Good luck with your quest Bart.

If you are interested in sharing your excel file I'd love to get a copy. It could be fun to try to do same :P You can catch me on Skype in case.

Sure no problem. Gotta cut the lawn first, but will be in touch shortly.

p.s. The software will tilt you, boy is it frustrating :rolleyes:

Bart

Really, I've been playing over there the last while with my rake race, I went back and played on Mansion today and it was insta tilt. For all of Cereus flaws there are somethings I really like there, the software being one of them.

@Jonaton, Hiya, thanks for droppping by. Yeah personal preference really, appreciate that software will suit or be favoured by some players. Personally I prefer Full Tilt and PokerStars having gone right off of ipoker too, but like i say each to their own.

Once again a poor start to the day, donkeys completely doing my head in, so much so that i took myself off for a break before returning.

The further you go up the ladder the more you seem to have to wait for a game to start, Step 4 was just rediculously long wait but I guess I'm not going anywhere. Also wanted to push my step 2's & 3's up, but no takers at the moment. :O

Updated Results

Current positions

40 games played in total with 60% promotion rate (1st & 2nd):
1st = 10 (25%)
2nd = 14 (35%)
3rd = 4 (10%)
4th = 2 (5%)
5th = 3 (7.5%)
6th = 4 (10%)
7th = 1 (2.5%)
8th = 1 (2.5%)
9th = 1 (2.5%)

What do people think of these? are these ok? Don't think I'm doing too bad so far.

Oh, I found reference to steps on the internet. Apparantly they recommend getting 10x on each step before pushing on, theory is then you don't play as scared money. I can see the point, but personally will probably stick to 4 or 5 per level. I'm pushing more step 1's in each day which keeps things ticking over nicely.

Posting this now as unlikely to do anymore today. Got an interview for the community news to do shortly and a concert tonight, so will refocus and push on again tomorrow.

Best regards,

Bart

Ok, so didn't make it to the concert :( so will do a couple more tonight and see how we go.

I've been doing some calculations based on my current winrate (i.e. promotions by finishing 1st or 2nd) of 60%, assuming I use the full 265 entries available within this old a/c balance:

Step 1 > x265
Step 2 > reached approx x159 (60% of 265)
Step 3 > x95 (60% of 159 etc)
Step 4 > x57
Step 5 > x34
STep 6 > x20
Step 7 > x12
Step 8 > x7
Step 9 > x4 or x5
Step 10 > x2 or x3

This calc doesn't include the additional 15% of games which I am currently achieving a retry/not losing, so a little margin for error. Also on a couple of levels whilst losing, you get a nominal cash return too, so this may bolster the x265 available to me anyway.

Would settle for 2 or 3 attempts at Step 10 ofc, but would have to maintain 60% winrate all the way up the ladder and over longer period of time/game, so thinking perhaps unlikely.
The assumption I have is that the skill level which increase around Step 5 or 6, but heck only one way to find out lol.

Bart

Oh only just saw this Bart.

Sounds like a very interesting project and by the looks of things it could work out.

I wish you good luck and lets hope you turn those $29 into a $12000 (or whatever) WSOP package!!

You're doing well, I wish you good luck.
You play at ultimatebet?

Thx both, appreciate your support.

Yeah UB, an old account I had pre-PokerStrategy and hardly ever used, never did care for it tbh and ofc hit by scandal etc. although I appreciate (as Jonaton mentioned) that some players like it.

Rather than attempt to withdraw the small amount of BR left there, I thought I'd do this as a challenge. Once the BR is gone, will close the account down and concentrate on my favoured Full Tilt, Pokerstars & Party accounts.

Thx for dropping by, keep revisiting, I'm gonna need all the support to even get close to achieving this

Many thanks,

Bart

ya well, whatever the results are, just try to keep your head up even when busting as bubble boy in the 10th step ;)

as all poker games should basically be, this is supposed to be fun, right ?

gl in the future attempts and looking forward for those interview results ;)

Oh yeah totally, couldn't agree more Michael, having great fun with this but of course trying to be as competitive as possible at the same time. Don't expect to win and will be totally fine with whatever occurs, even if miss the prizes by 1 place.

