Haha, yeah those were hard times. Not on in the technical part, but rather mental.

He's still got the NL5 fish in him though, don't worry

I'd say 3bet is fine in a vacuum imo. He doesn't fold to 3bets that often, but it's a small sample, and you'll be playing in position against a fish. And 97o doesn't play particularly well so probably okay to just turn it into a bluff. I think flatting should be okay too, to just play a pot in position against a fishy reg.
When he donks the flop large and then checks turn I except him to be have some sort of showdown value that he doesn't want to bet again because he's scared of all draws having hit. If he donked with a flush draw, he's betting again, if he donked with a straight draw like KT, he's betting again, etc.
So imo you can probably bet twice and expect to take it down very often. imo bet $9 or so OTT and ship river. Depends a bit of course, if he goes to showdown very often and you expect he might station down with Qx, then I'd say you can just give up.
I'd bet/shove here though on most river cards, to put pressure on his SD value hands.
I agree on the first part, calling is definitely good preflop. We can use position, and regs usually give up pretty easily in SB.
I think if he has showdown value, he would rather x/c than bet and then don't know what to do. Because if he donks, he decreases the chances to get to showdown with his showdown value. So either he donks because he has nutted hand, or he is just bad and has pure air and doesn't know to play with it, i.e. "72o... LOL BET!" or w/e.
I agree that after he checks turn we definitely barrel river and expect him to fold pretty often, though I think $9 is a little bit too large. Yes we want to pressure him, but if we think about it, the board texture already is putting lots of pressure vs his weak hands? I would rather better bet half pot, and then shove river. I like your thinking.

pre flop looks like a 100% peel more than strong enough to call in position and vs a guy who doesnt fold muchvs 3bets we can even be dominated or not flop very well vs his range much either.
But the thing is his range is also so weak that he probably won't be flopping well either. We have position and players on lower limits have the problem playing well in 3bet pots, especially OOP. This 3bet is a bit out of my standard, but we have to mix things up sometimes, don't we?
But in general I think this can be played profitably by 3betting vs player who has poor hand selection.
The actual hand
Poker Stars, $0.10/$0.25 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 6 Players
BTN: $12.34 (49.4 bb)
SB: $54.81 (219.2 bb)
Hero (BB): $39.31 (157.2 bb)
UTG: $26.95 (107.8 bb)
MP: $31.95 (127.8 bb)
CO: $52.03 (208.1 bb)
Preflop: Hero is BB with 9♠ 7♥
4 folds, SB raises to $0.75, Hero raises to $2, SB calls $1.25
Flop: ($4) Q♦ 9♦ 2♠ (2 players)
SB bets $3.75, Hero calls $3.75
Turn: ($11.50) J♦ (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $5.50, SB folds
Results: $11.50 pot ($0.52 rake)
Final Board: Q♦ 9♦ 2♠ J♦
SB mucked and lost (-$5.75 net)
Hero mucked 9♠ 7♥ and won $10.98 ($5.23 net)
Yes, nothing spectacular happened here.
On the flop his donkbet doesn't make total sense for me, especially this big. Why does he want to overbet and expect me to call? I think this is the standard spot where most guys would just give up. Yes he has some value hands I suppose, but the value hand I can see there is 22 really... QQ and AQ would probably 4bet against me and I block 99. So it makes easy call as I expect him to give up pretty often.
Turn hits my perceived range so well... it looks like scary card but in reality it's the best hand for me. So the plan there would be bet/shove as Tino suggested as well. And I already explained my sizing reasons. Whatever value hand or semibluff donks flop will always bet turn IMO.
Grind hard,
Rihard
