Are the Brits Taking Over? Matt Perrins Claims WSOP Victory in Memorable Fashion

In the past three days, Matt Perrins and Jake Cody, both from Rochdale, England won WSOP bracelets. Even more impressive is that Perrins claimed the title after never playing 2-7 draw lowball before.

Either Rochdale knows how to raise talented poker players or it's just a fluke that two of the eight WSOP bracelet winners travelled halfway across the world and claimed their victory at the WSOP.

Last Friday Jake Cody won the $25,000 No Limit Hold'em Championship, and only three days later Matt Perrins won the $1,500 2-7 Draw Lowball event.

Where in the world is Rochdale? Yeah, we said that same thing too. With a population of less than 100,000 inhabitants, Rochdale is just a tiny dot on the map northeast of Manchester.

There's a first time for everything

Perhaps what makes Matt Perrins' win so impressive is that he had never played a single hand of 2-7 Draw Lowball until he took his seat at the tournament. That's right - it was his first time.

Perrins went over the basic strategy of the game by watching 30 minutes of YouTube videos. Two days later, he was the proud owner of his first WSOP bracelet and $102,105 richer.

He later explained that he wanted to try something "different." His idea of different was throwing down $1,500, playing a game he never played and facing hardcore lowball specialists.

Perrins met Jason Mercier at the final table, but continued dominating until he was the last man standing out of a talented field of 275 participants.
