back there one night, my alcohol-fuelled logic ran something along the lines of '$25, woo hoo! hic! let's play an MTT! I feel goooood!'. So I registered for a FL MTT by mistake. It took me about 10 hands even to work out why everyone was minraising. Got bored very quickly and went to bed. How do you bet someone off a hand in FL anyway? Particularly when you're drunk? I don't know. All very mysterious. And Waiboy seems so normal. Sort of. At least I've learnt my lesson - Never play fixed limit Hold'Em!
Can you spot the refutation?
"Yeah,...F4, take that eh? Nice - kick your pesky knight away...
Oh.
That was an open file.
Shit.
Can you spot the refutation?
'' The obvious Nc3 loses a pawn to Bxe5, so first I must play... ''

I think you're getting f4 and c5 confused. Feeling rusty? ♠_evil:
