So there is not such a urge to rush moving up anymore. For this reason I set the BRM-Table to be more conservative:
Looks good -- it is always good to have reasonably achievable goals

Thanks all for your support. It makes me feel less lonely on my journey. ![]()
After my arrival I lost 5 stacks (100,-$) on a shottinng trial at PLO20 in October. I made a second deposit and started from scratch at PLO5 with the BR required. So I am back to serious Grind this month where I am running with an incredible winrate of 75bb/100 so far:
I am playing both on Natural8 (GG-Network) and Win2day (Local Austrian-Finnish Site). The Graph only shows the results from Win2day cause I cant track hands at GG. I play 2x45min sessions in the afternoon due to low traffic and anonther 2x45min in the evening at Win2day. GG I am also up sth like 5-10 stacks.

Well, I dont think you should ever go below 30 Buyin no matter which stakes. In the commentaries there are lots of doubts aswell, now I try to have at least 40 buyin for the stake I play and go shotting as soon as i have additional 10 stacks available. I am also not in a hurry at all with moving up. If the shot fails, I won´t be able to grind it in within a few days anyways, so I am shotting at the begin of the month only and after failure I can tick it off and return to the stake I know I beat. This way I can finish a month without having thoughts about shotting all the time and if the shot at the start of the month fails, I am not tempted to fall back into a "win it back for the shot" mentality. Finally 10 stacks for a shot allows me to open 3-4 tables and rebuy without moving up and down during the session. It kinda destroys my gameflow what I have experienced from the Tankroll challenge that failed in August.

Yes Indeed, Preflop is so important though. It is good start with some ideas of your raise first in ranges and work through step by step for every situation like facing RFI, facing 3bet oop, 4bets etc.. The critical factor is floppable Equity-Distribution and find the right frequencies and which sort of hands to fill em. For this purpose I cann recommend Jnandez´s new book "Mastering Small-Stakes Pot-Limit Omaha", you have 9 hand categories which do fine for beginners. I am workinng regularly on my Preflop gameplan and finished my personal 16,7% a little tighter but derived from GTO-Range for EP (for the 100th time..
).

If you are wondering what orange means, it is double-suited with both suits being Broadways
November is over:
There are also like 1,5k hands PLO10 shots mixed in it which I ran break-even alltogether. I finished the RFI ranges from EP, MP, CO and BU from my gameplan. Now I started to work with Jnandez new book:

I already finished the chapters about preflop play and work now on the starting hand categories and compare them with thosein my gameplan. Overall didactics is a mess (as I know it from Jnandez), so I gotta write out the stuff and rearrange it (and ofc study the content of it). My study goal is to memorize my RFI gameplan and to finish his preflop section (chapter 2-4).
As planned for Dezember while doing this I´ll grind PLO10 and also mix in some € 3 R+A and $5 Tourneys. 64 buyins should be more than sufficient, my motto is to make deposits but no withdrawals. The goal here is to have the bankroll required in my shedule for PLO20 by the next year and the secondary goal is to achieve a 2-digit bb/100 winrate in Dezember.
I also have the book -- I've skimmed it, but like most books of the kind, you need to take the time to examine the examples, and to play some hands to identify the situations.
Maybe when my Real Life gets back to normal [1]
From what I saw though, the book is pretty solid.
I had a month membership in Mastermind last year -- I won it in a draw.
I also watch his stream frequently. He knows his stuff for sure.
[1] I no longer have any idea what normal is

Absolutely solid! Yea, he is a master brain with a master team. It is good scientific work in the area to lift the fog of war in pot-limit omaha. He also has good a good intention what is crucial and what concepts the information needs to be broken down into.
But his pedagogical skills are ... ugh ... non-existent? After watching a video, I have to watch it like 3 times and pause it after every sentence to get structure into the phrase-muddle.

There has just been so much to do over the past month that I haven't had time for more than a few quick poker sessions, and no time for study at all.
I haven't streamed in over a month. But tasks are slowly getting done -- one of them was to sort out a large bin of paper documents.
I have that one half done. When it is all done, I'll post before and after pics in my blog...
Last week I lost my discipline concerning BRM. ![]()
Since there was no traffic once more at PLO10 instead of heading back down and grind PLO5 I kept playing PLO20 although I was already down more than 5 stacks. This is definitely a mindset leak. Not capable of moving down the stakes although my Bankroll requires me to do so. It ended up blowing nearly 2/3 of my roll. Well. I did not blow it up completely and had some hands at PLO5. The environment there is more passiv but once variance is coming, I have to admit, I still have a mental leak here.

