Dan Smith wins the $200,000 Triton Invitational
Another seven-figure score for Dan Smith in the invite-only nosebleed tournament in Monaco.
The first big event of the Triton Series in Monaco has concluded with Dan Smith in the winner's circle yet again, taking down the $200,000 Invitational for $3,870,000.
He defeated former footballer turned professional poker player Mario Mosböck heads-up for the third biggest score of his career.
The $200,000 Invitational attracted a field of 73 players in the unique format event. A reminder that the only way a professional can play in the tournament is to get an invite from a VIP (spare a thought for Justin Bonomo who didn't get an invite). Then the VIPs play against each other and the Pros do the same until Day 2 where the fields combine.
“This is very special,” Smith said after the tournament. “I’ve had a few bigger scores in my career…but it’s different when you win a tournament with 70 players like this. It’s one of the biggest events of the year and only so many guys get to win them.”
It was also a big night for French amateur player Jean Noel Thorel who came 4th for $1,390,000. In doing so he overtook Bertrand 'ElkY' Grospellier in the France All-Time Money List with $15,257,987 in live earnings.
