Hey guys,

hope everyone is doing fine these days.

I would like to start a blog here for the following reasons:

  • Get in contact with the community, exchange views and in best case find a poker mentor, who I can ask shit :)
  • Learn stuff about poker.
  • Chit chat about my poker challenges and - if there is mutual interest - real life challenges. And hopefully keep track of progress.

Background

I'm 34 years old and feel like a hundred while writing this. I've played poker seriously during my time at the University (between 21-26 maybe) and it went pretty well back then. Basically, poker provided a University life I otherwise would have never had if I needed to have a normal part time job to finance my studies. Then, after the studies, I slipped immediately into a job and simultaneously started my own business along the way and so real life kicked in hard. Since then, I haven't played much nor studied at all - poker just wasn't on my mind anymore.

Fast forward 8 years. 8 fucking years... fuck me.

Yesterday I was sitting in homeoffice like most people nowadays during Corona times and had cabin fever again. Then I stumbled across Lex Veldhuis' Twitch Channel and saw his run in the SCOOP Main Event. I immediately got hooked and cashed in 10 bucks on Stars to play around at NL2 while watching.

Man, I haven't played poker in ages :f_drink:

It was so much fun, but I realized two things. First, I played NL and it felt I sometimes know why I was betting instead of checking and folding instead of calling. That was a nice feeling, but I would love to know that in more than every other hand :f_biggrin:
Secondly, I then played some PLO and had basically no fucking clue what I was doing, just randomly clicking buttons when the 4 cards looked beautifully connected to each other :f_grin:

In case, you are wondering about the results:
NL2 | 500 hands | +3,5bb | was up a stack and lost a big mean hand, will probably post it later when I find out how to do that properly to see if I fucked that one up
PLO2 | 506 hands | +94,5bb | that was just luck, no idea how that went

So, as mentioned I would love to play a little more poker now and connect with the community again. I hope, that will help me learn some things and I think it also makes much more fun than going alone.

Other interests of mine, besides poker:

  • Business | i think i crossed the mount stupid and know i see how much there is to learn
  • Personal Development | lifelong challenge for me, architect personality type
  • Climbing (Indoor, Rock, Mountaineering) | Beginner, but i fucking love the mountains so hard, i could cry whenever i see one
  • Running | i can run a half marathon (~1h45min) and got injured while training for marathon this year - and i hate myseld for that
  • F1 | been watching it since the early 90s and know stuff

If there is something for you here, I would love it if you leave a comment or two :) I'm really looking forward to this.

I don't have any specific poker goals besides learning, connecting and hopefully finding a mentor. But I'm a big believer in goal setting, so that might come later.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read my blog.

Cheers,
Kev

Thanks for reading and thanks for your comment. That makes me feel a little better :f_thumbsup:

I guess you are as old as you feel, but that's easier said than done.

Maybe let's call it "wiser", not "older" :f_biggrin:

Indeed, I can confirm that there are quite a few people in this community who are older than you.
(I'm not one of them, I'm 31.)

"Architect personality type" would be INTJ, right? I'm ISFP, so I'm pretty sure your personality is more suited to poker than mine. :f_grin:

I used to love F1 racing back in the 90's and early 2K's, when Schumacher had those epic duels with Damon Hill, and later Villeneuve and Häkkinen, but I've kinda gotten out of it after that. In fact, I hardly follow professional sports all that much at all anymore, even though I'm still a lot into doing sports. Of course, my usually busy schedule of organized sports has been put on halt during the quarantine too, but at least you've reminded me that I should get back into the non-organized ones like running, which I have been neglecting as well during these times.

Unfortunately, I won't be much help as a poker mentor, since I have moved on from Hold'em and Omaha to other poker versions, so I can only wish you best of luck. :f_drink:

Great to have you back and I'll be following your blog...

