Apologies in advance for this quick rant but I hope it will be therapeutic.

I lost a huge pot on the river last night and I felt so cheated.

It was like opening an envelope, expecting to read a love letter, only to discover it was a "Dear John", and then being tapped on the shoulder to be greeted by a grinning face offering salvation through yoga.

I've been grinding a bit too heavily over the last few days and I've also started my 100NL campaign which, so far, has been somewhat less than succesful.

Here was last night's reaction to the wider range of 3-betting:

The pub had the Everton game streamed on a laptop that was hooked up to the TV. It was far from legal; it was far from audible.

Normally, the venue is able to steer its equally illegal satellite to find the football from a TV station in Europe but, such was the global interest in Everton vs. Fulham, the landlord had to phone a friend who was then bussed in for his knowledge of questionable feeds.

He neglected to bring a power pack for the laptop. The silent coverage cut out after Everton went ahead and was replaced by boozed up swearing. It was a terrible match, but the alternative was to have a conversation. FFS.

I left the pub early as I was in a bad mood after having my meaty arse carved up and palmed to the 100NL regulars. However, I think I have had a revelation. I lost on Thursday because I was scared. A similar scenario is mentioned in The Mental Game of poker.

Pascal "Stake Monster" Tremblay relates that the anxiety he felt during a bad patch was caused, partly, because he thought it would precipitate a spell of depression. He had had a bad bout when he was 18 and the fear that it could recur caused him problems at the tables.

In my case, thirteen years ago, I was in a bad job but was writing screenplays in my spare time.

(I was doing my bit to precipitate community wide depression.)

I was also involved in a relationship and thought that the only way of keeping her was to be a successful writer.

So, my second screenplay, a comedy, was rushed.

The inevitable rejection crushed me for years.

I lost weight, found myself in a questionable domestic situation and took to supporting Everton.

The desire for change had imbalanced my critical faculties. The script was not ready for the world. On Thursday, my poker game was not ready for 100NL and again, my psychology was at fault: I have one eye on the flight in March with The Moll.

However, the poker error is reversible. I watched Leatherass' 3-Bet Pot vids, and went back to 50NL tonight.

I had a great session as I ran Mississippi bluffs, attacked the wide 3 betters and managed my fear.

The next time I'm at 100NL, I'll be prepared.

It seems to me that supporting Everton is your biggest leak. Plug that, and boooooom, you will crush NL100.

Hahahaha epic and reminds me of the pub I go to with their equally illegal satellite dish transmitting foreign (Usually Danish I believe) coverage of 3pm Man Utf matches. Fortunately, their's has never failed to find our game, unfortunately, there are times when the coverage is so twitchy and jumpy that it is almost unwatchable (5-0 away to Bolton springs to mind, where we missed the first 3 goals AND their replays, and subsequently had to down our pints and run to a different illegally broadcasting public house to watch the remainder).

JT would probably argue that could be "accumulated emotion." Everton are certainly not a team flowing with unconscious competence.

Everton still in the cup (with a +EV draw, even by their standards) and I'm continuing to broaden my 3-bet play, based on the output of Leatherass.

The latter hand: at the time, I thought he was tilting. I'm still not sure it was a mistake, though. The plan was to call down a hit and raise a draw or a dry board.

Possibly, I should have assumed he was giving me credit as the UTG raiser and therefore must have a powerhouse. Pre-Leatherass, I probably would have folded.

Talking of accepting defeat, I can't recommend Netflix to film lovers. I'm on the free trial and can't find anything worth watching.

The whole database seems to be full of the kind of films that are advertised on bus stops outside school gates.

The jump from 50 to 100NL is apparently huge (I Haven't done this yet, so I'm relying on what I've read).

I read somewhere that you play poker anything up to 50NL, anything beyond that and you are a poker player.

There's always some flashy little show off like that Isildur1 chappy, spinning up 2k to multi-tabling millions against Dwan and Ivey in a matter of months. For most players the progression is likely to be a bit more steady - and will involve many set backs.

Don't be too harsh on yourself. But, I like your attitude and plan - drop back, study, prepare and have another go.

Being scared is fine; playing scared is bad.

It aint about how hard you hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.

Thanks for your words about the plans. I've looked at the sessions of 100 NL and, of the six stacks I lost over the four days, three of them are post flop, pistol whippings of variance.

However, overall, my game was fairly passive and I didn't play well enough to win.

I'll post a month's review tomorrow. In the meantime, here is a hand from last night that suits the multi-layered theme of this post.

One guy(?) was far too happy with the 3-Bet option from SB and, five minutes before the hand, I had jammed him with a 4 bet AI. As he took time deciding, I projected onto him a sense of aggravation. He folded, I hoped, meekly.

Hence, I did the following move which, I think, is an example, of acknowledging that I need to be forcing errors, instead of letting fear at a higher limit control me.

(Although the guy is a 50 NL reg, whether the play would be paid off at 100 is debatable. What is more cetain, however, is that had the hand been played before the jamming session, he probably would have 3-Bet pre flop .)

I tend to drift into passivity a lot. I've cranked up my aggro factor from a woeful 1.5 a year or so ago to a much healthier 3, but I still let so many good spots drift past me.

I am of course making an assumption here based on two facts. The first is that this kind of unsavoury, illegal activity doesn't occur in the drinking establishments of the south. The second is that nobody from the south supports Everton - they all support Manchester United.
