Easy Game Volume II - Part V
Chapter XXVIII/ Creativity, Bet Sizing and pseudo-Thin Value
Overbet:
- Bluff: If he can't have any kind of strong hand
- Value: He likes to make big calls
- Create image: overbet bluff when he will fold
Underbetting:
Against a bad aggressive player, when draw misses and he checks the river, he is unlikely to call any big bet. Good spot to minbet and call a raise. He will be polarized with a great deal of bluffs.
Pseudo-Thin Value:
Example:
6:s6:h on 7:s5:s2:h we bet vilain calls, 2:d he checks we check, 3:h he checks (doesn't have anything at all) we bet very small to either get call by A5, A high or raised by 89.
Chapter XXIX/ Advanced Handreading
Vs passif very easy: raise = strong hand.
Vs bad aggr very easy: forgot everything, call with anything decent.
Vs good aggr tricky
Good player understand when to bet 1/value from worse 2/make better hand fold.
Range = composite range of Value Range and Bluff Range.
To evaluate composite range first evaluate both distinct ranges.
Example:
Vilain = Great magnac (Samoleus)
Hero = TAG regular
[P] Hero UTG raise AQo, Vilain calls BB. Flop:
[F] A:hQ:c9:s: Vilain checks, Hero bets, vilain calls
[T] 8:h: Vilain checks, Hero bets, vilain raises
Vilain Flop range: OOP will not call flop with no pairs or draws. {QT+, Ax, A9, 99} + {KT, KJ, JT}
Vilain bluff range: {Ax, KQ, QT, QJ, KJ, KT }
- Won't turn A9 into a bluff (can't get call by worst).
- Made hands to bluff hands: Ax, KQ, QT, QJ
- Draw range into bluff hands: KJ, KT
Vilain bluff frequency: near 10%
- BFq- (Bluff Frequency) strong coordinated board
- BFq- Hero's strong line
- BFq- Draw hit the turn
(Not in the book: evaluating bluff range in this situation: K:hJ:h, K:hT:h, J;hQ:h, Q:hJ:h, Q:hT:h #5 only semi bluffs)
Vilain value range: {AQ, 99 JT} #23
Vilain value frequency: near 100%
Even with Top DP vs Good Magac, it's a fold.
Chapter XXIX/ Advanced Showdown Theory
In a lot of situations, many players know their opponent have a weak hand and they also have a weak hand, probably worst than their opponent. They don't play aggr in the hope that their weak hand will be good enough at showdown.
Card strength is relative, it doesn't matter what you have if it's weaker than your opponent.
Example:
Vilain Regular
Vilain raise utg, Hero call Co 5:c6:c
[F] Q32r, vilain bets, hero calls (to take the pot turn/float)
[T] 6, vilain checks, hero bets, vilain calls (Not in the book: weak Q,TT-88)
[R] 7, vilain checks, hero?
The 6 are never good here! The only reason to check is thinking a bluff will not work.
Here we can bet to represent sets, straights, good Q, probably good spot to overbet.
Turning a made hand into a bluff is a good idea when your opponent is likely to have a weak hand but one that's still better than yours. Playing passively to get to showdown is an unsuccessful strategy.
Example of what not to do:
Vilain Regular
Vilain raise UTG, Hero call Btn A5s
[F] 973s, Vilain x/c
[T] K, Hero xb
[R] 5, Vilain bPot
NEVER CALL. If we think a bluff would work successfully, raise, if not fold.