Best of luck :gl:,

Oh wow, thank you so much for reading and commenting. Haha, alright, the Adventurer type it is :) That's awesome mate. I guess, we are one of the most different personality types of all of them, but neverless I always admire the lifestyle of the Explorers and wish I would be more like them. Everything has it's advantages and disadvantages :)

Nice to hear, that you watched F1 in the 90s. I guess the 80s and 90s were the heydays of F1, but I think they are going back in a right direction now - of course, very slowly :( I watched F1 from the early 90s on. Senna was my childhood hero. Good old times :) Still remember various races from that time. The last 10 years, I don't remember anything :f_biggrin:

Regarding poker, what games do you play? The last years of my poker life I almost exclusively played Mixed Games on Stars. In my opinion, that's the ultimate pinnacle of poker, to be able to play all the games well.
In the last couple of years, I also played in a very funny home game were we played all kinds of stupid variants :f_biggrin: great fun :f_drink: We've made our own plaques and played Dealers Choice in the end.

I'm going to look for some pictures of that, maybe there is something I can share :f_biggrin:

Have a nice evening Harrier. Cheers

@VorpalF2F

Man :f_biggrin: Thank you so much for that clip. I forgot about that one for a couple of years.

Probably the best poker clip of all time together with the famous Hellmuth "Northern Europe" or Tony G "On your Bike" clips :f_biggrin:
I especially love it because you clearly see that he did that on purpose and not because he is and old man who doesn't get it. He really wants it to look like he almost folds, so good :f_biggrin::f_biggrin:

All time classic, love it :f_love:

Now I have to find the Tony G and Phil Hellmuth clips.
I'm pretty sure I recognize "on your bike" though, so I probably saw that one before.

I think my personal all-time favorite is still Phil Hellmuth's "run it four times" backfiring on him:

Funny that you mention mixed games, because that's exactly what I'm playing right now. Currently it's Badugi, Five Card Draw and 2-7 Triple Draw, exclusively tournaments at the moment. I started a blog about it just the other day, feel free to check it out if you want to follow along and/or if you like cocktails.

omg, that clip is soo good.

I like especially two parts. The one where Phil Hellmuth says "You know what Phil Laak..." (love it that he uses his full name :f_biggrin:) and then the one where Tony G says to Phil Hellmuth "But... the hand... you are a professional..." :f_biggrin::f_biggrin:

Thanks for sharing your blog, I will definitely come by.

Alrighty then... let's do a first Poker update since the start of the blog.

This week I played 3k hands each NL2 and PLO2. Running pretty well, but I also think the player pool is super weak. Out of 12 sessions I won in 10 of them. I'm pretty sure I can manage a winrate of 20bb+/100 hands and then move up to NL5/PLO5 as soon as I have the roll for that. Then, there will of course be some major differences in skill and I forecast a big skill jump from NL2 to NL5 for example.

Anyhow, here are the results of week 1:
NL2 | 3.079 hands | +$23.19
PLO2 | 3.053 hands | +$18.80

I will update the cumulative results in the 2nd post of the first site every week to have a good overview.

I will also look at some hands and post them in the hand discussion forum with a link here as well.

Two questions for the readers:

1. What topic/video/"thing" would you suggest to start the learning process in my case after a lot of years not playing?
(I like to learn very structured and systematically and have no issue to start at the very bottom or with the basics, just have no clue where to start).

2. When would you suggest moving up to NL5/PLO5, how many stacks would you like to have for those limits?
(I like to be conservative with my bankroll management, I easily get tilted when I loose a big chunk of my roll).

Thank you very much for reading and especially for your suggestions.

cheers

I assume you're familiar with the No Limit Hold'em lessons overview on here? If not, that should be a good place to start. You may eventually need Gold status, but there's plenty of stuff below that too.

The short answer is: Whenever you feel comfortable.

The old advice was 25 buy-ins, I believe, with 10 buy-ins being considered loose and 50 buy-ins being considered conservative. Times may have changed. I think 50 buy-ins are definitely appropriate but you could pick something lower than that, if you prefer. For Hold'em, at least. PLO may require some more careful management, maybe 50-100 buy-ins.

But yeah, pick whatever amount you're comfortable with.
