I did not get in as many hands as I wanted this weekend. I did, however, have a fantastic time with my family, had a great strength workout and won a little bit at the tables. #lolsample

I started at 5nlz as I had so many losing days lately and it was going very nicely so I moved up to 10nlz and got run over immediately (250h on graph).

I dropped back to 5nlz and built back up again and then finished the session off with more 10nlz and got into profit there too.

Was not sure if to value bet river on this hand...

Poker Stars, $0.02/$0.05 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 6 Players

SB: $5.37 (107.4 bb)
BB: $4.59 (91.8 bb)
UTG: $7.36 (147.2 bb)
Hero (MP): $5.55 (111 bb)
CO: $8.20 (164 bb)
BTN: $5.02 (100.4 bb)

Preflop: Hero is MP with A♣: K♥:
UTG folds, Hero raises to $0.15, 3 folds, BB calls $0.10

Flop: ($0.32) 9♠: 5♥: A♦: (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $0.28, BB raises to $0.72, Hero calls $0.44

Turn: ($1.76) 3♦: (2 players)
BB bets $1, Hero calls $1

River: ($3.76) 5♠: (2 players)
BB checks, Hero checks

Results:

Spoiler

$3.76 pot ($0.16 rake)
Final Board: 9♠: 5♥: A♦: 3♦: 5♠:
BB showed 7♥: 6♥: and lost (-$1.87 net)
Hero showed A♣: K♥: and won $3.60 ($1.73 net)

I think fish does not have nuts on flop as they prefer to slow play nuts so I let him carry on by calling. I think he can have worse Ax, 9x, 5x, other pp's and air.

Turn is blank and I am not worried about BDFD so call as I have position too.

River I checked back and I think this is MUBS as the fish will call with his Ax and 9x and 5x is unlikely. So I think I missed a lot of value here.

Please berate thought process.

Other Stuff...

I did a good upper body strength workout on Saturday after work. It is 48 hours later now and I can feel the soreness in my triceps, biceps and lats. I like this as I know I did some good work if I get sore.

My hams and quads are still a tiny bit sore from last Thursday's leg workout so will give it another day at least before training them again!

Yesterday we spent a couple of hours at Kenilworth Castle which is just by our house. Because we are local residents we get free passes to visit there! Usually it costs around £30 for a family ticket so we are really lucky! The kids love it there as they can run around the old ruins and generally cause mischief!!!

Tonight is Wing Chun Kung Fu class and then 1400 poker hands! Oh and the leftovers from yesterday's fantastic roast dinner that Helen cooked for us!!! Magnifico!!!

Have a good couple of days amigos and don't forget to teach me how to play the hand better please!

I don't answer to everything because I don't feel like I have something great to offer about every bit of thoughts you put into your blog but there can always be someone which has something interesting to say about it, like BadHabit (for the Offspring's song ?) with your fitness training.

Anyway crushing micros is a more tedious process than it might seem, so it's normal to feel somewhat disapointed, keep grinding it up !

Thanks for great comforting words amigo! :f_drink:

Pokerstars (UK) seems to be down for me right now so I will post a hand or two instead...

1. Is this okay/standard?

Poker Stars, $0.05/$0.10 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 6 Players

SB: $10.42 (104.2 bb)
BB: $13.30 (133 bb)
UTG: $16.11 (161.1 bb)
Hero (MP): $10.15 (101.5 bb)
CO: $10.32 (103.2 bb)
BTN: $12.94 (129.4 bb)

Preflop: Hero is MP with A♣: J♣:
UTG folds, Hero raises to $0.25, 3 folds, BB calls $0.15

Flop: ($0.55) 8♦: A♦: 2♣: (2 players)
BB checks, Hero checks

Turn: ($0.55) 3♠: (2 players)
BB bets $0.31, Hero calls $0.31

River: ($1.17) K♣: (2 players)
BB bets $1, Hero calls $1

Results:

Spoiler

$3.17 pot ($0.14 rake)
Final Board: 8♦: A♦: 2♣: 3♠: K♣:
BB showed 8♣: 8♥: and won $3.03 ($1.47 net)
Hero mucked A♣: J♣: and lost (-$1.56 net)

I had no reads on the villain.

