[Closed] Money, My Mouse and Virtual Felt.

Today was another pretty dull day in my little world, I knocked off a session from the 4 that I usually play to go relax and just chill out watching TV etc. This I see as limiting my swing, I'm not in anyway tilting, just feeling jaded by the fact I should be back at NL10 right now and fighting for gold VIP next month at Stars, which if this turns around who knows may still be achievable.

Typing Jaded made me think of this quality tune by Aerosmith. Enjoy if you like this type of thing.

Anyway the first two session I was down again by $12.97 across the two which is only 2.5BI's so not that bad and then the last session I actually managed a tiny profit of $5.77 plus I unlocked $10 due to a stellar reward (only one more $10 one then it's the $50 one's).
This now leaves my BR at the sum of $218.77, and I resisting the temptation to deposit cash to make up for the losses I've faced.

In my session where I was in the positive I was up about $14 and just closing the tables when I got screwed again flopping top two and then getting AI on the turn and he flipped over a nice GS draw that obviously made it on the river. I wouldn't of minded quite so much but the board had 3 cards to a flush as well and he didn't even have a card of that suit, neither did I mind you, but the way he was playing I knew he didn't have the flush already.
Also managed to get allin on a J high flop with A,J for my opponent to flip pocket 10's, guess the river! Yep a goddamn ten.

So things are still pretty sick for me right now, but at least I've ended my 5 session losing streak, always a silver lining I suppose lol. Plus, the bad beats are no where near as awful as they have been so I am now hoping that the god variance has decided to stop torturing me and allow me to win when I get it in ahead, but hey again I won't hold my breath.

I did make a couple of minor adjustments today whilst playing, basically increased the pressure on my oppoents and took down a few extra pots before SD. Some I knwo I was behind and some I knew I was ahead but didn't fancy tempting fate much at this point in my poker life.

Now after 57.5k hands at NL5 I am only up $158.12 with an extremely poor BB/100 of just 5.51BB/100. Pretty damn low in my opinion at the micro's but I guess it could be worse and I am still running an average BB/100 even during this down time.

If the strategy points update on time tomorrow, I'll be flashing my new bling around the forum also as I only had to get 47.5 points this morning and that should be more than done. Better than that though I get to go read through the gold articles and refresh myself on those and hopefully pick up a few things that I may be missing in my game right now. With current volume of hands played I should also crack the 100,000 hands mark tomorrow, which is a small achievement as well I guess. Anyway that's about all I hope to bring a bit more of a positive vibe to this place tomorrow, and will try my hardest to make it that way.

This game at NL5 is really taking the piss now, I started my first session and everything was going great I must of been up about $10 for a while then sure enough the fucking idiots once again start drawing out on me with trash hands... I mean seriously A heavily 4-bet pot and they shove all in with fucking A,7os and manage to catch cards they need to win the hand, How can I complete against that? Not to mention my favourite of the day so far, 3 bet pot flop come 7 high and I lead oyut with my pocket aces, I bet heavily all the way to the way through the hand and I'm all in on the river he calls and caught a Q on the river to make him two-pair Q,7os in a 3-bet pot is obviously the nuts!

Yes I guess that is very true, and puts a different view on it :P. In a way I am still running from my starting capital even if I have withdrawn and re-deposited. That was just a random rant I guess and I only played one session yesterday, and only played about 200 hands today cash which I did actually win a BI! and also got my queens outdrawn by J,5os, which was nice for a full stack.

I also played a few $2 HU SnG's with a win ratio of 6 - 2 although one of the losses I just ended up shoving every hand as the dude was quite annoying after 100 hands he had a PRF of 0... I mean wtf is that all about? Lol. How can you play HU and never raise? It obviously meant that I'd hit top pair or something andhe'd call me down with pocket Aces for example. Yeah he was weird to say the least and I never want to play him again EVER! The other loss was a pretty harsh top two pair against a turned wheel straight.

I'm thinking of completely disregarding all of my poker knowledge and playing strictly to the first starting hand chart while I'm playing the micro's and see if that improves my play any. Although as it's not really a play problem more of a donkey's suck out on me problem I'm not sure this is a wise move.

I am still feeling a bit reluctent to open cash tables being completely honest, but I know I have to keep playing for as long as I am not making fatal errors in judgement and just wait for it to turn around.

I'm also severely tempted to just go sit in at the NL25 tables, not because they will respect my aises, but because I'm more aware of what I am losing there and I focus a lot more. But I doubt I will, scared money and all that jazz.

Poker has me a bit down in the dumps, and although I had a moderate success today, I still have a few reservations that I'm even good enough to beat the micro's now. I mean seriously I have played almost 100,000 hands and I'm at NL5 that's got to be almost unheard of when trying to build a roll. But if I think of the battering I've taken for the last week or however long it's been I've been moaning about it then I guess it could be a lot worse. My EV line is now double what my profit line is and this doesn't even account for the times I've played a hand not expecting someone to have two pair with a random hand like 5,9os.

