Agreed on the genius of almost all HBO drama shows. I've still not finished The Wire, but so far (End of season 3 if you're interested) I am utterly addicted.
I'm jealous as I sometimes wish I could experience inexplicable amnesia so I could be a Wire virgin.
(Actually, that sounds like a narrative for a NBC/BDSM marriage.....)

Bah.
You're right.. but still, bah.
I came to the conclusion last night that my MTT game suffers from the condition described in the Edgar Allen Poe story, The Imp of the Perverse: it is
"a cloud of unnamable feeling [that] chills the very marrow of our bones with the fierceness of the delight of its horror."
In my case, it is at its strongest during the final stages of a MTT when I want to 3-bet 9-5os into a guy who is pot committed.
I acknowledge the play's insanity and its seductiveness; consequently, my battle against The Imp leads to an inactive game.
Last night, I was 1/18 in a $10R that started with 668 players when I became aware of The Imp.
It shut me down.
I finished 9th, partly because I was scared that I would succumb to call of The Imp.
Bah.

If you get bored of 'bah', I find that 'pfffffffff' is a satisfying alternative.
And tell the Imp you play MTTs to win!

I didn't have a name for it, however late in an MTT when I find myself thinking, "Ah what the hell" as I reach for the all-in key, I've learned to back down.

At the moment, I'm cowering.....
A few months ago, I decided to write a poker e-book.
So, 'tis with great fanfare that I'm now proud to announce that, after lots of sweat, I have got as far as a shortlist of titles.
Yes, they were created three months ago and I've done absolutely no writing on the project.
However, today, a thought pinged into my head: some members of this poker community may like to help me choose the title and, when that is done, I can start the damn thing because of the galvanising power of social pressure.
So, I'd be very grateful on your votes on the following titles. The book will be a gentle parody of popular science/self-help.
Some of the titles may offend: I'll put them under "spoilers." (And some are less serious than others.)
("And please don't nick them", said Malone, somewhat naively.)
Remember: your vote counts.

Spoiler number 2 for me.
If I ever saw a book with that title, trust me, I'm buying and reading.
And I want the t-shirt too.

This is available on a t-shirt, apparently. I think it is hilarious (but then I'm a child, really) - but there may be people who find it very offensive.

Thanks Wriggers, I like those too.
There is a danger they may alienate my all ready miniscule audience but hey-ho.

I've seen an even more offensive picture relating to that, from a controversial metal band IIRC, I don't really think I can post the picture though since i'd probably get banned from the site ♦

Jesus Is A Cunt.
Ever since I finished The Mental Game of Poker, I've found myself obsessing about the many different ways one's state of mind affects the action at the tables.
I'm connecting everything I read to how I play poker. The previous post about The Imp? Well, he's now been replaced by the thought that I suffer from the multi table tournament version of the following, taken from "Connected", by James Fowler and Nicholas Christakis.
They are describing "culture-bound-sydrome":
"The classic example of a culture-bound-sydrome is Koro, a condition that is seen is some Asian countries and that involves intense anxiety arising from the conviction among afflicted men that their penises are receding into their bodies and might disappear, and that they may die as a result.
The treatment consists of asking trusted family members to hold the penis twenty-four a day for some days to prevent it receding."

The book should have been called ...

Thanks for all of your emails: you're welcome.
I owe you all an apology, though: the cessation of posts was only temporary.
I've been on the move but I was finally moved to resume posting by the latest challenge to my powers of concentration.
Last night, I was in the middle of a six table session, listening to some talk radio, when I discovered that a man from Crewe has claimed that he had sex with wee Jimmy Krankie when both of them were inside a pantomime horse.
That's not covered in the poker manuals. It rather unseated my attempted gallop to 100NL. This morning's steward's enquiry into my results concluded that talk radio has to be banned from my table time, if I am to make my goal of playing NL200 by mid-March.
That's when a Moll and I going to board a plane. She's going to pursue a business idea and I plan to rely on poker as we attempt a modern day take on Beauty & the Beast.
If I'm distracted by explicit costume drama, I fear I'll remain stuck in Neverland.
From a ridiculous post to a ridiculous session: it began with a flopped straight flush yielding an awesome seven big blinds and ended with bankroll squeezed to the tune of seven buy-ins.
It was the kind of session that, in the relative dark ages of the early noughties, players would have been tempted to ascribe to the curse of the cash out. I had just moved some dough from the site and some of the hand outcomes tested my acceptance of the powers of variance.
Pick your favourite unenlightened buffoon from days of yore, for in terms of online poker, last night I was he.
I now about to embark on a session review as I desperately need to discern whether or not last night’s experience of over sets being beaten on the river by under sets had a wider negative impact on the six hour session.
I will be desperately clutching to the good book* for protection against the forces of the unpredictable.

The Mental Game of Poker
Sometimes, it takes more than just the good book.
I've just finished a seven hour session and I'm half a buy in down. It is not a lot, but I'm annoyed because in the last two hours I just gave my chips to the fish and that, of course, was ultimately an all-you-can eat buffet to the sharks.
I should be 2.5 BI ahead but my concentration dipped.
Fraility, thy name is Malone.
I'll blame the blood sugar. Time to stock on up on Yorkie bars.
Chocolate for big, butch men.
Marketing genius.

Yes that would break concentration. Is there a chapter in Jared's book?
My favourite story of UK celebrity deviancy features the recently departed Jimmy Saville.
When in his full pomp and majesty, he spent much of his time doing charity work at Stoke Mandeville Hospital (I'm sure you're of an age to remember this). When I was in the army, we were often asked to provide medical cover for big national events - kind of like St John's with machine guns. These events would go on for a week or so. When involved in doing these sort of things we would often work with the nurses from the local hospital. What with us being young soldiers and nurses being nurses, we often bonded quite quickly. On a night out, with a group of Stoke Mandeville's nurses, we were told the following story. This is late eighties ...
There is a porter who works in the hospital who idolises Jimmy. He dresses to look like Jimmy - he has the hair, the jewellery and on his days off wears the shiny gold tracksuits. He even uses the catchphrases - now then, now then; as it happens boys and girls etc etc.
He isn't a total ringer, but he looks a lot like him. When Jimmy fist met him he was a bit freaked out, but over the years of coming to the hospital the two have formed a friendship. That friendship has grown, to the point when one day they were discovered in an unused office, wanking each other off.
I'm not which of the Jimmy images I find more disturbing ... and I have spent decades boxing the Saville image into the recesses of my mind, only for it now to awaken. The horror ... the horror.
I presume Jimmy Crankie was the head of the horse, but I can't work out the details. Was it whilst on stage?