I could use position and bet twice for value from FD, 78, 89, TT-JJ, worse Ax (but I don't think so many of these and can have AQ sometimes AK).

Or play it as I did.

2. I think this is standard... (no reads)

Poker Stars, $0.05/$0.10 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 6 Players

SB: $10.92 (109.2 bb)
BB: $10.61 (106.1 bb)
UTG: $10.37 (103.7 bb)
MP: $10.10 (101 bb)
CO: $13.65 (136.5 bb)
Hero (BTN): $10 (100 bb)

Preflop: Hero is BTN with T♦: 9♦:
3 folds, Hero raises to $0.25, SB folds, BB raises to $1, Hero calls $0.75

Flop: ($2.05) 9♥: 5♦: J♦: (2 players)
BB bets $1, Hero calls $1

Turn: ($4.05) A♥: (2 players)
BB bets $2, Hero calls $2

River: ($8.05) Q♦: (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $6 and is all-in, BB calls $6

Results:

Spoiler

$20.05 pot ($0.90 rake)
Final Board: 9♥: 5♦: J♦: A♥: Q♦:
BB showed A♦: 7♣: and lost (-$10 net)
Hero showed T♦: 9♦: and won $19.15 ($9.15 net)

Being in position I think it is okay to call flop and turn and I don't think I should re raising at any point.

3. Stab in checked MW pot with T-high

Poker Stars, $0.05/$0.10 No Limit Hold'em Cash, 6 Players

SB: $12.72 (127.2 bb)
Hero (BB): $10.24 (102.4 bb)
UTG: $13.58 (135.8 bb)
MP: $11.59 (115.9 bb)
CO: $19.65 (196.5 bb)
BTN: $21.96 (219.6 bb)

Preflop: Hero is BB with T♣: 5♣:
2 folds, CO raises to $0.25, BTN folds, SB calls $0.20, Hero calls $0.15

Flop: ($0.75) J♥: K♥: 3♠: (3 players)
SB checks, Hero checks, CO checks

Turn: ($0.75) K♠: (3 players)
SB checks, Hero checks, CO checks

River: ($0.75) 2♠: (3 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $0.43, CO calls $0.43, SB folds

Results:

Spoiler

$1.61 pot ($0.07 rake)
Final Board: J♥: K♥: 3♠: K♠: 2♠:
SB mucked and lost (-$0.25 net)
Hero showed T♣: 5♣: and lost (-$0.68 net)
CO showed 9♦: J♦: and won $1.54 ($0.86 net)

Preflop get good odds. Nobody has much here including me and I can fold out better hands.

Hopefully you can help me please amigos? Have a good evening!

Hello ! _drink:

First for the AKo : I like it as played. Don't level yourself because you "often" win the pot river as played, the thing is you're gonna win "mostly" versus hands that wouldn't have called a river bet anyway. Better not to risk being check/raised again I think as I see mostly bluffs and sets/fulls here.

1) AJs : Why checking flop ? I think you have better Ax to check here, that is to say lower kicked ones without the BDFD. It's great to check some, sure, but there are way better candidates for that so usually you rather want to bet this one.
As played flop nothing more to say.

2)The 3bet is big but you can call and then yes it's often smarter not to raise flop nor turn when you have a pair with the FD so I agree all the way.

3)Ouch... fold preflop. Nothing to do with that hand, even with those odds. And nothing to try river either. Don't level yourself on that kind of spots, it's useless.

That's my feel for today, gl hf ! _drink:

Poker Update! Two Days!

On Monday night Stars went down for me so lost an hour there and posted some hands. Last night I also lost a bit of time as kids were playing up at bedtime and then wife had a crisis but did not lose more than an hour...

Graph (Two sessions)

I was hoping to get 3000 hands in but the gods said no.

Also I have not been sleeping well over the last week or so so I don't want to stay up any longer to catch time up as it is EV- imo.

I only slept 4 or 5 hours the last few nights which I can live with but don't want to go any less!

We had some excitement as some construction workers found an unexploded bomb from World War II near my work! (News link here)

It totally destroyed the traffic in the city and made my drive to and from work more like 2 hours each way instead of one hour! On two days too!

Fortunately I live 25 miles from the bomb but my kids were still scared we are going to be blown to bits!!!