Anyway, I think I'll have to stop the mass mutli-tabling for now, because if I can't win getting it all in with the best, I'm going to have to try outplaying people and getting my red line up. It's the only thing I can really think of doing besides moving up or going insane. To gain a decent level of focus I think will require me to play only 4 tables, I just hope it doesn't see me getting bored and making silly moves, because I don't think my bankroll will handle a swing and bad play. And I will never ever play NL2 again (unless I am adjusting my HUD that is).

I also deposited £20 today to pay for some of my losses, I don't know why really, maybe for the physchological boost looking at my cashier, or maybe cos I had nothing else to spend it on. Either way it's there and after adding that and my daily activities my BR stands at the huge sum of.... $243.03 Across two sites ♦

Anyway, lots of maybes and might do's in this post, think I'll give myself a break until I come up with a few definately's. As the only one I have now is that I hate the micro's and could quite happily never play them again.

Today I am shocked myself at the news I bring, I think everybody who reads this blog may of seen this coming and I'm almost reluctant to carry on typing, the events of yesterday really changed a couple of things. So I have to tell you that after much deliberation and disbelief, that I am in fact not only in profit but started playing NL10 again also. ♦

The funny part is the day my luck turned around is the day I feel I played like crap making a few dodgy calls and betting out at the wrong time were fully enforced. But the god of variance decided I'd been hammered enough and decided to award me with some of that elusive EV back. You know those donkeys that always seem to pick up a hand when you get a a nice holding and think ah well it's only that tosser, I'm more than likely ahead.

Well that was my thought's on this 37/30 donkey, who was defending his blind each time I attempted to steal it. Funny thing is in that brief moment between him calling and flipping up the cards I was thinking "YES, about time I got him with a decent hand"... My plan was to shove if he 3-bet defended again anyway just due to the way he was playing (which I wouldn't of noticed if I was playing 20+ tables I admit)

That was a nice $19 back in EV, and I felt not one ounce of remorse after the crap I've had to deal with lately. I even let out a little fist pump with this epic suckout... And why not, they have been doing to me plaenty.

Today when I hit the tables I'll be trying a lot harder to remain focused on what I am doing and hopefully I'm past the worst of my bad luck at least till next time.

After yesterdays post of maybe's and might do's I've decided that I really do need to enforce some kind of goals that I stick too. I've got a few in mind but want to narrow it down slightly and make them more relistic than my usual ones, that way I may actually achieve them instead of changing them when I realise they are not yet possible.

I also entered the BLT at FT yesterday (the best donkfest I've seen) with 3 minute blinds and a huge number of entrants it's by far the most donk-tastic MTT ever to be held, but I quite enjoyed watching the all-in action unfold and saw it as a bit of fun more than something to concentrate on.
I also had a last longer bet on which I lost for the cost of the Buy-in, but never mind, not like I do it often. And it helped a mate who is struggling with variance himself.

Also, real life variance took it's toll on my dad yesterday when he recieved the news that his 41 year-old brother has an in-operable tumor and the kemotherapy had little or no effect. Although I've only met him twice and can't really say I know him well enough to let it affect me seriously, I know that out of all my father's family this is the one person that he holds in very regard and I feel for him at this sad time. I also wonder how this news must be affecting his three children and his loving wife, and my thoughts go out to them. He is going for an operation but this is only to by-pass the tumor as they say it cannot be removed, so it will only be a matter of time before my dad has to attend yet another family funeral.

On a bit of a lighter note, my mother backed her car into someone elses car creating a nice dent in the tailgate, which just screams for female driver joke in my opinion.

I think that should cover it...

Anyway, I have wondered miles from the beaten track and it's time to return myself to thinking about poker! Athough now I come to think of it I don't really have a lot to add so I'll just total my Bankroll and post it... $266.62... Devilish...

I thought I'd make this post while I actually had a day in profit because I have come to realise I do a lot of moaning in this blog! I'm going to try not to! ♦

Well this is my 100,000 hand update and also timed nicely with my status just updating to gold (eventually)!

Its a shame that I have to make this review on the back of a losing session, but in all fairness it just wasnt happening, I won a few minor pots and lost a few big ones and sometimes its just the way it goes I guess. And you dont expect your opponent to have quads when you are sat with QQQ77 with two Qs as hole cards. I also lost a quarter stack talking to someone at the tables and pressing the return key at exactly the wrong time (and due to using TN) throwing a bet of $2.78 into a pot that I was clearly behind with, he then raised all-in for a further 31c and I thought as I had pocket J`s they were worth the extra 31c just incase. The other 3 quarters of a stack was just absolute poor play on my part, and I think I really need to focus somemore to return to playing my A-game again.
I dont know if it`s just a knock-on effect from the recent run of bad luck, but whatever it is, now I am past the awful suckouts and playing bad now is the worst thing that I can doing as it`s this period that I need to rebuild before the next bout of variance.

