Martin Staszko: Czech in Command

35-year-old Martin Staszko may not come across as the most flamboyant pro, but his steely determination has put him in pole position for this year's title. He scooped a pot worth nearly 4 million at the expense of Lars Bonding on Day 7 to virtually guarantee his final table spot.

A couple of EPT events aside, this year's WSOP represents Staszko's first real foray into tournament poker. He has performed with aplomb, notching four cashes - the highest being for $10,156 - prior to his Main Event run.

Staszko admits that this year's WSOP has been a steep learning curve, "I mostly play online more than live. I played in four EPT events, some smaller tournaments. That's all the experience I have with live play. I've been in Vegas from June 2; I played 15 tournaments. That's more than I'd played in my entire life, so I got some big experience here".

Staszko won Event Five of the PokerStars SCOOP earlier this year to the tune of $91,539, under his online moniker "filfedra". He only turned pro at the start of 2010 after working in an auto-plant for several years. Staszko hopes that his Main Event adventure will inspire a generation of players in his homeland.

Staszko attributes his methodical style and analytical skills to his interest in chess. Staszko is ranked as an "expert" by the World Chess Federation's points system, one rank below master. Clearly riding on the crest of a wave at this year's WSOP, you wouldn't bet against Staszko Czechmating his opponents and claiming victory.