I did manage to fit in a legs workout last night but it was not a very good one as my kids wanted to be involved but it was already bedtime! We video recorded it so will show soon as should be a bit funny at least!

I have not got any muscle soreness this morning and that makes me sad! Maybe it will come tomorrow!!!

Help on hands would be great please amigos...

I really don't like this flop as my two pair feels a bit weak and I cannot get 3 streets of value, especially 3-way when I will rep a strong range by betting. Maybe I could XC flop?

Anyway I bet because there are some draws there especially pair + draw like AQ, AJs, ATs, KQ, KJs, KTs, T9s and 99 might call too. Also JT I beat. Maybe sometimes CO has KK???

Turn I felt similar. I can get some value again and feel that they would have raised some sets on flop and T9 too. I think all those hands could call again but probably not 99.

River I cannot get value. Only JT might call a small bet.

I don't think there are enough missed draws to XC, probably not any as they will not turn AT into bluff at micros.

He did bet only 0.5x so I need to be good 1 in 4 times. In game I was thinking "he would have raised sets and straights but he has QT and TJ that might bet small so call!!!".

Can you rip that apart for me please amigos!?

Turn: ($4) 4♣: (2 players)

Do you think I could make a small bet here (0.6x) to get value from Qx (although not many in range)?

Thank Floxy.

Yes, most people agreed with betting AJ. But one high stakes player said it was okay to check (aka I think more like high stakes players LDO!!! :f_drink: :f_drink: :f_drink: ).

T5s my coach likes to call a lot in BB multiway but I tend to agree with you especially considering rake.
Thanks amigo!

I really don't know how to work this hand out!

When he X flop I think he does not have an overpair as most guys at 10nlz are value betting here. He can have AK, AQ though that I would like to make fold and I have tonnes of equity so I bet with plan to bet 2 or 3 streets, probably 3.

Then he XR me and I doubt he has sets just because I don't see guys 3b low pp's in SB very often so now I am thinking he can have like JJ+ and he always has a value hand imo (at these games).

As the pot is already $6.70ish and I have $9 behind with $2.20 to call it just seems to me easy to jam now while my equity is at its highest. Folding is not an option and if I call I might lose action on a spade or my equity decreases if I miss.

Hello, way more hh from you recently but that's just what I've asked =)

From yesterday :

QTs : Such crapy flop I'm not even sure everybody's betting here but I like to bet flop. Turn is often already a clear check though. As played you can't bluffcatch as he is too likely to have a straight and you're blocking too much of his potential valuing thin and bluffing ranges.

AQo : Nicely controlled, but it should be possible indeed to find a third or quarter pot river as I don't see him checking Kx or better twice as a row.

From today :

AQs : If there is any hand that doesn't need to stab this flop it's this one, you aren't gonna acomplish anything by betting here except trying to force your equity versus a strong range. Crystal clear check flop for me.
As played I also prefer to just call the raise rather than shoving already (but yes we're gonna call a shove on any turn).
All in all I think you should wrap that kind of spot with way more subtelty. There is room for much better than just playing coin flips for stacks. Think about both whole ranges etc... What did he have in the end ?

QTs : Perfect except that you should x/shove river yes.

muscle sorness is no indicator if the workout was good or bad.
As a complete beginner you will have soreness pretty.
In big muscles (legs, back) you will have soreness more often + longer (in general)
small muscles like biceps, triceps and abdominals you will have not have that often sorenss and it will not stick with you as long as the bigger muscles.
That's why alot of coaches preach that you can workout biceps abdominals etc every single day while you should workout legs only every 3rd day (that way of thinking is complete trash tho).

So don't be sad. and dont judge if your workout was good on soreness the next day.

In fact soreness is counterproductive because it tells you you went to hard on your muscles and need extra time to recover, so no more workouts during that time and no more gorw signals can be send during the time of recovery.

Week Summary

Graph

I was hoping for 8000+ hands this week but circumstances prevented it. Also I am playing a little bit slower preflop, as I think I can auto-pilot there too much.

Confidence is pretty low at the moment mostly as I seem to have dropped in stakes rather than moved up.

Still my redline is terrible and my BB win rate is terrible. Only my SB win rate improved over the last 6 months, every other situation dropped.