Anyway, 100k hands played and I guess it`s high time for a few stats and graphs to see exactly how I`ve done (not well imo). I am excusing myself slightly though due to the prolonged period I was away from the felt. Okay here goes....

As you can see Im also catching up with my EV again so I have no excuses for not doing much much better than I have across 100k hands. I would of liked to beat NL5 with a much more confident winrate than I have (although I am still playing, so who knows). And 37k hand of NL10 should most certainly show a profit (although it was $20 better before the last session ♦). And yes I was sad enough to to sit out of my last session at exactly 100k hands :P.

Across my 100k sample I am obviously playing to tight and I am in the process of rectifing this at the moment as I see this as a major leak, I also feel I am not 3-betting enough as my 3-bet range usually includes only QQ+ and AK and I am slowly working on this also against certain opponents. My aggression and willingness to call down donkeys is also costing me big time and is currently (I feel) my biggest leak that needs a lot of improvement.

Supernova on Pokerstars (274 VPPs per day)

I would love to try out for Supernova elite but I cant imagine myself having the $2,500 - $3,000 bankroll to earn the 2,740 VPPs per day to achieve this feat. I know its obtainable at NL100 and if I somehow managed to acheive that roll by January the 1st, I would become dedicated to getting SNE status. Playing Breakeven and hitting SNE would give you roughly a yearly profit of $100,000 - $140,000 including tournament entries etc. So that would be motivation enough for me!

Anyway, time to wrap up and I feel I have many leaks that I need to hurry and get a grip of, plus more thinking with my head and less calling because they are donkeys because as I mentioned its costing me dear.

Ive started playing 16 tables at FT with 4 tables of NL10 and the rest NL5 and intend to do this until I reach $300, then Ill add two more NL10 table and then an additional 2 every $20 after that. If I drop to $250 Ill drop two NL10s and if I drop to $230 I will play only NL5 until $250 again. I also play NL10 x 4 only as my warm-up session (first of the day) for around 300 - 500 hands (however many fit into the hour). These rules are what Ill be sticking to from now on, with no deviations, if I need to build a roll I need clear rules. So I must stick to these! Obv I will play less tables some days if my game is off also.

As you well know I need to learn to play the low Aces

Yeah I know 16 tables is a lot, but is feeling a bit slow if I am honest moving from 24 tables at stars. I keep saying I wont MT but I cant help myself, at least at the micros it makes my laydowns much easier and my rakeback (VPPs) a lot higher.

As for SNE, there is no way I will reach the target BR to even think of that by the the 1st of January, and I am probably just still running off my starting capital if you count the withdrawls I made when SSS`ing. Although I did build a BR inbetween but used it all on a trip to LOndon to play at the International and stay with a friend who I hadnt seen for a while. Not sure its worth withdrawing though TBH, I just want away from NL10 and any little booster is more than welcome.

Also, saw your thread on Check/calling the river and seems Ive sprung a leak I didnt even think to look for! So one more thing to work on.

Cheers for stopping by people, and Mr Fin, thanks for the kind wishes but as of yesterday I am now once again back at NL5 when mass tabling. I do still play 4 x tables of NL10 if I only have four open, but as I start getting bored I close them and open up the NL5 tables.

Anyway, this was just a quick update to say BR = $228.13, yep I had a nice loss of $60 yesterday. I lost $20 on suckouts (all in EV), $20 having a break from BSS and trying my hand at SSS again (more details later) and the other $20 I just played certain situations very poorly and twice I had my Aces outdrawn (which sucked) Once by JJ (all in pre) and the board came 8,9,T no prozes for guessing the turn...
Then I had AA and was in a CO vs Bu (me) situation. Perfect right? Yep, the flop brought Q high and CO led into me, I re-raised and he called. Checked the turn to me I raised for half my remianing stack $4 and he called, the river made a goddamn 5 card straight on the board and he bet all in.. I called and we split the pot, he had A,Q... Wasn't to impressed losing money on a hand where I was ahead. Okay only 41c lost but really it was about $10 that should of been in my stack, which would of at least made the days losses a little easier to bear. But never mind, I'm at least getting used to it now, so that's one thing

Well today's sessions I played excellent (if I do say so myself)... However, it was time for me to have an unlucky day.... AGAIN, wasn't that tragic because I had some really nice hands inbetween, but still if luck had been on my side today I'd of been back at NL10 very shortly.