I'll let you into a secret, I suffer from poor health which is also the reason why I missed the concert tonight, I couldn't travel the 10 miles or so, its a bummer but lifes too short. At times I'm pretty much housebound and the chances of me actually flying to Vegas if i did win the seat are remote to say the least.
So why bother I hear you all ask? Because of the challenge, because of the fun, like Michael says, keep your poker real folks, it's not always about money and in fact never has been to me.
A lot of people are doing prop bets on winning from step 1 like I'm attempting, thats fine, no problem, gl to them. But I'd settle for someone buying me a doughnut (has to be jam or apple btw), patting me on the shoulder and saying well done lad. It's the kind of guy I am. Each to their own and all that.

Played 3x more tonight. 2xStep 1's & a Step 2. Results..... 4th, 3rd, 3rd, i.e. retry, retry, retry. Nothing gained but importantly nothing lost and had fun, especially with the push/fold and a little luck along the way.

Each game played helps the experience and how to handle these types of sng differently to normal or don ones :)

Well. I tried that ass well. But the problem is that I can not set some tracking sw on UB to work. I tried free version of holdem manager but seems not to import tournament histories (and specially steps).
Are you using some tracking software here? Thanks. And do you play turbos or regular tounaments. I found it frustrating to play 0.1+.001 tournament for 2 hours and then finishing 3rd or worse=) Well I am not such SNG champion and tried configure tracking which does not work anyway.
But now even I have ticket step2. So see you in main event=)) I tried to pm you on comunity but does not work.

Hiya Alafoe,

I don't use any software whatsoever, no HU, just relying on my own reads of people and judgement calls.
Also not using any tracking, other than manually recording my results in an Excel spreadsheet and cross checking my calcs/positions against the poker site cashier, which also shows what seat tickets currently held.

As shown in my results, only currently playing regular (10min blinds) tournaments. I want to try to beat people using poker skills rather than get lucky the push/shove way. But never say never, might try a few sometime.

With all due respect Alafoe, if you found it frustrating sitting for 2 hours on 1x tourney, these might not be for you. I'm currently up to 61 games, taking a total of god knows how many hours and 'only' up to Step 5 so far (albeit backing loads up on each level).
This is a tough challenge and is going to need a heck of a lot of grinding, knock-backs and retrys.
I hope you stick at it and give it a shot, but ensure your mentally prepared first my friend ;)
Good luck with them, let us know how you get on. Whats your poker name on that site?, no point knocking each other out, will try to avoid you :)

pm on community should work, if not you can skype me (englandbart) of course, only make sure you mention in intro your pokerstrategy name otherwise I will automatically block you (seem to get so many spammers on skype sigh).

Sorry everyone for not posting results yesterday, I fell asleep mid-afternoon due to a couple of (non poker related) stressful days and didn't wake up until early hours. I'll update yesterdays & todays results so far shortly.

I was thinking (probably think far too much), about the win rate which has dropped slightly and actually this isnt a major issue because majority i didn't win were retrys. I guess it doesn't matter how many times I go around as long as it eventually results in promotion up the ladder.
On that basis, here are my daily Win Rate/Retry Rate/Lose Rates to help me track progress and tighten up results:

............Win.... Retry.....Lose
18/04: 37.5% 50.0% 12.5%
19/04: 71.4% 0.0% 28.6%
20/04: 68.8% 6.3% 25.0%
21/04: 41.7% 33.3% 25.0%
22/04: 45.5% 36.4% 18.2%

Update follows shortly.

Hey bart goodluck with this challenge already a step 5 ticket nice!

I got a question though do you know what happens to the step sytsem after the wsop? There might be more profitable ways to play the ladder if you know this.

Dont forget the higher you climb up the ladder the harder it'll become, if you get step 8+ tickets I would definatly think about the time of day you play and doing some sort of table selection via sharkscope etc.

The amount of players are also likely to increase in the higher steps when the wsop hype nears esp the fishes so maybe keep them saved for later?

Anyways goodluck!

James

Hi James, wise words as always mate.

Yep, hadn't really thought about time of day tbh, just tried to fit a couple in now and again, but agree would be vital the higher i go up.

