I  Rush! Finally, a format that fits my attention span. Including rakeback (which you have to I think for all the reasons discussed earlier), that's +$145 for the month over 36K hands = 4bb/100 hands. (Although HEM tells me that one standard deviation over 36K hands is about $140, so who knows what my real win rate is!). Looking at the graph, it's 0bb/100 hands over the first 18K hands and 8bb/100 hands over the second 18K hands, so maybe there's hope for me yet! And I got silver ironman again, as well as generating at least 1 FTP per day, so that's two freerolls for me to play on March 12th. And there's the Durrrr Challenge. I'm such a sucker for these silly FT promotions.

And more than three weeks of free Cardrunners! _cool:

It was disappointing to only have one coaching session with TT during the month, but it really is rather tricky for us to find the right time (particularly when I schedule a coaching for number one son's 16th birthday! Doh! :f_o: ). It helped me a lot though, and I recorded the audio and listened to it in the car on the way to work a couple of times as I am both very keen and deeply sad. The book is progressing slowly as well, and we are both pretty happy with what we have so far, although there's a long way to go yet.

I have high hopes that I can carry on improving in March, and maybe even move up in April. My starting $250, after being decimated by my dismal failure in January, is now back where it started, and I have $420 of my BR on Neteller, so it's definitely a possibility if TT thinks my game is up to it.

I actually read some of the PS strategy articles today. For some reason, I'd never thought of doing this before, and they are really rather good, so I will try to read the rest over the next month.

I didn't feel too big of a difference between NL10 and NL25. But it took me some time to get the betsizing remotely right. I still make a lot of mistakes there imo. But since you are a Maths prof you should have no problem there, right? :f_grin:

LE: I hope you just crush in the first part of March and you just won't need the add-on to your BR to go up. Play the SM on 6th March with your extra BR. _biggrin:

I've been listening to the soundtrack from the 'Tolerance' videos from DC in the car on the way to work. Variance really is a frightening beast, even if you do understand the Central Limit Theorem, and that's what this video is about. Would Newton have thought of gravity as an explanation for planetary motion if apples were to fall downwards with an acceleration chosen from a normal distribution with mean 9.81 m/s/s and standard deviation 5 m/s/s? I think not! Learning is more profitable than winning, which is good as I'm certainly better at the former than the latter (apart from learning not to make spewy three barrels bluffs and silly river calls obv).

Had another coaching session with TT today where he reviewed a video of me playing. He has switched from 'Why do you bet so f**king big?' to 'Why do you bet so f**king small?'. His advice to cbet smaller has been filtered by my brain into value betting too small on the turn.

Here's a hand where I didn't value bet too small on the turn, and when Villain's hand appeared, TT almost literally fell off his chair. At least there was a considerable amount of noise through my headphones. I hope you enjoy the standard of play on Rush NL10 as much as we did. :f_biggrin:

He probably put you on AK. Everyone puts everyone on AK on NL10

Having watched those 'Tolerance' videos, I was struck by the difference between the pre/postgame routines of me and the guy who made the videos (forget his name). He said he goes off for a little walk in the morning before playing, stops at a coffee shop for some green tea, has a low carb meal (whatever that is), meditates for 10 minutes, writes out his goals for the session, plays, does his post session review, and presumably then goes off to rescue some lost kittens or found an orphanage. (Although he does seem like a nice chap.)

Here was my routine tonight. Come home from work, find mrsjb has invited a friend and her kids over. Try to ignore all the screaming. Wait for them to go. Tell off number two son for being an arsehole. Put daughter in shower. Eat really big plate of fish fingers, chips and beans (presumably this must be 'high carb', since it tasted nice), read daughter story and put her to bed. Settle down to write snotty letter to the council complaining. Get asked to go lock up the chickens and guinea pigs (for this I get a nice cup of tea, brown not green), sit down in front of computer again. Get bored with letter. Skype. Blog. Once I've finished my letter, I will play.

BUT I WILL STILL GO CRUSH NL10!!!!

Sorry. Feeling slightly hysterical tonight.

I'm pretty certain that fish fingers technically don't qualify as food so the level of carbality (tm) is pretty much a moot point.

In all seriousness, you should both include your best blog posts in the book. Use them as ways of reinforcing important lessons, or just for laughs as required.

I think TT fixed a huge leak in my game today. There's one silly, spewy call where he obviously had a set (pretty obvious in the graph) and a couple of rivered gutshots at the end, but basically I bet big on the turn when I made a hand and, abracadabra, profit! Even my red line is going up, presumably because they're folding to my big bets on the turn if they have no hand. :f_love:

Chess tonight. Just not enough room in my brain for chess and poker at the same time. Got to the position below, and instead of grabbing the g pawn and hoping for the best, I played f3 and offered a draw, which was rapidly accepted. Such a patzer!

I've decided I will give up chess at the end of the season to concentrate on poker.

Moving Pictures by Rush is one of my favourite albums, and I realized today that I had forgotten to commemorate the 30th anniversary of its release by about two weeks. It was also the first album I ever bought for myself (I was 14!). I listened to it in the car today, and when I came to this track (Wooooo! Geek rock! I'm hairy, I have spots, I smell a bit, my social skills are nonexistent, but I don't care, because I have Rush!)

I realized that there's a point in it at which my original vinyl (Now living in a box in the loft. Mrsjb likes Rush about as much as I like Justin Bieber) had a scratch, and it jumped a bit, and now, whenever I listen to it, I expect to hear it jump, even when they play it live. I have conditioned myself to expect this. If you were to give me a Double Decker at the exact moment of the fire alarm test every Wednesday morning, I could probably be trained to salivate whenever I hear a siren. My point is that I am a creature of habit, as we probably all are to some extent, and that this can be either good or bad for your poker (Aha! We reach the point at last!). Bad habits are bad (Just because that fish check/raises the turn doesn't mean he necessarily has the nuts.), good habits are good (UTG bets, UTG+1 3bets, I fold my Q9o), but thinking carefully about every decision is better than both. This applies to poker, chess and maths.

I'm off to have a Double Decker and shove AI over the fish's check/raise.

TT wants me to try NL25 at our next coaching session. Ooo errr!

Hey,

just stumbled across your blog and must say I just love it. Inspiring read overall- keep it up pls :)

Also like to meet more and more people w/ a chess background as I feel the skill sets required are pretty similar in both "sports". Regarding the position u posted, Im quite certain "grabbing" the g-pawn is quite bad, although im greedy myself mostly :f_biggrin:

After 1.Rhg8 Qh6, Rg6 and doubling the rooks on the g-line (is that correct chess-terminilogy? pretty rusty with the jargon^^) the rest of the game will be pure agony for u. Other than that, the initial position is quite lame ;)

Cheers

You're probably right. That's certainly what I thought during the game. I could have done it earlier after swapping a pair of rooks, which wouldn't have been so bad. I beat him with black two weeks ago. :f_mad:

Glad you like the blog.