At the time he shoved I was an 89% favourite, so I guess that just pissed me off a little and caused my bad judgement on the other hand. Oh well such is the game we play.

Anyway closing balance is a disappointing $225.16. I'm actually starting to wonder if I will ever get through the micro's now, let alone have a shot at supernova next year. I must be taking longer than joe average to get through, and although I have been quite unlucky on some occasions, I can't help feeling there is something horribly wrong with my game.

Ah well, I'll just keep playing and hope the elusive heater is just around the corner to give me the much needed boost to both my bankroll and my confidence levels. I'll post a few of the decent hands from today as well before I log off and sleep.

Sigh... this continues.... I have big pockets they have set, I have QQ they have KK I have KK they have AA... Doing my tits in. I work my way into profit again and te shit storm kicks up in my face and knocks me back down... It's all very well saying long-term blah blah, but that doesn't help much when I get get out of bloody NL5.

Anyway BR $215. I am starting to not enjoy this game anymore.

I'm giving up playing like a nit and will now be following the guide to the micro's from the 2+2 forums in the hope that I may actually get somewhere with this game. It's going to take a lot of adjustment and weeding out of my obviously ingrained habits.
For example the opening range from UTG - My current range is AQs+ and 77+, this now must change to 22+, AJ+, ATs+, KJs+, KQo. So as you can see that's a major opening up and I'll be playing 11.3% of hands from UTG, that's actually more than I am playing overall right now. So massive changes.

I'm going to give up all my statuses (Gold on pokerstrategy - Ironman FT and Silver VIP on pokerstars) to learn this new TAG style. I'm going to start with just one table open to adjust myself to these new ranges and following the guide, I can't do any worse than I am now, my current style is obviously not going to pull me out the other side of the micro's. Once I get a bit more comfortable with the complete overhaul of my game I'll add one table at a time. No more 16 - 24 mass multi-tabling sessions to grind out required points for VIP levels etc.

I'm going to spend today just putting all the pieces of the TAG style together, making notes and then tonight I will sit and play my first session. I'm also going to write off all the previous hands setting my filter to "Since 21st August 2010 12:00pm" to ensure that my stats are roughly where they should be according to the ranges outlined on 2+2.

Thought she might help brighten the place up a bit.

Plans and Goals

Goals to complete

[ ] Play a minimum of 750 hands with one table open to practice new opening ranges.
[ ] Reach a point being comfortable with 4 tables following new strategy.
[ ] Reach 25 Buy-Ins for NL25.
[ ] Learn the rules for Badugi as it's the only form of poker I don't know how to play.

Ongoing Goals

Spend one hour daily reviewing articles and notes made from articles.
Start playing a few more MTT's, using points and freeroll's then progress to $ entries.
Review every hand that involved 5BB's or more after every session.
Post one hand daily in the hand evaluation forum (more if required).
Maintain blog daily - minimum.
Every 1,000 hands check that all my stats are close to a standard TAG player. (2% - 3% either way)
Stick to the 25 Buy-In BRM rule.

Leak prevention

1) Do not play when feeling tired.
2) I must not berate the table donkeys and fish, as they often end up leaving.
3) I will not open my range against maniacs.
4) I will take a break at least once per hour for 10 minutes or more.
5) Stop browsing the internet whilst playing and/or allowing other distractions.
6) No continuation bets without at the very least a good draw.
7) Start enjoying poker again.

Overview

I feel it's time to really dig in and get some form of consistent play that works. Obviously my last attempt has many flaws and to do this I feel I need to set out a plan of action and stick to it, or I am never going to get anywhere. As my old boss used to say "Prior planning prevents piss poor performance" or the 6 P's for short. So here it is, if I can't stick to this then I don't think I can really ever play poker as more than hobby and a bit of fun, and being honest if I do reach that point I doubt poker will feature in my life much if at all.

My overall goal is still to reach a level where I can turn pro, although at the moment I feel the further from this than at any other time in my poker history (I wanted to say career but it's hardly that). I would now find it hard to say truthfully that I am a winning poker player over the long-term. Breakeven maybe. Slightly losing - most probably. I need to change that, and I need to be ahead on profitable play and not grinding out rakeback and bonuses.

I was going to open up a new blog to track this new approach but as I already have around 4 on this site alone, I decided that this one will have to do even if the first four pages are just filled with my nitty mentality and getting outdrawn. I guess when you only play premium hands then only your premium hands can be beaten, making all your beats looking worse than what they actually are.

Anyway this blog post is already a lot longer than I intended and all this thinking and typing is keeping me away from hopefully perfecting my new approach.

Oh yeah and I forgot to add that as the guide is focused on 6-handed play, that's also what I'll be playing for now. Fancy forgetting one of the biggest changes.