According to the T&C's, you can't cash out any of the steps, you have to play them, so was a little concerned about the end date for these (as not published anywhere). I'm guessing that they will be around until at least mid June though so should have plenty of time to grind. Will prob run out of entries (from my $29) before then anyway as used approx 10% already.

So far taking into account the value of the seats I'm currently holding, it's showing a 10xfold increase on investment, so yeah there may well be a case for trying these on a non-wsop basis. I'm aware that party poker has some that give a cash amount out on their final step and pokerstars too i think. probably others if i search hard enough for them.

I will post the latest results soon, just sorting a few things out for the community news, but happy to report that I secured a 2nd Step 5 seat ealier today

After successfully getting a 2nd entry into Step 5, promptly lost to an extremely tight table.

Have spent the last couple of days multi-tabling step 1's & 2's and getting nowhere, just treading water at best, losing far too many at worse.

Ok so I've had some poor luck/suk outs etc, but Variance not totally to blame, poor play behind most of them and my reading skills definately affected by multitabling. Single or 2x tables are definately the way forward.

Oh and quite conveniently, had the blue screen of death at a critical point today too. Not great, taking a break and will regroup later on.

Oh and the "currently holding seats worth" figure is wrong btw, forgot to update, it's currently $23.78.

Have a great evening,

Bart

Just incase anyone was wondering how I was doing yesterday, I actually gave myself a day off the steps.

I just entered a $1 tourney on Stars along with my good friends gaz & kay and we all did pretty good. Kay & myself both cashed and Gaz had actually final tabled the same tourney the day before and is running hot :P

I finished 39th/2439 for $4.40, all down to expert railing from Gaz, Kay, Sarah & Stiev. Thanks guys, had a lot of fun & appreciate your support.
Sorry for the donk at the end, mixture of tiredness, confusion over pot/stack ratio and frustration at slipping well below the avg chip stack for the first time in the tourney. Still much to learn.

Steps return tomorrow.... err later today that is now. Night everyone.

So following my day off, I come back strongly, winning promotion in 6x events, retrys in a further 6x and just 1x lost (from step 2).

Was trying to clear the bottleneck building up at Step 3, but just couldn't get anything other than 3rd or 4th which are both retrys at Step 3. So nothing gained, but more importantly nothing lost. Will have another stab at this today and keep shoreing up the lower positions. Want to try to get 3 or 4 at Step 5 before pushing upwards again, thats the theory anyway.

Current Positions

Win Rate etc

Bart

The challenge is over folks, why? Because UB sucks..... major league.

To clarify:

This is a great challenge, a superb one even. It's extremely difficult, especially considering the donkeys that play in these steps, but it is very rewarding, I had great fun doing it and made great progress. I know that a lot of you on skype also enjoyed following it too. To you all I apologise and send my regards.

After the 8th complete pc breakdown/reboot caused directly by this sht piece of poker software however and numerous other freezes, blank tables and inability to click on the table buttons, I've given up. It's just not worth the hassle.

And another thing, you click on "Fold", it recognises and it correctly selects/highlights it, great you think, job done, but no wait a minute, if someone should happen to fold their own hand before it gets to your turn (I mean imao, as if they would), it decides to ask you again Fold/check/raise, i mean wtf! How frustrating do you think that is when trying to multi-table.

So I'm quitting with 2x entries up at step 5, numerous others at steps 4 & 3 etc.

I'm not giving UB another cent or another second of my time, it stinks, they can keep whatever remains of the $29 (around $25 i think), I hope they choke on it.

And a final footnote, this is a great format for poker and one I will seriously do again someday, but only on a decent platform, maybe Stars or Full Tilt.

Once again I apologise to anyone following the challenge, but trust you will understand the reasoning behind this decision.

Best regards,

Bart

p.s This is not tilt, I have made a perfectly rational decision based on the experiences encountered. I've quit whilst holding entries worth over $40 from an investment of just over $4, a great ROI! Look out for my next challenge on a decent poker platform real soon. :)

:'(

Sorry to hear that UB is that bad. I wish you luck with whatever you go on and do now :P

You can always ship the money to me if you want. I'll find a way to donk them off ;)

Anyway, sad that you won't go further with the challenge, but given your story I can't blame you one second.