I am feel depleted as a result of what happened so I decided I am going to take a little Christmas break and reload once more next year. Also I will switch to full-time job. This will give me another burst of income but also cut down the time available for grind and studies to a minimum.
Well. I wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year to you all guys!
First good luck at your new working place! And then after expressing my sympathy I hope you learned at least something about aggression.
You sit way more often in the BU (43.6k) compared to CO (34.8k) => 20% of the hands are 3-handed.
Maybe check how well you did in 6-handed settings bb-per-100-wise and you might come to the conclusion you just need to improve your 3-handed game.

Thx!. I like you too. Thahaha. Well, I need just a couple of months to have the 40 buyins for PLO100. I can save a lot of the money. But if I like my job I will continue work unless I feel somehow safe with my sample and winrate so I´d quit.
Yes, I just checked it out. Well it is actually the other way round the I perform much better short-handed
(3&4-handed):
(vs 5&6-handed):
Without blinds and rake my winnings would be huuuge lol. ![]()
I already spotted the my flop cbet is probably much too low (around 35% innstead of the 60%) since I am betting so merged and very value-heavy. Other freq´s seem to be fine though. From this shortcut I also got the impression I might be playing a lots of hands not aggressive or consequently enough. And that I would be in pretty bad shape if the environment would not be so soft.
I prob have tons of leaks vs better regs (there are none at plo5, some abc tags at best) and barely time for deep work to actually get better.
I would use all in adj bb/100 instead of bb/100 or bb/hand.
And just start filtering a bit. How much do you win/lose with your coldcalls/3bets in that position compared to other positions. If you win more 3handed than 6handed you might play too loose vs early and middle position f.e.
Other than that it would be good to compare yourself with good regs. In which spots are they doing a lot better than you. That's usually the spots that are most worth looking at ;-)
Dezember wtf:
All stakes are contained inn that graph PLO5, PLO10 and PLO20. I cannot really explain what happened that month, only that I tried several shots at PLO20 which failed. Looks tilty since the EV-graph is dropping so hard too but I am not so sure about that. I have to admit that I did not strictly obey my own BRM and kept taking shots with less than 35 buyin for PLO20.
I lost 15 Stacks on PLO20, which does not seem to be much considering the much higher aggression before moving down to PLO10 where I lost another 13 stacks there, this time bad play might have been play involved. Maybe I should make a review of the sessions made in Dezember to get an overview of the quality of my sessions. Anyways, after my Christmas break I found back to my daily routine at PLO5 (my baseline), mixing it with PLO10 and prepping to take 5-bullet shots at PLO20 once I have 40 stacks, I would estimate in the middle of February.
Sorry to read that it does not go well.
And sorry for the following in advance. It all really is meant to help and only for that.
Basically you do not really need to look into how you played technically and review sessions. It won't help you.
You urgently need to find out what makes you leave your BRM and fix that. The question is not if you tilt. You do. Everybody does to some extent. But you do it in one of the worst possible ways for pokerplayers. You already showed that by not being able to handle your BRM multiple times. And if you tilt enough to leave BRM at times you definitely tilt while playing too.
You understand that what you are doing hurts your mid-/longterm goals with poker but you need to understand that it is the most important thing to work on and needs to be top priority if you want to be able to win at poker for more than a week or two. There probably will be sth telling yourself otherwise and you could do it with working on your technical game and then just don't leave BRM again. But you will leave it. You already have enough proof for that. You actually know. You "only" need to accept it (emotionally). And then you will know, what to do...
fully agree with trance. truth hurts but we had several discussions where the result was a) Masch slightly over estimates his edge on short upswings which might lead to those shots but also b) under estimates the effect of variance and runs into short therm downswings that are inevitable.
I would say Mascherano doesnt realize that even on his AAA+ game anything can happen on 10k hands and on his december 10k hands samplesize he might have played with 10bb/100h winrate but was just unlucky. prepare your mindset for another 5 months with 10k hands each and a breakeven result as a winner.
I told you before and I will tell you again: set yourself samplesize and study goals, its the only thing you have control of.
If you wonder what happend in december, it was a normal swong. If you shotted with preparation to move down in stakes when runbad and keep discipline on that, your shot taking is not a huge problem, you want to move up to better stakes in terms of rake asap. but not moving down is a heavy risk when you go for aggro brm.
if you cant make up to those aggro brm plans, start getting more conservative, like next upmove +5 stacks more than the last try.
PLO is a very hard test to your discipline and mindset, unlike trance I wont suggest to stop reviewing sessions but I would say stay disciplined and try not to tilt even a little bit is even more important than theory.
And from personal experience if you climb to plo20, switch to more conservative brm and start improving your GTO game, you will face tougher pools on plo50/100 as far as i can tell for gg
last point for gg: you might want to stop aggro brm here since moving up in stakes doesnt bring you to lower rake anyways