This is because I am in way more pots now than I was 6 months ago and my postflop play is terrible.

I will need to improve this to move up though so it is, hopefully, better that I get into these postflop situations and learn rather than avoiding them altogether.

I have not had much coaching over the last couple of months (for good reasons) but hopefully once June arrives we will get back into it and get my game moving forward.

Net profit (week) = +$5.62
Rakeback (week) = +$10.00

Total Profit (week) = +$15.62

500 day challenge total profit = +$31.95

Current Bankroll = $1048.75

At least it is some positive numbers eh amigos!

Have a great weekend!

Hi guys!

That was some weekend!

Had a stag party on Saturday night and although it was nothing special the alcohol consumption was well over the top!!!

Resulted in a wasted Sunday!

Looking forward to the wedding next Sunday. #notdrinking

I played a couple of sessions over the weekend...

Saturday

Sunday

So yeah, more break even shenanigans. Which is actually better than the whole story for May...

May graph so far

Gross. I shouldn't even be playing 10nlz never mind getting my ass kicked!!!

----

40000 HANDS IN MAY

This challenge will be ended today as I am going to be working late all week this week. Something came up totally unexpected so I don't know whether I will play any hands at all!

I will still be able to a little bit of study though but not much.

I was at 24739 hands with 21 of 31 days gone (67.7%) so I was 2357 hands behind. #feeble

----

Have a good week amigos! I will pop in if something awesome happens!

Why Am I So **** At Poker (and what I could do about it)

Why?

I do not understand the fundamentals of poker and due to mental weakness/bias I am a passive folding machine.

What I Could Do?

#1 Realise that nobody has anything!

How?
- Look at database and see examples of where nobody has anything
- Use equilab and e.g look at a standard 10nlz reg button open range and then look at a cbet range (guess 60% avg) on lots of boards and VISUALIZE that indeed they have nothing (other than some equity (maybe). Yes Chris, they do not have top set every time.
- Continue above and look at a turn cbet range and see that wow, they do not have anything still (other than some equity (maybe))!
- Learn how to combat/defend against/attack this. Actually I know quite a lot of this but due to "Why #1" I think I don't do it enough (or at least chicken out too early)

#2 Remove fear

How?
- I will not remove fear by thinking "I must remove fear"!
- I need to use courage (remind self of Taekwondo fights and risking my house to buy more houses)
- Using courage involves doing the thing that I am "scared" to do.
- Using courage means making mistakes. Lots of mistakes. Realise that without making mistakes (and losing money) this is not going to get resolved. Resolve to MAKE LOTS OF MISTAKES FOR THE SAKE OF A BREAKTHROUGH.
- Share those mistakes because guess what? 1. Some of them might not be mistakes! Losing money/hands/getting caught bluffing/ is PART OF THE GAME!!! 2. That is how you LEARN!!!

#3 To be continued...

This could be okay, esp versus ME.

Conclusion:
Yes, not only do they bluff but they bet worse made hands (I dunno whether they protect or what tbh)
There were not many hands in my DB where I called flop and turn facing cbets (I left river action as whatever but saw showdown = yes) and as I don't float enough I can assume I fold too much. Holy shit, my FvCB flop is 59% and my FvCB turn is 50% hahahahahahahahaha.

GTFO Chris, GO HOME!!!

Hi there! My thoughts about hands:

1. I would 3bet this preflop. Postflop is fine, I think.

2. I would 3bet preflop, too. As played, I think we should fold the turn.

3. I like it as played.

4. Fine.

5. We can also 3bet preflop sometimes imo. I believe postflop is fine.

My Fold vs Flop CB is 52 and Fold vs Turn CB is 53. :f_rolleyes: Check your W$WSF, it's probably somewhere around 45% (like mine). Don't know what to do about this. Lately I check all the hands where I folded vs Flop CB and vs Turn CB and try to figure out should I defend. The problem is that everytime when it's "close", I decide to fold.

Hello, first of all to work on that kind of problem (or any frequency stuff for that matters) I strongly recomand the reading of "Poker 1% : the one big secret that keeps elite player on top" by Ed Miller and "Applications of NLH" by Matthew Janda.

Second, be careful not leveling yourself when fearing being too weak, it's the best way to end up making bad calls ! When I see your hh n°2 I'd not say you are that fold-happy lol.

Third I mostly agree with Alleen's comment, ie most plays are fine, but JJ is 3betable indeed, moreover at micros.
For the 2° hh I think it's close, I wouldn't be too shocked by somebody folding even flop, but going all the way and stoping turn both have their points too.

DON'T BE A PUSSY! (Part 3)

Let's Visualise Just How F.O.S They Are...

Villains are c-betting flop a high percentage at my games.

Whether that is because they see "FML this guy folds to cbet 59%" or whether they do c-bet flop tonnes in general I cannot be sure.

My guess is that they c-bet at least 60% of the time and probably it is way more.

Here is a snapshot of a 60% c-bet range on J94tt if the opener opens 58.5% of hands (purely to help me visualise what it COULD be)...

So, for ME, I need to realise that there is a hell of a lot of crap in villain's range. Hands like Q5o with a 1 card BDFD, crappy gutshots like 87, 2 card BDFD's like 72dd.

Villain's range is wide and weak and just has to be exploitable. Somehow.

I need to stop folding!

To be continued...

Hi mate! Yh I don't want to get into how I played those HH's too much (but ty for taking the time to comment, I mostly agree), I just wanted to make some visualisations of what villains are doing.

My W$WSF is very similar. A little lower but then it is hard to win money by folding 60% on the flop!

Hopefully we can both improve in this area a little! :f_drink:

Yes, I have both of those books so will consider reading them.

This is a mental issue in my opinion that is coupled with a lack of knowledge too. I need to consider villain's range a lot more than I do. It seems I just put them on a tight/value range all of the time. In fact I am not aware enough of what my cbet range should look like either, never mind villain's!

Much work to do. Lovely.

Hey,

I just watched a video about this topic. Some basic maths that really opened by eyes.

Villian fires a 0.5 pot cbet on the flop. The well known formula 0.5/1.5 = 1/3. So Villian needs us to fold just over 33.3% of the time to generate instant profit. We need to be defending 100% - 33.3% = 66.6% of the time they cbet. That is a lot more than I would have ever thought.

I am having a really hard time implementing this myself at the tables. I am really seeing the importance of studying these textures. It's kind of crazy.

DON'T BE A PUSSY - Part 4

Look how much BS there is if a 25% opening range cbets ~55% on some random flops...

Flop 1...

Hmm, gutshots, 1 card BDFD's. Lot's of WEAK HANDS.

GET THIS IN YOUR THICK SKULL!!!

---

Flop 2...

Same. Loads of weak hands.

GETTING THIS YET CHRIS???

Stop folding and "DON'T BE A PUSSY"!!!!

Let's play some poker....

(Actually still not playing atm due to work load)

Holy crap man. I knew you said this somewhere!!! Defend range is set against the BETSIZE not the frequency! You said it yourself! THEN we can adjust it to exploit if we have reads. WP!

Hi amigos.

Just realised that the poker month and the poker week is over!

I did not play for quite a while now due to working on a property that became vacant.

So I did not lose this week which makes a nice change!

I did lose over the month of May though.

I haven't got figures with me here but think I lost $40 at the tables and got $20 RB in May (will put graphs when back in the poker chair). Add that to April where I only won around $10 at the tables and $20 RB and it's all a bag of **** really!

----

Not playing lately has given me extra time to think about things...

I said if things did not get good by April next year I will quit. I seriously hate quitting and especially quitting something I enjoy so much.

I am in a CFP deal that has gone backwards.

I play more 5nlz now than 10nlz even though I am seriously over rolled for 10nlz (probably for 25nlz tbh too) and I never even played as low as 5nlz before.

I/we are considering ending the deal. To be honest I cannot see much point in continuing. My confidence and belief is low and that sort of attitude makes it unfair on all parties.

To be fair to coach he is offering me tonnes of extra coaching but after 7 months together nothing has improved enough imo. Sometimes one just has to accept that it ain't gonna happen.

Anyway, I have a few days to consider my options on that so will think it all through.

---

I'll leave it at that. Tbh I am just rambling some thoughts!

See you next week amigos! Keep working on yourself!!!

P.S. Everything else is perfect!