I digged deep down into my brain and found those reasons:
First, the reason is I would say that I feel pressure to "win fast" beause I spent so much time on poker now still dabbling around the same stakes like years ago. The final trigger I´d say is that if I have no traffic on PLO10 so I fell into a gray BR-area where I´d be overrolled for PLO5 but still somewhat underrolled for PLO20 or at least dont have the discipline to move 2 stakes down once shots go wrong. So I try to play higher if I win "faster" since the plus EV would be higher.
Second, the thinking is also, if I lose a significant part of my BR it does not matter cause I would be able to replenish it with my job income at the end of the month. Obviously a mindset leak, "confused thinking" as described in literature, my brain made an excuse to not move down and I was not aware enough how important it is to obey BRM.
And if you tilt enough to leave BRM at times you definitely tilt while playing too.
This is not true. I checked all the hands I played in this time. As I said, the hands I played at PLO20 were not misplayed technically, they look completely tilt-free to me and I would have played them the same way as always, if they are misplayed it is because of lack of skill. And I was able to move down before bad play started, and was capable to make a break instantly after a couple of tilt hands at PLO10. This was likely a good loss cut, so I did not lose more than I would have lost much more than due to variance, I mean 10k is not a big sample. But I was mentally prepared to pull the rip cord so there might be a root to another mindset leak that I would be capable to act so so it does not matter if I leave BR for a few amount of "stacks".

Well, the question is how many hands count as "upswing"? You´ve hit my ego now lol so I have to brag with my All-Time PLO5 Graph where I have 27bb/100 but over 84k hands. That´s a pretty good sample with comparable low variance (high winrate and low aggression).

Agree with this one. I stick to my 35+5 so I Play PLO10 this month to get my BR up around 500€ and no matter how it goes, I will fuel it up to 800€ at the end of month to make a shot on PLO20 and move down if I am below 700€. At the end I also have the pressure and the feeling that I am not making enough studies but I also dont find enough time/energy to do so beside my fulltime job. BrB.
At first, probs for facing those questions👍
That takes some courage and is not necessarily easy to do. Good start and well done!
The question now is why do you feel that way about needing to win fast even though you know that thought is in your way and conflicting with BRM? So basically going a layer deeper.
Btw it might help to play on another site as well and split your roll. So, you will always have enough PLO10 games. So, that excuse for moving to PLO20 disappears. Make sure not to play too many tables though and give yourself some time to get used to the new site before playing them mixed.
Trying other sites can be very beneficial btw. Leaving pokerstrategy member invested partypoker in 2008 to IPoker made me an instant winner while I was grinding breakeven on Party. And even in 2020 changing from the site I played my most volume on (and destroyed 1/2 there but could not beat higher stakes before rakeback) to another site made me a winner up to 5/T.
So, what I want to say is that working on the technical game is good and should be done but working on the bigger things like mindset and gameselection is what can make a way bigger difference than studying hands for a year. Similar things apply for database analysis ("where do I win/lose more than the good regs on my limit?" "What are the good players on PLO20 doing different than on PLO5" aso) and putting more thoughts in how to use a HUD.
I remember doubling the winrate of me and my flatmate just by doing one thing more often that I found in our databases. And some non-standard HUD-stats and understanding them improved the game quite drastically as well (and it still does today).
So, if you only have a limited time for studying and if you play the same stakes for years you might need to change your approach to learning. There is a quote in German that goes "Ein Dummkopf ist, wer immer das Gleiche tut, aber unterschiedliche Ergebnisse erwartet" what basically means "a fool is someone who always does the same but expects different results". I don't know you enough to know if that applies. But a lot of people (absolutely including myself) tend to make little changes and think they are way bigger than they actually are. So, if your approach always has been to study only the technical game in the last years (what I don't know but most players tend to as it is convenient) and messed up, it might be time for a new approach. And a good one to start is "how/what do I need to change in order to be successful?" and on a smaller scale "how can I keep my BRM?"
Regarding the tilt thing. With all respect to variance I can't see how someone with a >20ev-bb/100 winrate on PLO5 can play with <-20ev-bb/100 over 10k hands on PLO10 and a bit of PLO20. without tilt/bad play playing a huge role tbh. How does your tableselection look like btw?
Good luck at the tables
